I want basic quality of life improvements like extra macro lines to be possible without hearing the god-awful excuse of "PS2 Limitations". I don't want a graphical overhaul, I just want th engine's back-end overhauled with scalability and long-term development in mind. Is it really so bad to want the game to live on and continue improving itself?

Re: Official FINAL FANTASY XI Forums Launch! (03/08/2011)

You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to see they were working on the XI-HD update and halfway through the process decided to go with the "vision", renamed as XIV.

Which ended up pretty much killing both games.

But it's all in the past now, as I don't see how* they would be able to salvage XIV now without turning it into an XI clone that will never be anywhere near as good as the original nor how they could update XI after having spent all their resources on XIV and letting go a huge chunk of XI's playerbase in the process hoping they would move on to XIV.

      * 'Cause the way I see it it would require for them to merge (yes merge) both games, which is so improbable I'll probably be playing Duke Nukem Forever VS Black Mesa before that happens.

Not at all. I mean, again, I suppose that could be an optional update, but 1.) Unfair? 2.) Already exists in 3rd party form, 3.) Worthwhile expenditure of resources?

I get that some people don't want to use 3rd party tools, but I mean, seriously. Most people who are on the PC threw in the towel on that one years ago. I'm not saying use a Flee Hack. I'm saying, if you want more macro lines, there are options.

There's no difference between a flee hack and a more macro lines hack. Both give you an unfair advantage over people playing on consoles, or people who just don't want to cheat.

Anyway, regarding the PS2, SE will probably consider dropping it when they don't have a substantial percentage of the userbase still using it. They can check that statistic any time, so they know how many users they will risk losing if they drop PS2 compatibility/support. Right now there's too many PS2 users, but that probably will decline eventually.

But I don't think there's a lot of upside -- there's people who say they quit because of the interface or whatever, but how many of them would really come back instead of looking for another game? Amazingly there's still some completely new players joining the game, but I doubt that would increase substantially with whatever technical changes you could make after dropping the PS2.

                Sure, ok.

Except that extra macro lines aren't really that big a deal, as anyone with half a brain has been able to manage just fine for years, and it's not as though the reason certain players get the claim more often or really stand head and shoulders above anyone else is because they have a few extra macro lines. Like I said, it's an option. The bias against add ons in this game has always amazed me.

I think a dramatic change in something like graphics would bring a fair number of folks back, at least temporarily. Much as the current changes have to a certain extent (though not enough, and honestly, it seems in some ways to be alienating older players who feel the game is being dumbed down even further for current players). But there is little to nothing that can be done at this point in a game's lifespan to bring back people for the long-term.

Some of us would like to be able to change several pieces of gear in just 1 macro instead of 2-3 tyvm.

Dude, I totally understand that. That's why I said, it's an option. Karinya was all "NO IT IS THE SAME AS FLEEHACKING." Which: no.

Well Murphie's point is that's not enough of a reason to ditch the PS2.

There are other reasons for it, though. If it's nearing its limit in terms of pure disk space and basically cockblocking any chance for a full-on expansion then it's worth considering. If SE wants to release a brand-new expansion with brand new areas (not reskinned original areas) but the PS2 literally can not support it in any way, it would be a huge detriment to continue supporting the system. And from the way things sound, it's beginning to be the case.

If SE plans to quit churning out expansions and just let the game die out with regular minor patches (after the level cap increases are done, of course) then there's no need to remove PS2 support. It all depends where they're trying to take the game. They released WoTG like what, three years ago? They're kind of overdue for another full expansion if you ask me, but they haven't said anything hinting that such a thing might be in the works. So who knows if they actually plan to expand the game further or just let people have fun with what's already available.

Yeah, old game is old, but if people want to continue to pay for it and play it and they still want regular new content, why should SE keep trying to cling to the PS2 if it will be unable to support such an endeavor?

I can see both sides of the argument. I'll admit, though, seeing "PS2 limitations" as SE's stock answer for every goddamn question under the sun is tired and seriously just fucking irritating. And part of my hatred for the PS2 version of FFXI is the damn fact that the devs used it as a crutch to not improve on a lot of things. Admitting to bias on my part though doesn't mean that I don't think it may be in their best interest and the best interest of the game as a whole to drop their support of the machine.

So I've been using Chrome's translation feature and it sounds like even the JPs are having some PS2 Limitations debates. Granted their dialog seems to focus more on shifting to PS3 than to PC, but it's still a step in the right direction.

yeah I think that would be a good idea as well, upgrade FFXI to PS3 and then update both PC and PS3 versions with a new expansion.

Not at all. If it's a game you love (and let's be honest, none of us would be here if FFXI wasn't at least at some point a game we loved), then of course you'd want that.
