  • FFXIV ARR PS3 display 480p vs. 720p troubleshooting discussion

Okay mew, someone gave me a PS3 code to download it, but they don't have a registration code. Anyways, I can get to the title screen, but I notice my HDTV doesn't seem to support 720p (I'm using compontent cable, seems the refresh rate is incompatible. "out of range"). So the display is like a huge black border around the screen and the screen itself is like small (I tried 4:3 and 16:9 options, 4:3 is an improvement, but I'm thinking that's as big as it will get for gameplay, etc. So might have to buy a new TV.) Other than that, I'm not sure why it would display it so small since this supports 480p too. While waiting for a registration code from email, maybe I can solve this display issue in the meantime if someone already solved it themselves and currently playing on PS3. (but I assume everyone else has an actual standard HDTV, this HDTV doesn't have HDMI, so it's not quite an HDTV despite being widescreen. ) If they don't address this, this version might be unplayable at 480p.

And that's a bad thing because.... seriously, go get a new TV. You've been waiting to play this for 3 years, and you don't have the proper TV? REALLY? You could probably buy one someone is trying to get rid of for $50.

This should display 480p fullscreen. This is not some CRT TV or some square TV. This is a widescreen TV and all the big budget 480p and 720p games I played on PS3 display things fullscreen, so should FFXIV ARR. Yes I can buy a new TV, but why should I when SE could make 480p work properly so it display fullscreen as it should on a 16:9 widescreen TV like this. And FFXIV ARR officially supports 480p so there is no excuse for displaying the screen boxed in as if it were someone trying to play a PSP on a TV. It could save people 100s of dollars and I don't need to pull up statistics to show there are lots of people without HDMI/top of the line TVs in the world, and this kind of display will affect their subscriptions potential. Even if I were to buy a new TV, there are lots of others that would skip this if this is how 480p is going to be presented. The way 480p is being presented is not professional in its current state. They should have tested it on more TVs besides their high class TVs.

Nobody in the right mind would want to play in 480p. The amount of space the chat log took up in FFXI at that resolution was insane.

I think they probably assumed anyone who shelled out hundreds of dollars for an HD console would have the will and the means to spend a fraction of that on a proper television to hook it up to. I would have.

That said, if other PS3 games work fine but for some reason X|V doesn't, then I would suggest writing a bug report as soon as you get official access. That seems like it would be a certification issue.

Not everyone is going to buy a new TV when their current TV looks and works fine with everything else. FFXI looked perfectly displayed at 4:3, I played XI throughout the expansions with no complaints of the chat log/UI size, and it always displayed fullscreen whether I played it on PS2 and later on X360. Once I get email with registration code, I will notify SE about this, though I'm sure a lot of PS3 people with 480p TVs must have mentioned it by now. When something officially supports 480p, it should be fullscreen. I experimented with some of the browser display settings, sine Javascript On does affect the display in the beta (it's blackscreen if it's off). but even with the PS3 browser set to full pixel and stuff, it seems to have little to no effect on the default display. From a 480p standpoint, that is unacceptable.

You're right; they could use any computer monitor made in the last 8 years too.

Obviously you wouldn't know how bad you had it if you never tried playing it at a sane resolution.

This TV is only a few years old. They say this supports 480p, so it shouldn't be treated like some picture in picture display like people reeeeally want their display smaller than the size of their TV screen. Well some people said that that display only appears during the title screen menus, but during gameplay it's fullscreen, supposedly. It's strange because the "version code" screen stuff that appears beforehand is displayed fullscreen, crisp and clear, and then the FFXIV ARR title screen is displayed like a TV inside your TV surrounded by a mass of black borders. I would say this TV is pretty standard for 480p, there's no reason the display would be smaller than the screen size. If I have to buy a new TV, I will have to switch the CE preorder to standard. Buying a keyboard or controller is one thing, but buying a TV because this in particular doesn't display 480p how it should, is game breaking to most people. They might as well only support 720p, but then, what would that do to its subscription sales?

For what it's worth, the PC version does not support resolutions less than 720p.

I'm still stunned that someone would sink all that money into an HD console but not a television that can display HD resolutions. That's like buying an awesome stereo and running it through crap speakers. Sure technically it's functional, but you're not really getting what you paid for.

If you've got an old TV still limping along there's a decent chance it's a CRT. Have you tried moving one of those things? I don't blame people for putting off buying a new television because it would mean figuring out how to move the old one.

That's what I don't get about a lot of people (especially on the official forums) You have people whining about not being able to run the game and they're still using graphic cards (mid entry) from 10 years ago.

The stereo/speakers analogy doesn't fit the case. You don't know how great and "acceptable" this widescreen/flatscreen TV looks for just about anything. but people spoiled by the top of the top resolutions and latest monitors/TVs and HDMI cables are too sensitive to be comfortable with anything remotely less than that. "all that money" really isn't alot considering PS3 is only about $200 these days, most people didn't move to PS3 until it dropped below $300 (and have owned one for years now). Investing in a new TV when you current TV displays ALL games developed for it just fine at 480p, is a waste of good TV. This isn't like the CRT I had a month or two ago. I moved up to component cables at least. The only issue with this TV is the refresh is not compatible with PS3 signal to support 720p. but again, FFXIV ARR supports 480p, it shouldn't look like a post office slot onscreen.

PS3 is $249.00 most places... about the same that it would cost for a low end 40" HDTV. I honestly can't understand how someone who loves games would deprive themselves of the enjoyment of playing games the way they were designed to be played. By the way, you say you upgraded from CRT two months ago? If so, why wouldn't you upgrade to something more modern?

I got this TV for free. and where in the world would you find a local store that sells a 40" HDMI TV for less than $300? I don't shop online. Edit: oh recently someone who played it on PS3 said
As soon as the game launches, it looks like any other PS3 game.
So I guess that was just a title screen display issue. I got past those parts so it should look fine after starting.
