Re: FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Official Benchmark - Exploration Now Available!
I just tried out the benchmark on my laptop. It plays (like shit). If I'm going to XIV at all (which slowly looks like it's going to happen), it looks like it will have to be on PS3 then.

Re: FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Official Benchmark - Exploration Now Available!
"Brand" is just a label.
My sister's old Fremont built Toyota Corolla squeaked and rattled, but my older Japan built Toyota Corolla didn't.
Brand matters? Well, if one has better information, decide with that. In absence of real data, I guess it will have to do--or, one can always hold off on the purchase and do some real research; a PC shouldn't be an impulse buy.

I can see how it would be important to select only the best, since hardware costs would prevent you from constantly replacing bad products. But there are plenty of brands that provide quality products.

Basically, yeah. I've done a lot of comparison window shopping and found overwhelmingly that the ones I recommended earlier are generally (but not always) the best.

There's no denying that certain brands have an earned reputation for making specific products well. I think that is the point that Mal is trying to make.

Brands only matter when it comes to evaluating customer service. Everything else should be evaluated on the basis of "does this specific product suck or not?".

Sorry, it's probably worded poorly - what I mean is, what Cid said about the quality of the product mattering most is true. I just don't agree with the notion that brands don't matter.

Oh? But, this part was a bit confusing:Originally posted by Malacite View PostThat's not what I said. I said certain brands carry a good rep and justifiably so.
If a product is no good, then the company's reputation for making good product would be undeserved. Yes? (No?!?)Originally posted by Malacite View PostThe underlying principal is accurate - whether the product is good or not - but you can't deny that some brands really are just consistently better.

Doesn't mean you HAVE to buy from them, but they're highly recommended for good reason.

Re: FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Official Benchmark - Exploration Now Available!
It doesn't matter now, because every electronic component is manufactured in China, and if one was to follow the money trail, it will most likely end up at one of a very few handful of megaconglomerates. In other words, you pick the product that has been thoroughly reviewed and scored on merits and not showered with shills.

Re: FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Official Benchmark - Exploration Now Available!
That's BS and you know it.
Certain brands are rated top in their category for good reason - like Samsung. Intel's got a good rep for SSDs too, but like everything else they make it's grossly over-priced while Samsung's Pro series are cheaper, offer more storage and perform better across the board. Same goes with anything else.

Re: FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn Official Benchmark - Exploration Now Available!
The only brand that's worth caring about is Logitech, and as TM has pointed out in the past not even that's not a sure thing.Originally posted by Malacite View PostGonna have to disagree - brands matter, big time.
The only thing you really ought to concern yourself with is whether the product is shitty or good, not which sticker is on the side of it.

1920x1080 Full Screen, Lowest Setting Possible - 9021 - Still looked damn good, 75 FPS
1920x1080 Full Screen, Medium Setting - 8392
1920x1080 Full Screen, High Setting - 5807
1920x1080 Full Screen, Maximum Setting - 4673 - Noticeable dip in fps, but not debilitating, 37 FPS
I built this rig 2.5 years ago for the release of FFXIV 1.0.
System:

Gonna have to disagree - brands matter, big time.
SSDs - Samsung
nVidia - EVGA
Radeon - Sapphire
RAM - Corsair (Vengeance specifically but Corsair in general is amazing) or Kingston
