  • Armor and Scaling

Does anybody know much about how higher leveled armor scales when equipped to lower level players? I think this is important to consider right now, because a lot of people are paying ridiculous prices for high level equipment at low levels, unsure of whether or not the effects are scaling properly or outright removed until the optimal level is met.

It's very similar to level synch. You're basically much better off with gear near or even below your own class rank (not physical level! Optimal rank refers to class!) until you're within say 2~5 levels of said item, depending on stat difference.

I still prefer to wear Bronze plate greaves over the tights that I've been forced to parade around with, even though the Bronze ones are 10 ranks higher.

Also, I was reading the forums in Programming class today, and some people noticed your sig, and though I was looking at porn.

      Thanks.

Aeni did some testing was able to retrieve the full effect of his armor when his class rank was lower than his physical level, and the physical level was at the optimal whatever.

But yea, level sync ruined equipment in FFXI. People thought it was great, but it would completely remove most stat additions, rather than moderate them. It was cool on the outside, but an all-around bad idea upon closer examination. I don't want to walk around with no stat bonuses because I'm an idiot and wanted the shiny gear.

Level Synch wasn't that bad, it wasn't a straight up scaling of armor as people assumed but a scaling of gear based on the average gear available at that level. Wearing a Hauby at 30 would give you pretty much nothing, because nothing really gave you anything to begin with. But wearing dusk gloves would give you the full Att boost since other gear gave you comparable Att at that level. Of course there were also things like wearing a Hauberk at Haubergeon levels where it wouldn't give you nearly as much of a boost, but they seemed to be more or less rarer then not getting anything at all.

As for the actual "Level vs Rank" part, the gear clearly states "Optimal Rank" which is in regards to one's Skill rank as opposed to Physical Level. But if it is level based then it's either a bug or a mis-type. My guess is it's a bug since Physical Level seems to mean so little in this game outside of base stats. I'll be able to test this myself easy enough the next time I log on though.

Unless it's a bug, this is largely incorrect. It's been working off physical level for me and I've actually seen level 20 Marauders equipped with a bronze haubergeon (Optimal Rank 27) when their physical must've met that consideration.
