Re: FFXIV Character creation details revealed!
I'm leaning toward something like this currently. Once you earn so many points you get a new WS or skill probably. They might have it so you gain skill ups, like you do now with the crafts, in the skills instead of just plain old exp/levels.

Did they say there was no Levels are just no XP? It may sound like a dumb question.. but everyone keeps saying there won't be levels when all they said was there won't be XP.Originally posted by Omgwtfbbqkitten View Postirst off, I think we have to accept in a game where there are no experience points or levels (or levels just don't matter), that Ability/Job Points tend to rise to take their place.
How else can you level without XP? I don't know lol. Maybe they figured out some sort of system. Or.. they don't want you to call it XP anymore just like they don't want you to call classes, jobs.. I am just very confused about all this lol. Cause I can't think of a way you can advance in strength without gaining some type of XP. Whether it's ability points or something else.
I never played tactics though.. so if they're using that system just ignore this.

Re: FFXIV Character creation details revealed!
in FFII all you needed was mastered fists, 3 characters with that destroy everything in FFII in 1-2 rounds, even most bosses (the strongest get vanquished in a few more rounds)
Well at least that's how it works in FF Origins version of it. The encounter rate was so epic.
it's possible for a similiar growth system in FFXIV, but they can just make the skilling up rate faster. FFXIV may borrow some concepts, but will definitely be a new formula in different ways.

FFII was fun :D tedius skill training tho.
Hopefully the skill training will not be like Saga where the gains are random.

You never will either, since it's not a game mechanic.Originally posted by Armando View PostWhat? Is this some crazy endgame thing? I'm a bit over 30 hours into CC and haven't run into Elements that spoil yet.
In-universe or lore-wise, elements are physical objects. In one scene Leena teases Lisa (who is working as a clerk in her father's element shop,) saying that the elements on display look spoiled. It was a joke by Leena, but who knows what the hell an element actually is or if it'd have an expiration date. Tablets, capsules, and nostroms should have expiration dates obviously, medicines generally do.
They are the same thing to me. Both bad, but the sphere grid was much more obtuse, grindy, and had those obnoxious locks.Originally posted by Malacite View PostLicense Board was garbage, never speak of it again. The Sphere Grid wasn't too bad.

Kind of, except the kid can build his own damn sword. He's not getting mine.Originally posted by Takelli View PostSo... kinda like how a Samurai's sword is his life, and would pas it down to their child? It should be the same for the armor as well. You should be able to upgrade the item and make it "better", while obtaining other weapons, that will be useful in other situations, but doesn't take the place of your main weapon.
But the idea of treating it with respect would be similar, like a musician takes care of an instrument or a carpenter his tools.

Re: FFXIV Character creation details revealed!
First off, I think we have to accept in a game where there are no experience points or levels (or levels just don't matter), that Ability/Job Points tend to rise to take their place.
We've seen them used as a kind of currency in FFX and FFT for obtaing skills or stats. We've seen them used to unlock skills through weapons in FFIX and the FFTA games which is more akin to the Esper System in FFVI. In FFVII, they were used to strengthen materia and unlock new skills, but those skills were a commodity and entirely transferable - no one really learned anything (which begs the question of why they can do just fine without in in Advent Children, but I digress).
I don't like the idea of skills being a thing you can trade away and sell, in the online realm that's just begging to be exploited to its fullest and I think skills and abilities shouldn't be that way.
FFIX's concept of learning skills from a weapon is not such a bad idea so long as there are alternative weapons to get that skill from or materials are accessible. FFXIV seems to be boasting a strong emphasis on weapon maintenance and Monster Hunter-style weapon upgrading. In fact, I am hoping that is what they're going for because that would help reduce weapon creation costs and allow people to maintain their weapons, along with keeping learned abilities accessible.
Without a summoner in the picture so far, though, there is a potential for us to gain skills from summons. Time will tell there, they could be employed in many ways. Gaining a summons favor, for whatever that is worth, will probably be a milestone event in the growth of a player, perhaps like AF was a milestone.
I'd like to see the ideas of FFVIII, FFIX, FFX and Monster Hunter meet somewhere in the middle. I'd like to see weapons as something you care for an enhance rather than something you just exchange out for something with better stats. The weapons should be something a little more respected while food, ammo, armor, accessories and such should be the things of cost.
And if upgrading the weapon is what drives access skill growth, then that's all the motivation players are going to need to go out and hunt for the upgrades, pursue guildleves, missions and the like. How we access those skills after the upgrade is a matter I'd like to see addressed in the fashion of FFT or even FFXI's Blue Mage and set points.

Re: FFXIV Character creation details revealed!
How was materia restrictive? You where able to change it in and out, and you didn't need to meet any pre-reqs to use any of it.Originally posted by Firewind View PostYet the materia system garbage to me because it was highly restrictive and had no effect on how characters develop whatsoever...
Just because you didn't like something doesn't make it garbage
.
If FFXIV isn't using a job system I wouldn't mind seeing something like the Sphere Grid system or License board system but knowing SE it's going to be like FFII...

Re: FFXIV Character creation details revealed!
Except that Materia is tradeable, which means for the first time players would be able to level and swap skills with each other! Yeah there's potential for abuse in there but I still think it could be a lot of fun. Simple level restrictions would keep high level players from giving their maxed out materia to newbies for power leveling.Originally posted by Armando View PostMateria was cool but it was very exploitable, not the sort of system you'd want for an MMO unless you impose extra restrictions or limit what can be equipped, and then it becomes nothing special.
---------- Post added at 12:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:07 PM ----------
This is easily fixed; instead of having straight up stat penatlies, they could change Materia to work how Espers did in 6 with the level up bonuses. For instance if you mostly play with magical materia up, your magic stats will raise but your physical stats may suffer and vice versa.Originally posted by Firewind View PostYet the materia system garbage to me because it was highly restrictive and had no effect on how characters develop whatsoever...

Re: FFXIV Character creation details revealed!
Abilities fall into 4 categories: job commands (e.g. Black Magic), Reaction Abilities (trigger when you're attacked), Support Abilities (passive traits like Dual Wield or Equip <Weapon type> regardless of job) and Movement Abilities (stuff like Move+2 or Jump+2.) You gain JP for your current job when you fight, and use that JP to buy abilities from that job.How did FFT system work? I still haven't played it yet lol.
Your character always has the command that corresponds to his job (e.g. Wizards/Black Mages always have Black Magic equipped) and besides that you can freely equip 1 job command, 1 reaction ability, 1 support ability and 1 movement ability that you've learned from any of your other jobs. So you can have a Wizard which, besides Black Magic, has Summoning Magic (SMN's job command), Counter (MNK Reaction Ability), Dual Wield (NIN Support Ability), and Move+2 (Movement Ability, THF I think).
