  • Best Region Ring?

    Good day everyone, I am starting FFXI soon and was just curious on wat region ring (Bastok,San D'oria, or Windurst) is the best for a whm? If there is a post with this alrdy plz tell me, I searched and couldnt find it...

        hmm I think you get a uber boost of 2mp or 1 mnd.... you won't even feel it, start at wherever you like.

          Ok, thanks for everyones help! But I was hoping this would help my decsion on where to start so now I am just even more confused.... ^^lol ohh well

            I'd say it would depend on your race, but the ring you get for your nation usually increases stats that race already has higher than others. Examples of this would be the San d'Orian ring for Elvaans, which gives STR and MND (which they already have more of than other races) and the Windurstian ring giving AGI+ and INT+ for Mithra and Tarutaru respectively (also MP for taru).

              I say go Windurst.

              1) Its the "traditional" home of the TaruTaru.
              2) All the shops there are geared towards mages so you won't have to pay AH prices for your gear/spells.
              3) You will need fame in every nation as WHM for your avatar runs. Starting in Windurst gets the most difficult one out of the way basically for free.
              4) It will actively discourage you from going to Valklurm Dunes as its so far far away and force you into going to Maze of Shakrami which is about 1 billion times better.
              5) Windurst has a truely outstanding set of plot missions (dare I say it the "best" of the 3 nations).
              6) You gonna be killing beetles the rest of your life, kill other stuff in Windy for a while.
              7) Windy actually looks and sounds nice. The surrounding areas also have nice music and look nice too.

                  I actually thought the +3 MP from the Windurstian ring helped when you solo with a WHM sub through the first 10-12 levels. Helps get the extra cure off. MND however meeehhh...

                    i thought soloing as a taru whm was the hardest thing in my life... my first char was a hume, started as whm also and soloing from 1-10 i could hold on my own much better than my taru.

                    once i start PTing tho taru whm really shines... as hume at level 11 i could get cure 2 out twice and that's all the MP I had.

                        my preferred starting place has to be windurst. you can choose either tarutaru or mithra but both races really suck on the MND department. however for the first 10 levels it won't be the issue. windurst has the most beneficial quests for the minimum fame for the lower levels. once you can kill mandragoras you'll get a lot of cornettes and your fame will go up considerably. the quest for justice badge, windshear hat, and blaze spikes (save for your blm sub) require only level 1 or 2 windy fame. the rest of the major whm fame quests require much higher fame but a much higher level as whm.

                        also the mobs are much easier to kill, and the whm-type yaguado drops spells like protectra, sneak, paralyze. windy is cheapest place for saintly rings because of the bonecrafting guild (they are a skillup item). however getting to rank 2-3 is hell, and before you get in any valkrum party move to sandy to get the friars rope and work on fame there. do not skip M3-2, it will give you access to the part of horutoro ruins that has wedigos and a zone into the canal.

                        sandy is the second best place, esp if you want to go as elvaan. the mnd+ ring also has a small defense bonus, also useful for lower levels. leveling fame to hero status is very easy, with flint stones and bat wings. stone eaters in ranperre's tomb drop mnd+1 rings that you can ask a level 75+ bonecrafter to make them into saintlys later on. you can quest friars rope here later. the bad news is you don't have any mobs that give drops useful for whm, and you're stuck to the much weaker mobs. fungus don't become viable until you get poisona because of their nasty poison. they drop mushrooms (whm food) and dark crystals (9k a stack in sandy). like windurst, the quests that require major fame require your job at a much higher level. eventually you want to get to windurst before you make that first trek into valkrum dunes for parties.

                        bastok is by far the worst place. the nation's ring does nothing. only the whm type quadlav has benefical drops. there is just 2 beneficial quests for whm on top of that where minimum fame is needed, not to mention its a pain in the butt to level bastokian fame. you only need enough fame to get the teleport-dem scroll quest at level 5 fame. the mobs are much easier but the money is not that good with exception of quadlav backplates and silver ores. you're going have to get hell out of bastok fast, i move to sandy or windy before you hit valkrum dunes to level.
