Hi there.
In general is doesn't matter if you are high level or low level. The spells you need are the same pretty much through the game.
1) Must have + Very Important
Cure spells (including Curaga)
Protectra spells (buy the downgraded Protect version if you have cash to throw away)
Shellra spells (buy the downgraded Shell version if you have cash to throw away)
-na spells (Silena, Paralyna, Poisona, Cursna, Stona etc)
Barfira (reduces GOB bomb damage)
Sneak, Invisible, Deodorise
All the Raise spells
All the Teleport Spells
Haste
All the Regen spells
2) Nice to have but you can probably live without
barstonra, barwatera etc
3) Might be useful but probably nobody will ever notice if you don't have them.
barparalyna, barpoisona, barsilena etc
4) These spells fall into the "personal use" category and get them as they are usefull in certian situations. Mainly skillups, farming and questing.
Erase, Holy, Banish, Banishga, Flash.
As a side note Erase is not essential until you get 60+ so don't worry if you don't have it straight away.
Well thats my opinion on what spells you should have. Perhaps somebody else has something else to offer as well.

I'd probably put Erase as an essential there... or atleast a "very nice to have" category.
It gets rid of things like atk down, str down, evasion down, and higher level slow. Some of these effect can really mess up your party. It also removes bind when you want to get away from pesky worms.
I bough it and have been using it regularly as BLM/WHM. Don't think I can live without it now. =PJunior Member?

In the ~50s in Garlaige Citadel we had a NIN tank with no BLM, but a SMN and WHM (and probably a RDM). SMN was using offensive blood pacts and the WHM was using Banish II and Holy, also magic bursting on the fusion chain. Interesting party to say the least. Helped that beetles and bats are weak to light though.
*Edit: It helps to have high Divine Magic skill for the above in WHM role. This situation will be from rare to never though as a WHM.
More on-topic:
I'd say Dias and certain enfeebles like Slow and Paralyze are important also (Silence also), especially at lower levels since there's less of a chance of having a Red Mage in the party. Simple obvious things like Poisona you guys forgot as well. Later I'd say the Reraises are very important to have as well. Other things that you might as well have are Silena (cures silence), Cursna (cures curse), Viruna (cures virus), and Stona (cures petrify) since they aren't insanely expensive and just come in handy (Stona being more important).
PS: Silence means that you cannot cast spells, curse makes your HP and MP much lower and makes your walking slow, virus makes you unable to rest and regain HP or MP, and being petrified means you can basically do nothing. I don't want to assume a certain knowledge by the author since it wasn't really clear what he/she did or did not know.

also reputation wise, your party will be pretty unhappy with you if you don't have a certain essential spell and you are of level. doesnt help you later when you want a party even though you may have reconciled. they'll say "oh don't get _____ he didnt have ______ last time we partied"
avoid these situations

There may be some descrepencies as to just how important some spells are, but I rated them based on how hurt I think I would be without a particular spell. Note, that is in general--I use every spell I have quite reguarly with the exception of low level protects/shells since I have the upgrades. Everything from Diaga to Raise III I use at least every couple days, but a lot of them can be lived without. I wouldn't recommend making it to 75 without a complete spell list, but a lot of spells do have limited enough utility that you can make it quite a ways without.San D'orian Taru ~ All the courage of Sandy, all the cute, fluffy qualities of a taru.

*Edit: I guess she could have enfeebled more or something, but the RDM had that pretty much covered too.SAM 74
