One bit of advice everyone else here has overlooked:
Whenever you make money, invest it in making more money, taking only very small profits for gear.
This sounds odd, and dumb, but whenever I've ignored it, I've suffered. Use those fishing and mining funds to start gardening and improving your storage capacity in Mog House and Gobbie Bags. Your up front costs will be unpleasant and it'll seem like a complete waste of time, but later on you start getting returns that justify these costs. Ask anyone growing ores and the like. Heck, the first time I tried growing Ice crystals, I screwed up and grew enough Kazham Peppers to cover all those new brass pots I'd used. Good thing I'd expanded the MH to hold all that stuff.
