Since the PC beta will be arriving in a few weeks and I hopefully managed to get in, I was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips on starting out as a Whm. Like is it better to join a party right away or level up a little by myself, what guild to join, which weapons to use, just stuff like that. Thanks in advance.

Yep
It is not a good idea to party for a while, you need all the exp you can get. Im a blm, and at first it seems like you really suck becasue you fight an easy enemy and youve gotta rest. Since ur a whm u can heal urself, but thats beside the point.
Without a whm in ur party you are screwed, so you will be in very high demand after you gain a respectable level.

Macros eh?Originally posted by StarvingArtist
Learn how to make macros, when it comes to curing, seconds can mean saving someone or seeing them drop dead because you couldn't cure them in time.
Well i sortof know what macros are, but how do exactly make one for ffxi? Or would it be some kind of hotkey system, and you would assign spells to hotkeys?
Well I guess i could hold off for a few weeks and find out, but i am too damn excited to get it. ^_^Full Cursed= O

macros really aren't needed for fast curing in this game which is one thing I really like... ctrl+m, enter, f2-6, enter = all set.Still trying to play way too much...

Theres like a 5 second refresh time for cure. So if your fast enough you can get through without macro's... but have them just in case.
Either macro or remember the ctrl/alt + M command. Don't do it the hard way.Myriam *DEACTIVATED* [Rank 5](Import)

Eck...well, I started off as a WAR, and then changed jobs to WHM so I could crystal harvest, but here's what I've learned so far:
The WHM is a really fun class to play if you're a defensive person, I'm not saying they're a weak class that relies on other people, but having protect and cure, it's a class when you're defensive. You also have to work well under pressure once you join a party, and my advice is join a party when you feel like it, joining early lowers xp gain, but you get experience as a WHM in a party, and don't have to learn right off the bat when a party needs you. Also, weapons, I agree and disagree with previous posts, I would never use a pole since the White Mage's best weapon turns out to be a hammer, and since wands give you + to MND and INT increasing your magic skill. And despite the advice given, you should try joining a guild that you get the items for frequently, such as a blacksmith guild, you find fire crystals, and ores out in the field alot. So it wouldnt be expensive to just dabble in.
Also to note, a WHM as I said isn't a weakling, but play a redmage and a Warrior till about level 3, just so you know that those are better physical classes with weapons...that you will need them in parties later on. Oh well...aside from the advice of getting equipment that enhances your magic skill (Traveler's hat, or the like) that increase MND, I don't have much else to say. Give me a /tell @ the name Pendragon if you need some help or gil, kinda poor right now, been giving it out like water...but I'll do what I can. =P

One thing I do know is that macros are god. One command ur gonna want to remember is the following
/ma "spell name its case sensitive" <t>
that will allow u to macro spells. I figure that the most fun u can have with magic is the small catch phrases u can throw in with spells
lame ex.
Holy Light Cure <t>
/ma "Cure" <t>
this will cause u to say (assume the target is a guy named jon)
Holy light cure Jon
Then you will imediatly start casting cure on him.
While I"m only a L3WHM as a L18 BLM I've had so much fun with these macros.
oh and for anyone that cares
/ja "name" <me> will allow u to use job abilities (the me will target urself)
or /ws "name" <t> will use weapon skills.
try em outWe are not retreating, we are just advancing in another direction

The justice badge from the first Star Onion Brigade quest in Windurst is also great for White Mages(+3 MND!) and easy to get.
Uh, just where does one get a Traveler's Hat? I see them on the Auction House for 2000+ gil, but nowhere else.
Another good item(and hard to get it seems) for White Mages is the Zealot's Mitts. level 11, 3 def, +5 mana, +3 MND, -2 INT. Er, somethin like that.
I also like the San D'Orian ring(+1 str, +1 MND), the Ascetic's Ring(+1 MND), uh . . . there's a level 14 belt from a quest in San D'Oria that gives a MND boost too.
You can also use the wands that give +INT/+MND but otherwise make shoddy weapons. The starting one which is maple I think gives +1/+1 at level . . . 3? At level 9 you can get the +2/+2 one,and I think the +3/+3 one becomes available at level 18.

Ive heard lots of different stuff about the mind stat. Ive heard it controls white magic and ive also heard that i controls magic defense. I think there was an update in the jp version that said only your healing skill affects your white magic. The posts in this thread make it seem that mind affects the power of white magic. I would just like this cleared up so in know whether or not to invest in boosting my whm's mind.

Cure 1 (With Justice Badge): 20HP
Cure 1 (Without Justice Badge): 18HP
The Justice Badge gives a +3 MND boost, so the difference in 2HP represents an increase of 3 MND. This test was conducted at a fixed level (7) and fixed healing level.
So, yes, MND does play a role in healing ability.
