  • Warrior and +Emnity

According to most, the Warrior will likely never be unable to replace a Paladin as the premiere hate-control class in the game, and its likely true. However, Warrior has a lot going for it as a tank with numerous hate-spiking abilities (depending on the sub; usually Monk or Ninja), but no true permanent hate generation (cures are perma-hate). These terms are all taken from the Paladin discussions regarding hate.

My question is; If a Warrior/Ninja dual-wields axes along with the +15 enmity from the AF, will each axe swing (I assume hit or miss, since its believed that +enmity works from an action alone), yielding +30 enmity per swing, quickly, compounded with Provoke, Warcry, Utsusemi and other Ninja hate-building tools (all of which also gain +15 enmity), won't a Warrior be a superb hate-controller as well?

Yeah, he might take more damage than a Sword-Shield Paladin (though constant Defender and Utsusemi buffers might help), but he'll dish out more damage as well vs. a PLD, perhaps killing the mob faster.

    Thoughts?

P.S. I ask these questions because I like tanking (and might end up as a Warrior or Paladin instead of a Monk), but I can't see myself in a Paladin role. The Warrior's versatility, great damage output, and tons of toys draw me more to it.

I can't really comment on the post-40 game, but up until 40 or so, WAR can definitely tank quite well; I've been doing it with greataxe and MNK sub, using basically every ability I have when it's up, except for Warcry and Berserk (canceled immediately) which I use to pull hate back if a ranger uses Barrage or a BLM goes overboard on the nukes.

Combined with my constant use of fishkabobs when tanking (expensive, but well worth it; I have more DEF than any non-foodeating PLD I've grouped with, by far), I do as good a job as a decent PLD, and a better job than a bad one. Good ones will still out-tank me by a fair margin, though, but I can live with that, since I prefer beating the crap out of things to having things beat the crap out of me.

I plan on leveling my NIN sub at some point in the next few weeks, so I'll probably have things to report about that in the near future, too.

Well when the time for your AF comes and you wear the body piece you will see it is rather easy to keep a mob sticking to you. But one of the problems with war tanking later in the game (pre 74 with nin sub) is you are taking more damage then a PLD therefore causing the mages to sink more MP in you to keep you alive which really cuts down on the exp chains, you also cannot heal yourself like a PLD to save some of the mana strain on the mages and kepp the hate squarely focused on you.

Now your point about the mob dieing faster is nice theoritcally, it just doesnt fit. To be a good war tank you suggested using Utsusemi which is nice but only good for 3 hits, Defender will lower your attack which decreases damage output rather significantly and you will also have to eat fish mithkabobs or crab rather then meat mithkabob so therefore no attack boost from food either to help kill faster. This makes you a rather inefficent tank and an inefficent damage dealer due to all the things now unavailable to boost attack so you can keep your defense at respectable levels.

Anyways all just my opinion, have fun playing war
