Great Sword Proliferation

Last night I went back to Qufim to level Monk, and I noticed that a rather high percentage of the Warriors that I saw and grouped with were using Great Swords.

Over the course of the party, there were 4 different warriors, 3 of which used Great Swords (one was using a Great Axe). No fewer than 5 warriors in parties near ours were using them as well.

As this was making skill chains rather useless (Water effect against crabs and pugs.. tried gobs, but the WHM kept pulling hate ><) I asked if any of them had any other weapons that they could use. Only one piped up, and that was to say that he didn't care about skill chains, by god, he was going to get teh Barbarian's Sword at 24!!!11!!

Is there something that I'm missing before I flame the next Warriors that I see using Great Swords exclusively? Has there been a change that makes them worth using by low-20's warriors in groups that can't chain with them?

not that I know about.. most people that play in qufim though are semi new and probably use it because they think it looks cool

Can't you just use:

Power Slash --> Hard Slash --> Distortion(Ice/Water)

All you need is 2 Gswd with at least 30 a skill lvl..

you shouldnt base your judgements on what to use from a few WARs in quifm. They probably were leveling that up for a future job after they reach 30 like DRK or PLD. But if you see some higher level WARs using weapons like that post please.

Definately not using them to make my decisions, it was just shocking to me to see so many using Great Swords.

Ya, I suppose they could have done Power -> Hard, I think we were using Hard -> Shoulder Tackle (Water), didn't see the level 2 for some reason..

Right now on phoenix there is 4 NA war in my level range (38-40) that i've grouped with. There's me, i use mostly axe and great axe with mnk,thf or whm sub depending on my role in pt, i can also use a spear but it's slacking a bit. My Sj are leveled to mnk 17, thf 19 and whm 32.

Other wars, 1st is war/thf, i think his sj is 16 and he's now 40 (maybe higher) he use sword/shield combo, 2nd is war/mnk, sj is lvl 15 and he use a great axe last time i saw him he was lvl 38, 3rd one is war/whm sj is lvl 17 and he use a great sword, this one was level 40 trying to find a group yesterday in CN.

Last time i saw them was yesterday evening. Makes me wonder how can some of these players get group using those kind of weapons and having a single sj. war/mnk with great axe is good but other s/s and great sword with whm sub, that sounds more like pld wanna be.

These info are the best i could gather by watching them and grouping with them, i never saw them use another weapon, neither tell they could use another, those weapon/sj combo are the one i see them usually when they are in groups.

I did play my whm yesterday a bit and ended with a war/thf 30/15 with a great sword in a kazham group yesterday.

Edit : Not many players will use great axe at lvl 20-30 cause of the lack of a good/cheap great axe. Lvl 20 neckchopper go for 30-40k and can't be obtained by a lvl 20 war solo and lvl 25 plantbane go for 10-15k, but keeping a moth axe from lvl 16 to 25 is usually quite hard since it will deal low dmg at lvl 23-24. This is probably a reason why many war upgrade to 2h sword in 20-30 lvl range since they're cheaper and there is less lvl gap between upgrades.

Well, as a WAR that's almost to that range that you're talking about...I've got my One handed sword over 30, my polearm over 50 and now i'm building my Great Axe.

I for one was a WAR that thought that speciality in a weapon was better than diversifying. Now that i've partied a lot more, i've found that being flexable is almost mandatory.

it could be that these WAR's that you've seen and partied with just need to be told how they could be so much more effective and wanted in a party if they mixed it up a bit.

Next time just give them so advice...if they choose not to take it...they're probably bad WAR's anyways. I've learned so much from more expierienced players, that i never would have really known without them giving me the advice to make me a better WAR.

Yeah, your frusteration did show...but it's totally understandable.

Most likely these WARs (pre lv 30) plan to go DRK. They are using 2H sword because that is what they will use as a DRK and see no benefit in raising any other weapon. Just like most WAR that intend to go DRG will be using a spear pre-30. Basically WAR is just a temp SJ to them on the way to the "real" jobs.
