  • Thf equip and food

Thf was my favorite job in the game, but I put it off for about a year now and sold all my gear. Now getting back all my gear, I'm having some confusion on what to use due to prolong abscence from this job. Thf is 56, subbing nin.

Firstly, the daggers. I used to use kidney dagger as main, and hornetneedle as sub. But with the tp gain marginally the same as 2 kidney daggers, I'm thinking about just using 2 kidney daggers. I also have capped crit+ merit, so +14% crit hit rate is pretty damn sexy, which brings up my second question. A lot of people use corsair's for +10 atk, but in my mind, 5% crit+ has always been superior since critical hits could almost double your dmg in regular swings and boost your ws damage significantly. Am I wrong for using 2x kidney daggers or am I missing something about corsairs since that seems to be the favorable choice for many thfs? Even with 1 kidney dagger and capped merit, a lot of my hits were criticals. I just can't imagine the dmg I'll be dishing out with 2 of them.

What food should I be using? I always thought sole sushi would be the food of choice. The accuracy would help tremendously with hits, and even more so when I get DE. The str would help my regular hits and ws. However, a lot of people go for squid for the agi and dex. So my question is this: whats more important overall? +5 str, or +5 agi? I believe agi only effects trick attack dmg (by how much, I don't know, could even be marginal), but str will effect every swing. Does the agi boost really help with SATA enough to justify giving up 5 str?

Your AGI will only affect your 1st hit of your DE, your 4 other (or more if DoubleA/TripleA) hits, well STR will have a small impact. Personally I would use sole, either way with TAU I use meat mostly ;s. but sole would be my choice in the sushi department

I've heard that DE is notorious at missing at lvl 60. I also put 5 merits into dagger, which is the max it'll effect my thf at 56, so I'll be getting DE at lvl 58 or 59? Anyways, I would still have a problem landing every hit on DE at that lvl right? I always thought sushi was a good idea until 70s to make sure DE lands every single hit. Then past then when you're picking on VTs and weaker mobs, haste gear and hecta is the way to go.

Sub war, /nin TP gain was nerfed a while ago. Also, in my opinion weapon damage is king. Corsair's Knife isn't good because of the atk bonus but because it offers the highest base damage at its level. When you gain access to the harpe type knives your damage sky rockets because they have a high base damage.

I considered that as well. But tp gain with /war and /nin is similar. Delay is slightly less with DW2, but war has double attack. Of course war also gets berserk and atk+, but at that lvl, atk is a diminishing return on dmg. However, 5% more on crit plus with the second kidney dagger should more than make up for the absence of berserk.

No chance in hell. Minuet adds tons of damage even when eating food, so there is no way you can reach high enough atk to start suffering from diminishing returns against exp mobs. Berserk owns and the atk bonus trait is nice also.

NIN sub gives DW2, which increases attack speed slightly, but it also reduces TP gained per hit. Double attack increases overall attack speed about as much as DW2 does but does not reduce TP gained per hit. NIN sub also gives you stat bonuses from the off-hand knife, but until SE starts giving out daggers with +100 atk there is no way it can compete with Berserk. +5% crit is a nice bonus, but it loses to the raw power of /WAR. Also, there are some shields (though mostly expensive ones) that add atk.

Power isn't the only thing a Thf needs. /nin allows for vesatility. You can do much more as Thf/nin than you can as Thf/war outside and inside of parties. It doesn't necessarily happen very often, but what does a Thf/war do when the tank dies and the mob faces him? A /nin can tank it for at least 30 seconds, but I should think a /war with berserk active would get 3~4 shotted. Also, people don't continue to sub nin because they're stubborn. More likely it's ignorance, many players don't even know about the TP patch or what affect it had. Thf/war is a purely exp oriented setup and many people just don't want to switch jobs after exping just so they can go farm. Like way back when <,< I would take an escape to Zitah after parties in boyhada so that I could farm goobbues. As a /war it would've been a waste of time because I would have to rest every few fights.

Both subs have their pros/cons. Neither is a better setup; it's up the player to decide what they prefer more:

              Power or Versatility?

With great power comes complete disregard for any and all responsibility.

Watch as their provoke doesn't pull hate off the other melee or BLM?

In any event, should a THF actually pull hate and hold hate... ANY THF should be able to last at least 30 seconds, regardless of subjob. Unless the THF put up perfect dodge because they didn't feel like throwing up shadows on a pull. >_>a

I've pulled hate with regular attacks lol.

Second part I agree with though.

                    Re: Thf equip and food

Personally - as Thf 57, I tend to go with meat dishes and Corsair's / Hornetneedle as a combo if using /Nin, and using as much accuracy gear as I can shoehorn in.

I realise that my accuracy is below the level I would net using Sole Sushi, but - I find the difference in straight DoT is worth the sacrifice.

If I'm in an area where Windi has regional control, I personally use Fed Cuffs, Gaiters, Walk Mask, Spike Earrings x2, with Dex Rings and an Acc Belt to gain TP with, just so that I don't suffer from the single digit hit problem and swapping in:

Drone Earrings, RK Belt, Leaping Boots, Emp Pin, Rogue's Armlets and Culottes for SATA at this level, although I'll probably tweak that a little when I finally reach 60.

I have honestly pondered the Kidney Knife a lot, and dualling them is very tempting, although I don't have the merits to really enjoy the full benefits of it. The delay difference between using Corsairs + HN vs Kid/Kid would be minimal at best, and although you'd lose a fraction of your DoT, with enough Attack in your gear/food you'd probably put out some amazing DoT if you were willing to forgo TP gain. Thinking about it, I may change the Corsairs out for a pair of Kidney's - especially with a Corsair in the party with Rogue's Roll and Fighter's Roll... I can well imagine the output would be sweet.

And yes with the right gear/party setup you can reach the point of diminishing returns of attack - you get to a point where your knives will do consistent damage.

If you've got SH/Peti + Snipers + Life Belt, I would seriously consider using Meat just to make your regular (non crit DoT) feed the mob less TP per hp.

You don't. When I farm diatrymas (L47-51) on my 72 THF, I'm miles away from a soft atk cap. When I pop a mithkabob I deal significantly more damage, but I also get very close to the soft cap. If I further increase the difference between my atk and the enemy's def by shooting at it with an acid bolt, I notice only a very small difference in damage.

Well - I've had level 60 Dark Knights ask me how at 40 I'd be able to get as much attack as they had, because I'd used a lot of the regional control gear and a lot of HQ stuff.

                        But that's just me.

As far as equipment, if it were me at 56, I would have setups ready for both /WAR and /NIN. Main hand Corsair's, it has a 16% higher base Damage than Kidney Dagger. For /WAR get a Strike Shield and for /NIN off-hand use your Kidney or another Corsair's. For the rest of your equip, it is really a personal choice: +Acc gear and +Atk food, or +Atk Gear and +Acc food - In my experience they are about equal during the 50's. Squid v. Sole - +5 STR v. +5 AGI I think they are equally effective, thus it comes down to price and Squid is generally cheaper on Garuda.

Go farm and get good acc+rng acc gear. Cap your marksmanship.
Use yellow curry, sushi sucks unless the mob is like 47 levels higher than you.
I have had /war and /nin leveled forever, yet I have never gotten to use /war since I leveled it up so I can't tell you about that. >< Since around level 58-62ish (I'm still 62) you have to pull a lot of fast mobs like raptors and toramas, utsusemi is indeed nice. For daggers I used Corsairs/Hornetneedle, and currently use Darksteel Kukri+1/Trailors Kukri (which helps with tp gain a lot, the extra 14 rng acc is nice when spamming acid bolts.) I plan on switching to DK+1/Garudas at 65, then Harpe (Regular not Hoplites) in main hand at 67 is it? Next pt I don't have to pull, I'm gonna see if I can sub war and I'll get back to you guys on how that was.

I tried out /war in Onzozo vs toramas and it was consistently able to do 1000+ to them. I would like to try it next in the ToAU areas where everyone fights really weak mobs. As /nin last night I was doing 1200+ (ToAU mobs) so I'm sure /war could have been even sicker than that. Has anyone ever used /drk? I'm debating leveling it to try it.
