  • Newb THF question

Greetings. I'm completely new to the game and have been playing for only a week now. Aside from being slightly overwhelmed with all there is to learn I am loving it so far and only regret not discovering FFXI earlier.

My character is currently a lvl 10 THF. My long range goal is to be a RNG/THF. My question is whether it is worth it to take time to level as a MNK sub once I reach lvl 18 for the 12 levels until I can become a RNG? Should I just devote my time to THF exclusively until lvl 30 or should I stop and lvl MNK at 18? Thanks for any advice. I read a bunch here looking for this answer but have not found it yet.

Lv Thf to lv18 then lv Mnk to lv15 so as its a fully lved sub for when you lv Thf to 30. Then You can lv Rng to 60 before having to lv your Thf sub again. Always best to have fully lved sub's, it makes you more powerful and party leaders are more likely to invite you. Also I'd recomend Rng/Nin (Higher Agi) or Rng/War (More damage) over Rng/Thf.

Thanks for the advice. On that basis I'll go with a WAR sub for my eventual RNG. I can start WAR now rather than MNK and do THF/WAR until RNG opens up. That will also allow me to keep leveling Archery and Marksmanship with the WAR instead of the MNK.

Do thief/war. Everyone needs a warrior subjob at some point; you'll have to level it eventually. You'll probably want to try ranger/ninja. Leveling ninja requires /war.

I'm level 65 now (gotten 248 total job levels) and have never really felt the need to level up monk for a subjob.
        You know I'm right.

If you like your life, go rng/nin.

Was yesterday in a nice party in the hellhole CN, and the Rumble hitted me for 100+ dmg crits. for over 250 dmg at 750hp max. With no shadows i would be done for it....

Other example: I forgott the shadows when i pulled the mob as a lv60 thf, i came back to camp death. Dmg taken over 1k with 2 crits of the Torama.

Also the /mnk supp keeps you away from tanking in the Dunes

If you plan to play ranger you shouldn't level thief past L15 for now. /thf is NOT a good sub job for ranger and should only be used as a sub when farming (collecting items and gil solo). /nin is by far the best sub for ranger simply because you will take a lot of damage and possibly die a lot without Utsusemi.

A thief sub doesn't really give you anything useful except the additional stats and the ability to flee when your party is about to wipe, which by the way, should not happen.

              Warrior L30, Dragoon L45+, Thief L70+, Paladin L25+, Monk L15+, Ninja L35+ , Ranger 40+

Ok, if I follow this advice then from lvl 15 -30 until RNG and NIN open up should I lvl WAR as my main rather than THF? I really don't want to tank, but if that is going to build a better character to have a lvl 30 WAR as a sub than a lvl 30 THF then I'll do it.

Its a good idea but if you get war to 15 youll still have a decent sub to get your ninja to 30 and you wont need to lv it again untill your rangers 60. I think you should go Thf to 15, change to War take it to 37 and then take Nin to 37 then start Rng. Easier lving your subs first. I want to go Rng/Nin but its so expensive these days so I'm taking Thf to 75 first so I can get enough cash to lv rng relatively easily/quickly. I mean to get my Nin to 37 is going to set me back 500kGil+ as it is.
