  • Lockpicking FAQ

Well I decided to start a thread about lock picking because I really think that there are alot of misperceptions floating around FF11. But since I don’t know alot about coffers/treasure chests  I will leave it up to others to answer questions with their plethora of knowledge.

    Tools:

**Note** prices of the tools are before the new update (12/8/04)+(12/14/04).

    Thief's Tools

Generally speaking they are the cheapest of the tools used; prices tend to stick around the 10k range (per stack).

    Living Key

Cost usually around 15k (per stack) people will say they are better than thief tools but nothing has been proven, yet.

    Skeleton Key:

Skeleton key will run you around 30k-35k (per stack). Using the skeleton key can give you a weakness. You can also get a mimic while using them.

    FAQ:

-You cannot open a coffer or chest while you are weekend or invis’d

-MUST have a thf main to open a coffer/chest!!

-You can open a coffer/chest while being attacked

-You can open a coffer/chest with the Perfect Dodge ability active.

-Coffer as well as chests spawn randomly

(Will add more when finals are done. Feel free to correct/add anything)

Coffers dont spawn randomly, they have a spawn time of ~30-60 mins unless its for RSE in which time they spawn immediately after they are opened (supposedly).

Living Keys can also get you weakend after popping a coffer, it isnt just skel keys

Uh...coffers can have a spawn time of 30 mins or less...i've seen it quite a few times. I got 20 minutes just the other night..was timing it to.

i said ~30... ive gotten them in less as well but its usually around 30 mins. Ive also gotten them 45 mins after last spawn and so on. The 60 min ones might have been a double spawn, still not sure cause i didnt see any other coffers

              Random thoughts on the subject:

RSE comes in chests, not coffers. Small, but important, distinction. Also, when I've done rse quests with linkshell, a new chest does not pop immediately after one of them gets the key item.

I never used living keys, ever. I've used probably 5 stacks of thief tools in my career, and 3 stacks of skeleton keys. Thief tools have had a substantially better success rate for me. Could be a statistical fluke, I suppose, but it *certainly* doesn't justifty paying 3x more for keys that are worse for me.

I've sworn that I will never ever use skeleton keys again. They both spawn mimics from coffers, they both weaken you from chests and coffers. Furthermore, my failure rate with skeleton keys isn't any lower than with regular tools. I remember using my last 7 skeleton keys on a coffer in Ifrit's Cauldron, failing each time, then switching to thief tools and getting it on my first pick.

Coffers have a respawn time between 20-90 minutes. If you see someone pop a mimic, when it despawns (about 3 minutes later) a new coffer will appear within a minute or two. People claim that unopened coffers will despawn and appear elsewhere after a certain amount of time, but I don't believe it. I remember trying to get my newton mov coffer and seeing it at an inaccessable section of the zone (before we knew about firesand, etc...) repeatedly over the course of a day and a half.

Chest gil seems to be about 3-9k (solo).
Coffer gil seems to be about 9k - 17k (solo).

Picking a coffer in a party multiplies the gil by some smaller number then distributes it to everyone. So (just picking numbers to illustrate a point), a coffer with 10k in it is picked by a thief in a 5-member group. Everyone gets 7.5k (37,500 gil total). Furthermore, if it was an item in the coffer, the thief does NOT automatically get it. The item is placed in the treasure pool and anyone can lot on it. >.<

People will say that Stat X affects lockpicking. Unless Stat X is your character level, ignore them. There's no proof that more agility/dex/accuracy/+steal/+gilfinder/+mug/subjob/moonphase/time of day/current day/direction you're facing/how full your inventory is/etc... increases your odds of whatever, and until the SE devs say that Stat X is a factor, I'm not going to pay any attention to that. The only thing I can say is that at level 41, I failed a full stack of thief tools on an ifrit's cauldron coffer, and at level 51, I was picking them pretty regularly (0-3 fails/coffer).
              You know I'm right.

Well.... when I went to pick my coffer for my AF gloves in Monastic Caverns, I went through about 6 Thief Tools, failing every time. Then I used a single Skeleton Key and it opened. However, other than that, I have never had any problems opening things with Thief Tools. For the record, of all the coffers I've picked, I've never popped a Mimic. I have been weakened... but never got a Mimic. I'm probably just lucky.

I don't have too much experience but this is what has happened to me so far.

                          Thief Tools:
I've gotten weakened a few times and failed a few times too. Used 2-3 stacks total to pick the locks for RSE.

                          Living Keys:
                          Haven't really tried them.

                          Skeleton Keys:
I've only failed once or twice and I think i'm on my 3rd or 4th stack of these.

On another note, I really think that all keys can give you weakened state or mimic or whatever. Only thing is that only coffers can have Mimics.
