Anyone can open them if they have the proper key (which drop in the zone where you chest/coffer is)
But a thief as a main job is the only job which can open these things without the proper keys. -

You use items on the chest/coffer. They are thieves tools, living keys and skeleton keys. They are listed from cheapest to most expensive.
The downside is, you can randomly get bad affects when you try to pick a treasure box. A chest sometimes will have a trap instead of treasure and can reduce your max HP and MP greatly. A coffer can turn out to be a mimic (a monster). If you are not lucky enough to survive his stun and subsequent free 2 or 3 hits before you get off perfect dodge you are dead. BTW you won't be soloing a mimic anytime soon.Comment
