  • Question about thieves and lockpicking

Hello, I was wondering about the thief's ability to pick treasure chests using the thief's tools and i had a few questions. It is hard to find readily available information on this subject.

    1) Is it possible for thief to pick coffer with thief's tools?
    2) What is the difference between the 3 types of lockpicking tools, skeleton key, living key, and thief's tools?
    3) What affects the success rate of lockpicking?
    4) What is the respawn time for a picked chest? (or coffer if possible)
    5) How do you get the best success rate (see #3)
    6) Is this a popular method of farming for thieves?

    Thanks!1

I havent tried but i dont think its worth trying....

    2) What is the difference between the 3 types of lockpicking tools, skeleton key, living key, and thief's tools?

    Skeleton is best rate
    living is middle
    thiefs is lowest

    3) What affects the success rate of lockpicking?

    Your lvl basically
    4) What is the respawn time for a picked chest? (or coffer if possible)

    30 mins to 1 hour

    5) How do you get the best success rate (see #3)

Its just lvl higher = better rate

    6) Is this a popular method of farming for thieves?

Ive made millions doing it so u choose.

1| Of course, that's why they are "Thief's Tools" Use them to open coffers and chests easily without having to kill monsters for the keys.

2| Although, still not sure but I believe one has a higher *open* rate than the other. Skeleton -->Living-->Other...forgot name ><. Basically, the more expensive the better it is. Sometimes this isn't true though.

3| Has it even been determined on these boards? I'm not to sure, try search .

4| Can be anywhere from 1-50 Minutes or more I believe. I've had one pop-->open-->saw one around the next corner a few seconds later.

5|Same^^ Hopefully someone can answer this.

6| Well shit..I didn't read the question right..I knew that would happen. Any thief that has keys could make a ton opening coffers. Just be prepared for those Mimics and some aggro's every now and then if your not carefull.

What level thief should you get to before trying your hand on picking coffers and such? Are there easier locations for lower level thieves? I can sneak and invis my way around pretty easily.

Once I get my goldsmithing high enough I'm going to make thieves tools out of my spare iron ingots. And once my alchemy is higher I'll also be able to make my own living keys.

Around 50 or so is when I was told to go coffer hunting. Just in case you get hit you wont die D: ....even with blink it can be a pain if aggro (hate doesn't always work everywhere).

the first time i used thiefs tools was to open my rse chest. on my first time, i opened it in Gusen mines, and viola a "magical pattern" i quickly warped to jueno for my rse and went back to gusen after that i failed 2 times opening the chests and i got a 30 minute weakness, on both times i was wearing a piece of RSE, i never tried it w.o wearing and RSE peices. anyways anyone know what the sucess rate is based on, i have heard that it is based on dex and then i have heard that it is based on int, as a mithra i have about 50+ dex at level 32 and about 34 int,
any of you thiefs ever wonder why ur base int is higher than ur str or vit? i think that the int affects steal/coffer/chest opening chances. i cant prove it tho. its just my theory.
