I know from personal experience that if you throw enough thief tools at a coffer, it will indeed open.
BTW, how much are thief tools selling for on your server? They are rarely for sale at the AH, so they're up to 11,000 gil/dozen. Living keys are only 15k. I've never used one. Are they substantially better than thief tools?
I heard someone say that they thought living keys made mimics spawn more often. I imagine they were just making that up, but I'd be interested to see your input. You know I'm right.

I open coffers on a regular basis and did all my AF coffers at levels 50 and 51.
I have NEVER had a mimic spawn on me, and to give you a heads up on experience, I have NEVER used a skeleton key. I found living keys to be the most productive for the least money spent. My first AF coffer was monastic caverns at 50, tried a living key and it popped open first try. Second Coffer was Zvahl Baileys, took 2 living keys this time, but still no weakened state or mimic, just a failure first attempt. 3rd coffer was Oztroja... It took me 4 Living keys, no mimic, no weakened state, just failures.
I now swear by living keys, I dont bother buying thf tools or skeleton keys. I have since opened coffers in Eldieme, Crawlers Nest, and Quicksand Caverns with only Living keys.

If you plan on opening any coffers by yourself, 50 is the level you will most likely want to start at. This allows you to sub red mage or white mage allowing you the ability to sneak and invis yourself. If you go earlier than that, you will have to use powders and oils which arent very productive in the long run...

I am a level 30 THF/NIN so i have invis and i dont mind spending like 500 gil per silent oil, i usually carry them anyways if i want to go to norg. do you think i will be able to open some chests/coffers?
also i have heard that dex and int help you open chests, is this true? BTW i am a Mithra. so my dex is a little higher than normal. where do you suggest i go and open chests to get make a good profit?, thanks

Yes i was a LV 62 Ranger but now i really broke and wanna lvl up my thief. Im lvl 30 thief ninja right now and was wondering when can i start doing coffer hunting, like in Yagudo castle since it has 100k ring. Is it ok to start at LV 30 if you use powders or oils?

Mimic killed me once in Monastic Cavern. I didn't have my 2hr macroed. So I was all paniced and fumbling around trying to activate my 2hr. I died. LOL.
Those things hit FAST! 3 hits in 1 sec one me.
Got the gauntlets on the 2nd try. :spin:
