I thought status effect bolts/arrows have crap for damage? I know the stun bolt is 1 damage. Continuously firing low damage sleep arrows might not be worth it I'm thinking?

Even with an up to date bow (+1 longbow type) the damage is still abysmal. It's something to the tune of 40 points less damage per shot vs horn arrows.
Sleep arrow effects are roughly 8-10 seconds per arrow. At the usual going rate for these, you might be better off paying someone to heal you if you want to solo. :/ The only really good use I can see for these is sleeping links or maybe sleeping something to beat feet if you're not a thief. I'm not even sure how effective that will be at later levels.

I know it's not quite the same, but... Let's say you have two swords, one is D3, the other is D6.
The D6 will do more than 3 extra points of damage than the D3.

Heh, thats about what it comes out for me. Actually I guess it's more like 34-35. I generally deal about 2 points more damage per shot, per point of weapon damage increase on IT mobs.
Any additional attack % you get from anything widens this gap substancially.
