Im new to the game and I'm trying to find out what job I want to be, and Thief is one of my choices which i am debating. I am wondering if some of you fellow thiefs can maybe lend as much information about this job as you can to try to influence my decision. Thanks a bunch.

ive leveld thf a bunch..and they are my favorite people to grp with besides whm now......
from 1-15 it will be slow :dead: amazingly slow in fact....level up sword and dagger at same time.....when you get treasure hunter and sneak attack...partys will love you ^^ (make macro for sneak attack+fastblade)...u will always have place in skull hunting partys because of treasure hunter...from 15-30 u get moderate partys..no skills worth mentioning really then at 30 u get the super amazingly rare trick attack XD (make a macro for sneak+trick+ weapon skill) then u will own!...people will love you because you'll tear thru your current prey (yhoator mandragoras)..then at 33 you will do between 350-400 every 1 minute..with the amazing dagger weapon skill viper bite (sneak+trick attack+ viper bite macro here)...combine it with good weapon skill you will do a skill chain worth around 500-600 and not get any hate O_O..then at 35 u get mug...it wil get you a little extra gil every 15 minutes...^^ thats all i know atm...i havnt experienced fighting with a level 40 thf ='(Minusdkp (Hades) 75WHM, 75MNK, 71DRK, 49NIN

Thief and monk are vastlly different jobs, and your choice will depend on what role you feel you will enjoy in the game.
Thief:
-At low levels thieves are simpler weaker warriors.
-After level 15, thieves role becomes that of a damage dealer. This stays fairly consistent up until level 40+... you can deal enough damage that I've been asked to parties to replace a black mage.
-At the higher levels, once the advanced jobs get their good weapon skills, you will no longer be seen as a major source of damage. Your main job from that point onwards is hate control. You keep the mobs attention focused on the tank so that the other damage dealers can do their jobs without getting attacked.
Monk:
-At low and mid levels, monks are deal reasonably good damage over time and are fairly good tanks as well.
-At high levels your hp becomes phenenomal, but you can't tank worth beans because your defense isn't high enough. However, you get consistently better and better at dealing damage until at the top of the game, it's been argued monk outdamagesdark knight.
I really love thief, I think I would find monk fairly boring in comparison... there's no arguing its a good job, however you may have a slightly harder time finding parties as a monk. I NEVER see any higher level monks

Heres what I would do.
lvl monk to lvl 18 (Very easy solo lvling compared to THF)
Do subjob Quest
lvl as thf/mnk (Makes life easier) for as long as you want, untill you hit 30, in which case you'll need to consider advanced jobs.Psalm 137:8, "O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us - he who seizes your infants and dashes their brains against the rocks." - In God We Trust
