  • Lack of daggers...

I'm a level 12 THF in Bastok and I cannot find a knife, or any other dagger to upgrade to. Currently I have a brass dagger which is definately not cutting it...literally. Where should I travel to get better equipment? Also, what is the best path to get from Bastok to Windhurst? Thanks

While I am no authority on Final Fantasy XI, and indeed, you're higher level to me, as a Bastokian (Bastoker?) I too have felt the plight of the lack of usable daggers for the lower levels. What worked for me was simply to stop using them. From what I have read daggers only become a thief's best friend later in levels, 30ish or so, I believe. I purchased a nice level 7 sword, Sapara, I think the name was, and a wooden shield, and I'm doing much better. You might want to switch to a warrior if you haven't done so yet to work your sword skill up, so you don't end up trying to fight foes around your level and only hitting once in a blue moon.

I tried using a knife as a 13 thief, bah it sucks. I have 1 skill in dagger and will only level it at 15. I use lgionaires knuckles and sapara/maple shield. Sword/Grapple > Dagger until 33 Dagger > anything.

The daggers prior to Decurion's Dagger are somewhat lackluster.

It is better that you use grapples and one hand sword in the beginning of the game. Good job ! One of the few who actually is doing that Hayate.

Well, I decided to go the sword route and bought a lvl 12 sword. I went from 0 skill to 34 (same as dagger) in just one night! I'll stick with that until 18.

Yeah...early on in a thief's career, daggers are somewhat disappointing. The only reason I use a dagger when I play THF is simply to level it up, since my grapple skill is already maxed out (my main job is MNK).

                What to level next? (DRK!)

I reccomend claws until level 33 (at level 33 you can get the LV 100 weaponskill for dagger as a thief).

Combo Fist + Backstab is amazing, especially if you throw in sweet equipment and mithran kabobs (mithkabob?) into the mix.

don't JUST skip out on not leveling the dagger though, because you don't want to go though 100 levels in dagger leveling now do you?

                      Skills

I use a dagger at this point because my sword skills are still maxed out from being a redmage, but I would definitely switch back and forth. If I cap on one, I'll switch to the other just to cap that out as well. Got to get those WS.

What should thieves be using in the mid-late 20's (after Decurion Dagger / Mercenary Knife)? There seems to be a gap from 20-30, do we have to go sword again there?

There are two daggers that can be crafted from Mercenary Knife, I would think they essentially are merc. kinfe +1 and merc. knife +2 but they are called Windurstian Knife and Federation Knife. Federation Knife being the best dagger I've seen up till lvl 34, both have a lvl req of 25.
