My brother wants to start a theif but he wants to use a bow when he can get an advanced job. Would he have to then sub Theif and use Ranger as his main. Or could he keep main Theif and sub Ranger?

You can use either Thf/Rng or Rng/Thf and still use the bow.
Since Thf does have the ability to use a bow. And subbin Rng will allow you to use the bow's Weapon Skills.
However, you'll be better off using Rng/Thf if you want to specialize in bow. Because Rng makes much better long range fighters than a Thf.
But dont forget to check out the Rng forum, people over there say Rng/Thf aint that great of a combo.Hello

The biggest problem with Ranger/Thief is that the abilities on Thief don't compliment Ranger very well. However, the advangtages are having more money (which is a big plus for Ranger), and a small stat bonus. Ranger's have a B rating in Daggers, so I could maybe see Decieving Blow (or whatever its called) as a means to shift hate in a party, however, that won't be until later in the game, and a B rating in weapons supposedly doesn't score many hits at that time.
If you were intent on using a Bow as your main weapon, I would probably stick to Ranger as your Main job, Thief is better off with daggers and Sneak Attack/Triple Attack/Decieving Blow(?). Most importantly though, is what YOU (or your brother) want to play as. If you really want it in game and can make it work, go for it, I know I am!

Great. Well he wants to specialize in bows so I figured the same. I think it would be sweet having a Theif because of all the item and gil bonuses they receive.Creon Arcais - Rank 6 San d'Orian
Black Mage-70 White Mage-41
Red Mage-6 Monk-10
Thief-47 Warrior-30
Dark Knight-11 Summoner-26
Ranger - 22 Dragoon - 15
