Honestly, I think there is an EASY solution to this problem...Why not add in new summons the way they introduced Carbuncle. They don't have to be very STRONG summons..just things that some of the lower level summoners can get. In my opinion - YES, summoners should take a lot of work to get powerful the whole thing about being a summoner is that it isn't easy, you HAVE to work for it ..and personally that challenge appeals to me. I am currently a leveling up my summoner and I do admit that it sucks only have Carbuncle and the slightly slightly useful Spirits...

Anyway - I'm just rambling but I guess what I'm trying to say is..I think they should add some of the mini- summons from previous FF games (Slyph, Fairy,Chocobo?) that can be obtained through a "Carbuncle" type quest that can only be completed at a certain level.

For instance to obtain Fairy you need to find a...uhhh.."Pixie Wing" off of Fly type enemies (Damsflys, Crane Flys, etc.) and speak to xxx in Windurst. xxx tells you that you need to kill 50 enemies and then you can harness the power of the Pixie Wing to call Fairy. To do this quest maybe they can limit it to level 20+. That way the lower level summoners can fiddle with Carbuncle for a bit then do this quest and have Fairy and Carbuncle to play with and can tide them over for at LEAST a little bit..I know this was a bad example for a quest but I'm not that creative - I'm sure the developers could think something up.

IMO I don't see anything wrong with this and I think this is the way they should have implemented Summoners ( Including the fights for the higher level summons) *shrug* Maybe I'm just dreaming

All I can say is that if you dont like how the journey seems and how much work you need to put in to become a summoner then * DONT DO IT* If you can't stand waiting then summoner isn't the job for you.

The advice given by people here comes with a great deal of experience - I am listening to some of it..some of it I'm going to do my own way (I'm not leveling my WHM to level 60..) So just keep at it - if you get your summons, get your AF armor, and get to level 70 on your OWN then you are truly deserve respect because this is NOT an easy job..
Yesterday is history, tommorow a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.

One of the problems having to get to 60 is that you will see alot of the world by then, so as you level up summoner you won't really be exploring anything new 'been there done that' kind of thing.
I want to explore the whole world and the story for the first time, as the job I want.

I don't know, I kinda like the fact that SE made it so you have to be high lvl to obtain the summons. If smn wasn't like that I'm sure every other whm would be maining smn as soon as they hit 30. I wish they had left the uber fame in each city part out of getting the quest though.

Also I keep hearing that SMNs become an uber class once they hit 70+, but having yet to see a high lvl SMN in action can someone explain why 70 is the magical number

This is why I'm going to get to level 60 WHM and go get all the summons then start my summon job.

Um... I still think the summons should be able to be attained progressively, not all at 60+, thats really lame. People should be able to start their job when they get it and when they want to start it, not thirty levels later...

And I'll agree wtih the aforementioned... Don't give the Gods right away, give like, minor summonings to aide you. I can see that being able to control the avatars should be LONG and arduous task, but people need more to play wtih than just carbuncle and the spirits (which drain more mp than other summons, stupid..) and summons that can actually fill different rolls before you get the GOOD stuff...

                Help with avatar battles

I for one would like to get help doing avatar summons early on. The only class I truly want to play is summoner, so levelling up another class to 60 is a huge time investment and not a very big reward.

I understand that a level 30 on the avatar quests is useless, which is why I'm offering gil (25k for the PT) to anyone 65+ who is willing to help me get a summon. Is that so bad?

If anyone can help me, I would be more than obliged - send me a tell. I have the Titan and Shiva quests open.

there is no way anyone under Lv 55 can survive and be of use in the battle.
Wanna bet? I went to Ifrits cauldron with a 74 RDM to kill Ifrit. She got him down to 30% before we both died - my heals helped her out QUITE a bit, and she prolly could have survived if she subbed WAR instead of BLM.

That's right. Just me, and a RDM. No one else.

We were both benefitting - she wanted to do it for the thrill, and I would have an avatar. We'll try again tomorrow most likely.

BTW, it wasn't difficult getting to Ifrit. It's called Silent Oil and Prism Powder, even a level 20 could get there with a choco and an airship pass.

How many oils and prism powder did you use getting there?
I have never used these items before since I sneak/invis around using the whm spells, is the duration on them random alot?

Noone has talked about this, but if you die I guess you would want reraise on and resurrect (if you died )before the avatar dies to get credit for it?

I am working on getting to 41whm so I have Cure IV and will see how it goes against leviathan and garuda (the 2 i want most) with some friends in their low to mid 60s soon.
Playing WHM to a higher level will be alot nicer with those 2 avatars (mainly garuda so I could use it for blinkga at 50whm/25smn).

I know taru nin/whm can solo avatars by blink tanking them . RDM can solo some avatars as well, but its not always a sure thing.

A RDM in my friend's LS soloed Garuda with no problem, and my friend almost did Ifrit - like I said, just needed a different sub.

Personally, for running through Ifrit's Cauldron and knowing where to go, I used 2 silent oils and 3 prism powders - i brought a stack anyway. You can't cast sneak/invis there cause the mobs detect magic.

I also brought a scroll of instant reraise, and instant warp - I get reraise next level =P I used neither, will just try Ifrit again in the next day or so. Nor should you need to if you win - even with chain casting Cure 3, I never got agro off the RDM (who did use blink) till after she died. Ifrit missed me like 4 times though, before one-shotting me for 489, which was pretty funny

Yeah I assume there are lots of bomb monsters there that can sense you casting, thus the need to stick with the potions only.
I assume you used the directions to the cloister areas that are on the shadow dragons forums?
Sounds like an interesting battle, maybe i should sub ninja for utsusemi in case the avatar wants to one shot me

I used the maps, and person who wrote them up was the one who came with me to try and kill Ifrit =)

Hmm, I'm in the process of actually doing the quest -- I'm BST for now. Too bad I don't know anyone higher level to give me hand (like, 75, dunno anyone up there) ...its a shame, SMN got so shafted Anyway, wish I could get some help, but then again, you also need hero status in the town to even fight the avatar

I, for one, will be looking for help against the summons. I have one more rank lvl to go, then i will be able to access the Ramuh and ifrit quests. I would provide my own instant re-raise, my own prism powders and silent oil. I plan on getting help progressively, so once i have ramuh, ill play wiht him a little, then ill get ifrit, and lvl up some more, then go to sandoria and raise fame there, get those avatars, etc. I want to play the summoner as it should be: a job that progresses like any other. i dont all the summons NOW, that would be very boring, but i wished they were each accessable by the summoner at lvl increments. that makes the most sense.
