  • Whats so wicked about a sam??

Hey, i am just about to start playing FFXI, in about 5 days, and im thinking of being a sam or ninja for my advanced job, and i was wondering what the deal with sam and ninja are, like what are they good for, and what makes them so good people want to choose them, oh and some cool pics of them would be nice aswell. THanks Everyone!!!

SAM - Damage dealer. One of the weakest damage dealers, however they get TP abilities and traits which allows for faster TP building and more weaponskills.

NIN - Argueably the best tank, and argueably the most expensive class. Not a wise class to make unless you already have a steady flow of income (high crafting, high level job, ect.) or if you're prepared to farm every few levels.

your SAM description is a bit off. SAM's role is to be the secondary Damage Dealer, their power isnt on their damage output itself, but the versatility they add to the group. With a SAM you can do at least 2 strong renkeis per battle, which means more damage overall. Say that SAM is the weakess class isnt quite right, they add a lot more to the overall damage of the party if imployed right, specially with a good BLM.

cool thx guys, i think i'll ever be sam or a black amge, the only thing i dont like about b mages is that the only advanced job they can really be is summoner, and everyone sais summoners suck unless u have all summons, and u need like a party of seventies to do it, but still im not sure yet, i first wanted to be a whm mage, then black mage, then thief, then warrior, and then samurai, and then ninja, and the summoner, i cant make up my mind :spin:

You're right Lan'Urk, I meant to say base damage is lower then the other DD's.

My biggest suggestion is to level up each job that you find interesting. I change jobs normally every one or two weeks because no real job appeals to me. Though costly and some-what waisting time (if I spent all this time leveling one job, I'd probably be 60+ instead of my highest only 47), it's a lot better to find the funnest job for you.

And at the same time, it's great because you'll have a lot of jobs ready for a sub incase a party asks you to change.

There are new level 20 summon quests, But if you want to be a summoner you really should level whm not blm.

              BLM ~> 18
              WHM ~> 37
              SMN ~> 75~

Just to tell ya, the 20 SMN battles are much more challenging than you would think. I would think you would need around 20k worth of ethers, drinks, etc. to get you through one avatar, if not more money.

Another Adv.Job mage can undertake, especially WHM, is BRD.

Also you don't get the whispers needed for Fenrir.

lol dont listen to lanurk....HES A COMPLETE NOOB!....haha just kidding, lan man whats up! i didnt know you posted in these forums...pretty cool.......you need to lvl up..>< =P anyway regarding the sam nin question, lan is right, its al about the renkei, and as for ninja personally i find them to be the best, less healing, equals less down time, equals steady and often times fast xp.

Another thing to consider is... your icon is a taru picture. As a taru blm (or any other race blm) you'll find a party quite quickly. Taru make great mages. However they make um.... I think the guidebook says 'challenging' melee characters. Not to say it's not possible, but you'll face a bit of discrimination as a taru melee.

Either way, try a few things once you start the game and see what appeals to you, then stick with it for a bit. You can always add to your character and try new things. And, levelling up goes a lot quicker once you've been through it once... levelling subjob or levelling advanced job goes much smoother since you know how the game works.

Why would you get the guide book it's probably the most innaccurate piece of trash ive seen in a long time. And taru sams are good last time i checked theres a 75 taru taru samurai on cerebrus and hes enjoying himself.

Not trying to start a "OMFG WTF I CAN OUTDMG YOU" thread. But, Samurai is actually on the higher part of the list in tems of damage. Not Ranger Damage, not Drk in pimped out 4mil eq Damage, but you equip your Samurai right, and you can out dmg any of the other melee DDs

the only other jobs SAM can come close with in DoT and WS damage would probaly be a DRG, since MNK-DRK-RNG-WAR all out damage a SAM. I have no clue about THF since most jobs do more DoT and WS dmg then them after 66. The only problem with sam is they dont get their light WS renkei till 71 and Spin and DDK are still stronger. But hell you can make a light renkei by yourself every 2 hours..if that counts.

War? Every war I've ever played with either did similar, or lower damage. I also take into account WS damage. At the end of the PT, the Samurai has done at least twice as many WS's as somone else. Same thing with monk. Only time I can see them outclassing me is in ranps tomb. I've hit quite a few Gekko's for 700+. I have never seen a DRG, MNK or WAR do this. Only at 70, so maybe the quest WS for the other jobs are stronger. But, currently like I said, with my gear I've out-dmged those above jobs :spin:

Have you been in a PT where a WAR wasnt tanking? They can come close to the DoT of a DRK and their 71 WS also makes a light WS like mistral but its a bit stronger. Gekko is not a strong WS, never seen kasha in a PT but from what ive seen it on it doesnt seem to powerfull. MNK will out damage you on almost anything but jellys. You can pull off a few more WS but they arnt that strong so it doesnt matter much. SAM is really more of a support melee, to help create a strong chain. WAR does that also but has more DoT and stronger WS.
