  • Sam/war Vs War/sam

First i wanna start off saying i love samurai, just hit level 31 and its so fun.But im heading toward "the line" once i pass level 37 its like ive commited to the job.Yet,im kind of missing warrior and my g. axe.I know alot about both jobs, their roles at higher levels ect. However i was wondering a few things.

First off which combo has the longest peak usefulness, ive seen several post around here saying samurai lose some of their usefulness around level 65+due to not being able to make an easy level 3 renkei

Second,i hate to ask this, which one does the most damage overall if their both say mithkabobed and berserked? Ive hearded incredibly varied damage numbers on the higher G. Katana WS's

Third which one would get the most invites,i love samurai but sadly i dont have enough free time to play a job that rarely gets groups :dead:

    ok thats about it thanks

Pure speculation, but looking at the sheer number of high level wars on my server compared to sam, I'd say that war is more more useful in the long run since they can do damage with sam sub, tank with nin sub, or both with mnk sub (Focus + Rampage is pretty impressive in ITs). War not beling limited to 1 "A" ranked weapon helps, plus they get the same B- rating in spears and other weapons, not to mention the inherent ability to obtain most of the good WS without a special sub to get them. The greataxe break WS are very useful as well for support.

Sam just does skillchains, and about the same normal damage. They almost never tank, and make a bad target for fuidama with only 3rd eye to help with the mediocre armor. In a funny, way, they are highly specialized in what they do, which is non-specialization of WSs. If a PT doesn't need the WS versatility, I dont see why they would put up with the lower damage output (compared to mnk, drk, drg, etc) and the limited role of a sam.

On just pure damage between the two, I'd say sam has the edge just because of greater # of WS, chains, and MB that follow it. I have not noticed either hitting harder or more often with the buff-ups on normal attacks, except crabs where the 2h axe is good against.

As for invites, at low levels, war has this unshakable noob stigma attached to it, so I imagine it would be very hard to get a PT early on. Sam has the opposite with its cool factor and reaches it's full damage dealing capacity earlier on. Later on though, I don't see many sam at all, and the ones that are there, often seek for a long time. I do see many wars, yet it's hard to snag one since they all seem to be snapped up really quick, either from lack of tanks, people wanting the break abilities (due to lack of a brd in PT), or because they are very compatible with a certain class (like drk). I suppose the fact that nearly all the high level wars are jpn with really expensive equips helps them get into PTs quick compared to the new flood of NA release FFXI sam players with only adequate equips and experience.

Honestly, I think war/mnk to 60 then war/sam would be best for you. I think you'll find it more enjoyable than sam/war.

awww this makes me not want to go SAM hearing a WAR/SAM is>SAM/WAR.
          if so why be SAM..
Im a lvl 20 WAR/MNK and was planing on going SAM. Would SAM/THF be more effective then SAM/WAR?I doubt it but i dont want to be a gimped WAR ><. Also WAR af is so gay compared to SAM AF. I was thinking of becoming either a DRG,SAM,NIN or full WAR so i would be better off as a full fledged WAR?

The problem is that samurai aren't a viable main-class post-60. You're a second rate damage class at best, you can't tank and your lead in TP generation has slipped away to nothing. All you really have to offer is weapon-skill versatility but that's a token bonus that won’t net you any invites.

Maybe Square-Enix will get around to looking over samurai, and for that matter all the expansion classes, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. I'm just warning you that if you intend to play to the higher levels you will be unhappy with samurai. If war/sam and sam/war are the combinations you're considering, go with war/sam. You'll be much happier in the end.

I wholly agree with Kyoujin. And please no responses saying SaMurAi is MaDZ fun i Am lewvwl 17 and it RAWKs i can do 9 whole WSs befOrethe OthEr GuyY caN EveN do oNe.

While other melees have varying degrees of viability on both exping and "other" e.g. BCNM, HNMs, etc, sam is the only one that blows on both. Versitility on weapon skills means absolute jack later on. For example, if you want someone to go with Dancing Edge for distortion, you can take Samurai's Enpi, or Rangers Sidewinder. HMMMMM. Even if you're versatile, it's because you can create renkeis with such great WS's like HOBAKU AND GOTEN. AWESOME DAMAGE YES?~~~ I could go on and on about balance issues. And if you only want to be samurai because it looks cool, we have the most dull weapon skills in the game even including Yukikaze. How is that possible when Samurai is supposedly the master of weapon skills?! Samurai needs hardcore tweaking. Hardcore.

Getting TP fast, in theory at least because rangers sure get TP faster than me along with several other jobs, is pointless when parties later on are so molded to the same things where most of the time there's always 'room' for two real melees. so basically the party can get two uber damage dealers that renkei the same time, or you, who gets it so fast but has to wait for forever, and then your 300% WS does like 20 more damage than your 100%, wtf

Have fun late game when everyone's doing cool things like avatars, oh wait, melee is useless, especially gimp melee like you. Or Hnms, where your renkei setting up expertise will, wait, that's pointless too. What use do samurais have, seriously?

It's not that samurai is so unique that they appear so low in /seas, or that the job is so hard. It's because people quit playing them when they find out everything.
