I have a level 30 warrior as of now (using 2h sword). I started my samarai quest and was wondering whether i should use katana or polearm. i dont want to start off with katana then switch to polearm and waste all those points when i could be perfecting one class. vice versa.

I'm still on my way to the point you're at, so all I can post is what I hear and have surmised by studying up on this job.
First off, have you been working on polearm already? It's a weapon skill that warriors can learn; I'm working on it right now, trying to get it to 150 by the time I get samurai opened up. In any event, it seems that polearm might actually be a better weapon choice for a samurai because of the WS it gives you at Combat Skill level 150: Penta Thrust: a five-hit weapon skill that in the hands of a samurai creates almost enough TP while going off to go right back into another WS! That's real renkei-making power.^^
But, personally, I don't know have anyone who finally opens up samurai could resists Great Katana. I plan to work on both, though I'm hoping to have polearm up so high that I don't even need to use it to raise WS when I get to samurai, or at least, not for a really long time. Rather, when in pt's or when renkei's are planned out, I'll have polearm equipped, but when I solo or when in small pt's, I'll use Great Katana. We'll see, I guess.^^
Hope this helps a bit!I will be an honorable samurai... someday!

You still need to be Level 50 or something Samurai to use Petha thrust, so it really doesn't matter if you are a level 30 warrior with capped polearm skill.
Just work on both, it takes about 10 min to cap each GK or PLM skill for your level anyways.
I started Samurai with 0 in both and at level 23 they are always capped 10 minutes after I get a new level.35 Sam/53 Thf/25 PLD/25 War/6 Mnk/1 Drk

Great link, Wombat Woo.
Reading that short but ultra-informative thread was really helpul. Thanks!^^
I guess my plan isn't all that far off from what some experienced players have already learned: train both, polearm while a warrior (since you can), and then great katana as a samurai.
I have a question of my own related to this topic, if you (Wombat Woo) or anyone else can answer or point me to the answer I'd really appreciate it:
I've heard/seen it mentioned that people "don't know" about higher level weapon skills, so my question is: ARE there more weapon skills than those listed in the Brady Guide, weapon skills beyond 150 combat skill points? If so, where can I learn more about them?
Thank-you, in advance, to any and all who can help me. Like the creator of this topic, I am a warrior who plans to be a samurai someday (though the topic-creator is much closer than me^^) and I love to read up on stuff like this.I will be an honorable samurai... someday!

Thank-you, Wombat Woo.
The topic about 2H-Katana WS was interesting, but seemed to end without resolution as to whether or not there was a sweet multi-hit ws available at 250 points. Of course, it also sounds like it's a moot poot since 250 points isn't achievable under the current level cap. Gyah, hate to sound so technical about a game I tend to just try to enjoy, but you know! It's cool to know this stuff.^^
The WS chart is awesome, btw. I saved it to my hd and will print for future use. Cheers.
Almost sounds to me from all these threads that the Penta Thrust is great because it hits five times and builds tp as it goes, but that g.katana ws' hit less but for more impact. Sounds like a balancing act. Perhaps use katanas to build tp and do lots of regular damage then switch to polearm for a future battle when you plan to release one or more ws.
I guess I'll figure it out when I get there and experiment on my own, but I also appreciate your helpful links. Arigato.I will be an honorable samurai... someday!

Perhaps use katanas to build tp and do lots of regular damage then switch to polearm for a future battle when you plan to release one or more ws.
Unfortunately, equipping a different weapon will kill your built-up TP. Getting 300% TP and then equipping something else will just drop your TP back to 0%.

Thanks for the info, Yupa. I guess I should have known that.^^
It's amazing, this game. I've learned so much this last month+ yet there's so much still to learn.
Btw, are you the same Yupa that sometimes posts answers when tazirai's away (in taz' GF rdm topic)? If so, I am very appreciative of your advice there. I was considering rdm for a while, and I found you and tazirai's posts quite helpful.^^I will be an honorable samurai... someday!
