• little soloing advices and my thoughts~

Please note, this thread is just random thoughts of adivce to new rdm's or insecure rdm's

I am only a Lv 66 Rdm, but I love this job, its kept me going in the game, I love the fact for soloing. I consider myself a good red mage, based on comments, both NA & JP. But honestly I give my 110% in parties, BUT the REAL deal I play is for soloing mobs that other jobs, cannot do properly or at all.
Anyways I hope some of these advice helps you become a better soloer.

Most important: Keep your enfeeble capped, and enhancing as close to cap as possible. This will affect your overall preformance.

Crabs are your friends. there easy & ugly yet cute, and have lotsa mp. they make it easy to learn basics.

if you can level paladin or ninja, you will learn spell timing, when to cast, if you play it enough, you will get a basic feeling on when not to cast if its paralyzed. for me, timing is critical to a easy smooth fight. honestly, you brain is a complex machine, wich can calculate %. It only needs practice to give you a more accurate % if its going to hit you or not.
Also PLD is especially nice for shield & parry skills, and either way you would want nin 37 for end game soloing ^^.

Learn your spells, what they do, and use them efficiently to be as mana conservative as possible.

Never be afraid of sleep 2 if you can sleep it, nothing wrong with sleeping a mob. The choice is yours lose 3.5k~ xp later on, or sleep 2, /laugh motion /slap <t> /heal.
Just make sure you know what your mob, and how effective you are. Personally, i would sleep1->sleep 2 on a tough VT, or when i know this is not a hard to sleep->2 as well. In general Sleep 2 is fine, i do so, but for starters do sleep1->sleep 2, when your timing is good sleep 2 only. Build your timing :p

Practice practice practice. I've soloed half a level in the mid 50's just practicing. My first practice was ironshells in my 30's no refresh in Sea serpent grotto. My biggest achievement pre 60 was problably manticores @ lv 50-52 in front of kuftal tunnel, both ninja sub & blm sub. I dont know if others would consider it harder than general for that level, but i personally find it was harder than it's i fight. The timing was impecable ; ;. but i recommend fighting them for real good practice. its fun to watch lvl 55-75's cheering you on, and saying good job.

Encouragment are good. be happy if you get them. I really like to when some of my ls members praise me ^^.

60-62 start helping people with various AF keys, make sure mobs con EM-tough in this case for a smooth practice. This way you will play with a variaty of mobs, other than same thing you practice on. Also AF2 mobs are good practice here. they add some oomf :p

Learn mobs, there lvl, the abilities

Lil note on NM's: just because a certain NM takes 3~6ppls dont be intimidated. just find out its ability and see how you can counter, study your prey.

TWO LAST NOTES~

Read forums on other people tips! WATCH APPLE PIE STUFF apple pie threads, he gave the community so many tips and advice. Thank you apple pie :D

High LV RDM Abuse, there ARE some RDM 60-75's that will be like rdm cant do this and that, etc.. its incredible how much in denial they are. There is no standard way for soloing, they have no rights to tell you how. I still know many people who dont believe they can solo minimum a tough crab -.-;.

Anyways i wrote this because I was bored @ work :p.

XXX has lost venemous claw T.T

When do you think is a realistic time to solo GK2 NMs? Is it ever possible? Vana'Diel Monsters has them listed as level 58... specifically the coeurl. :D

I have a real burning passionate desire for revenge on that coeurl from my first GK2 run as RNG... He bursted me right when I got hate from a Slug Shot, as I lost an utsu cast to paralyze, and I got oneshotted after my hp was down from the thundaga spam.

I'm guessing having a side person with paralyna would help on the Coeurl?

Also, a more general question: when soloing, do you swap gears like you do for XP PT? So far, it feels like I almost don't have to bother with equipping +MND gear for Paralyze or Slow (never mind losing tp with elemental staves) or +INT for Blind and such, when going up against EM-T mobs. I'm only level 50 RDM, but I'm guessing switching to staves is a no-no?

GK2 & Solo switch weapons

Genkai 2 mobs, if thats what i assume by GK2, They may be rated as 58, but on there difficulty level I think they are rated more difficult than a ordinary NM. I dont know how much they hit me for. Ancient magic is pretty easy to counter on the other hand.
If I went in with the information you gave me, I would bring echo drops defintly.

[l]I'm guessing having a side person with paralyna would help on the Coeurl?[/l]
The only major problem I would see is mostly his paralyze. Usually coeurl NM or BC type tend to have extremly powerful paralyze. where you get multiple paralyze in a row.

A Interesting note is, recently they added new BCNM's and one of them is a coeurl, I have tanked it without much problem (only difference is he has also petrify, the only reason we had so much trouble, we didnt know and didnt have a whm, this was the day of the new BC release) So I would assume he is the same. The only advantage is were not capped against this mob. But I think with the incredibly high amount of HP GK2 mobs have, it would be wise to have Ni. but thats me. I will try this mob pherhaps this week just to see and post.

I dunno really. this mob is really a good question. I remmeber doing slugshot->barrage->EES->slugshot on these mobs and only to find myself hardly denting it, so I am kinda weary about this on (This is as Rng 57, full barrage hit creating a self SC with silver bullets)

about whm sub for paralyna in case ppls wonder, i doubt it would work properly, but I may be wrong. but i just remember these effects from coeurl. Now maybe if we are high enough to evade..

xxx is paralyzed like 5~6time in a row

[l]Also, a more general question: when soloing, do you swap gears like you do for XP PT? So far, it feels like I almost don't have to bother with equipping +MND gear for Paralyze or Slow (never mind losing tp with elemental staves) or +INT for Blind and such, when going up against EM-T mobs. XP PT = I am invisible.

Solo wise. I would switch my neck piece and rings commonly, all macroed of course. I would never change my main weapon. Due to fact TP Loss can be critical. There is only one reason i would ever change my weapon is when I want to keep my mana full with Energy Drain for the fun on a MP mob. But switching to a staff is defintly not worth it I find while in battle. We have na~da for staff skills. If its a EM-T mob your spells should be able to stick with any problem(unless its a elemental that is strong versus that element of enfeeble).

My general rule to myself is dont switch out tp items aka: weapon & bow(I use lightning bow +1 for the dex bonus, just looks nice :D) so neck, fingers belt, back is pretty much what I let switch in and out. I use same macro's as PT based macro's the way i counter the staff changing problem is simple, I bazaar my items for 99,999,999. Everyone who seen me on my server and checked my bazaar, knows about my {Rain} {Bow} collection. what they dont know is I leave it there when I dont party so it doesnt switch in if I am soloing.

Ahhh gtg, heeeeeee is calling me to play :p

when soloing is keeping your sword skill up to date required? or do most people just solo doing nuke, sleep nuke?

I am always capped or 2~3 away from cap(if i just lvled) so yes its highly recommended, every point of sword skill is good for you. espcially since it adds accuracy. Sleep nuke Sleep nuke is easy. as it has been stated anything that can be slept without big trouble, is a pretty much not a threat to us.

I personally like being face to face when fighting. but there ARE mobs that it wont work, and we need to resort to sleep nuke sleep nuke.

Personally for solo play and lasting ability out of the subs I've messed with I prefer /war by far.

RDM don't kill fast, we are in fact very slow soloer's when dealing with even/tough. To take that mind set further I thought /war would be great.

With my defensive gears on as an Evlaan 63rdm/27war (54+9 VIT & 336 Defense with protect IV) it's pretty easy to solo tough monsters. MP isn't something you need a lot of... you just need Refresh, phalanx and SS and your recasts for phalanx and SS shouldn't ever put you in the hole with Refresh doing it's thing.

Your lasting power in a defense mode like this is increased by far. Attacks that normally did 45dmg to you with phalanx on now only do ~35dmg with phalanx on. This increase in Defense/VIT will allow your SS to last longer, special attacks do a significant amount less dmg even without SS up... and if things start to hurt a bit too much... you can always defender taking things even more in the direction of 'slower is better' as your dmg by sword will be lowered but the dmg you take is quite a bit less.

I haven't played with my rdm/war combo since having a bit better defensive gears and the change on food... but my best for defense was 64VIT and 501 Defense + phalanx + Stoneskin as a 62rdm/25war before the change to food using fish mithkabobs, Defender and Protect III. With stats like this Tough monsters aren't that hard to take down at all... they just take a lot longer by blade of sword due to the lowering of your attack... and nukes are out of the question with /war sub as an Elvaan.

I'm positive the 'best' tactics anyone 'could' use for any given monster rely heavily on your racial choice and sub job... but this one tactic has taken the cake for me.

Note: if the monster you fight is heavy on magic... this tactic doesn't work too well unless you can silence them (if you're fighting even/tough you should be able to silence them in most cases) because their magic attacks don't care about your Defender or 501 Defense hehe

I've gone up there and half-assed this a couple times in the last week... I have come very close but I won't let this fight get anywhere near a loss before I warp (it's not like anyone is even gettin Genkai 2 yet...) I think it's very doable but I insist on subbing /BLM because I really don't feel like losing XP if I get stuck in a bad spot.

I am certain I could duo them (more like 1.1 people) if I just had a WHM to stand there and Silena/Paralyna me instead of me doing it myself. What ends up happening is you spend way too much time spamming debuffs (everything sticks but silence) and re-buffing youself...you are casting so many spells you don't swing your sword much.

The Courel will cast Burst or Thundaga 2 roughly every 20-45 seconds typically. In my experience, Thundaga 2 hits MUCH harder than Burst. I probably see Burst 6-7 times per solo attempt, and it has not broken Stoneskin even once. However, Thundaga2 has only *not* broken Stoneskin once. At minimum it's done about 10 dmg past Stoneskin, maximum was like ~275 above Stoneskin. I would say the Burst:Thundaga2 ratio is about 2:1

Edit: (Hmmm...) Considering going up there with Misericorde for quick hits in-between spells and using Energy Steal/Energy Drain instead of a dmg WS every couple rounds. Hmmm, definately something to think about.

personally i still havent soloed with a mage sub.. if i was gonna use one though, itd be /smn for boosted mp and balanced int/mnd as well as autorefresh

your main spells as rdm are what youll be using to solo, things like phalanx, stoneskin, blink, all your debuffs, haste, enspells, bar's if you use them, aquaviel, etc... so if im gonna solo, i want more mp to do it with, and blanced mnd/int for better debuffs and a slightly better stoneskin.. those are my thoughts anyways.. of course you lose things like drain/aspir/warp, seals, w/e else there is that you can lose

so far ive soloed with /war (gimped slightly) and /thf... /thf was by far more useful because of evasion bonus (i just tried to use the auto translat and almost posted this half way through >.< stupid ffxi habbits), also flee is handy if you get in trouble, and if you WANT to, you can sleepII every minute, disengage, walk behind it, SA, engage, and get a critical.. not really 'economical' but its a deff crit, and if you use with like viperbite or fast blade.. its more damaging... also, the dex bonus and agi bonuses youll get (especially for me as a mithra anyways) help crits and parry/shield blocks alot

dunno, im not really sure about the soloing anything beyond Tough, and even that takes about 15+ minutes to do, depending on style, thats with me fully debuffing, enhancing, and just pecking away with my sword+enspell

also, i dont change rings/armor.. since even with /thf my int is higher, i put on one int ring, one mind rng, my moldavite earring and (soon) wizards.. ill replace those with dodge earrings or something soon, also for mp/mnd i use a holy phial... aside from that i really dont do anything 'special' and i get to solo EM crabs just fine.. just takes time

finally, as for G2 mobs.. they still petrifie me.. so i have NO idea bout fighting them

rdm/rng

RDM/RNG Vs boreal sounds fun versus it , since with blm sub i didnt take a huge dmg hit (50~70, without any buffs, or food) i can it working real well on sidewinder. Anyways i am intrested to see your video as well,

A fun note, lvl 58 rng of mine missed sidewinder 4 times in a row on TWTBW 2 weeks ago.. in east sara area >.<

Anyways time to go make some Carre Rice

Oh ya, I decided to add this when I get my mobs down to 1% life before I kill them in a macro pallette

/em Cancho's <t> to death

I just finished editing a movie and it was been uploaded here.
http://www5.sppd.ne.jp/grendal/FF11/genkai2_hound.wmv
(WMV9, 68.2MB, 1,000kbps)

As expected, it wasn't hard for RDM75 to beat him but I was busy in casting spells, especially dispel on Icespikes.

What's important there was, I think, not to drop Barblizzard and Barparalyze. They perfectly protected me from the paralysis effect of Howling. I had total [ICE] +121 with Barblizzard, Feral Trousers and Ice Shield. I was hit by both Blizzaga II and Freeze several times but only took 0 point of damage because of Stoneskin and those.

Here're some statistics.
