Ok, How hard do RDM hit normally?, I'm not saying RDM should be a melee class, I'm just wondering how hard they hit, thanks.

I sometimes melee as a RDM in a party. I have a macro that switches my gear, and when I attack I switch to melee gear. STR, DEX, and ATT. It can be fun if you know your job well and you know that it is appropriate given the circumstances (ie: not to do it as a rule).
Don't forget that we have B for our sword rating, which is almost the same a Warrior gets for Sword, G.Sword, etc. So you are not horrible at but actualy decent.
Now about the damage being less that a PLD, I am not sure. I sometimes hit the same amount as a PLD. Not a rule that I hit less, but it does happen.Modnar

43 Monk; 25 Warrior; 20 Theif; 10 Dragoon; 11 Dark Knight; 7 Ninja.
Mage:
55 Red Mage; 32 Black Mage; 27 White Mage.

DRK, PLD and WAR are able to have access to some of swords with higher base damage and DPF (damage per frame) that we, RDMs, are not. Therefore, it is obvious that they outdamage us.
Basically in XP PT, we usually eat INT/MND+ foods while attackers eat atk+ ones. PLD eats def+ foods and PLD50+/WAR25+ uses Defender. That's why it looks as if we did the same as PLD did. However, take a look at them when you go farming. They farm too weak mobs about 1.5 times as fast as we do due to better weapons and stronger WS such as Vorpal and Swift Blade.
WAR has exactly the same skill for sword but when they are working as attackers, they use Aggressor, Berserk and Warcry. 95% of RDMs in XP PT sub either BLM or WHM and we don't have access to those JAs. What is more, WAR has some nice gears that boost both accuracy and attack like Haubergeron (Accuracy +10, Attack +10). Except for Assault Jerkin (Accuracy +3, Attack +18) and Enhancing Sword (Accuracy +8, Attack +16), we have nothing like that. If we concentrate on accuracy, we aren't able to get enough attack and vice versa.
Therefore, we're behind PLD and WAR whatever sub jobs we choose. Well, don't be disappointed. We have some nice tools to make up for the gap.

at lvl 49 i was watching the 2 sword weilding rdm hitting in the mid teens in garliage citidel (sp?) most those times he was either missing with one, an sometimes both. as i was hitting in the high 20's, low 30's.
as a rule i dont care if they melee with me, when they just want to cap there sword. otherwise id rather have them in the back keeping everyone refreshed, the mob debuffed, an dispelled, an add a secondary nuke/cure when needed.
i seen alot do the melee an fall behind on the other stuff. sadly i havent seen a super rdm yet, who can handle everything all at once,

Nin75, Bst75. Drk61, War61, Rdm40, All other jobs are 37. All 3 starting city missions completed. All Zilart missions completed. All CoP missions completed. TouA completed.

He's right though. MY DRG is 53 and my RDM 57. When I'm farming in similar areas my Wyvern hits for about 70 damage, my RDM hits for about 50. In exp parties it probably about 20-30 vs ~10.Originally posted by modnar

Yeah we don't hit the base damage as much as a WAR or DRK, but a WAR or DRK cant add Damage Spikes to himself, add Elemental Damage to his swords, Haste himself, Cure himself, SLeep links, Reduce damage taken to him to 0, Enfeeble the enemy, etc....

I have macros that do me a lot of good, I jump in and out of Melee during 1 fight. I engage and disengage as needed even if the mob is not dead. (Just because I started hitting it does not mean I stay there until it is dead).
I noticed with RDM, you act the best when you don't lean only in 1 direction. Some people that melee forget their other duties because they feel trapped and don't disengage when they need to.
For me, when I draw my sword it is like me casting a spell: do it, get done with it and do the next one. All in the loop of duties that need to be done.
Be wise with what you do and ensure you are doing the best for the party's interest. That is what being dynamic is all about.Modnar

I haven't partied with an RDM who was able to melee well, but if modnar has a way that allows him/her to melee it can work, just note modnar isn't full time battle mage but does focus on the RDM role primarily-dynamic versatility.
So many things in this games are entirely situational that RDM will never have to melee 100% or not be allowed to melee, as for every occasion there's an exception.There is no knowledge without experience.
