  • RDM AF, Castle Oztroja

I have been searching out my coffer keys and coffers for a few levels, but have also died a lot from dropped sneak / invis in terrible situations. The room with the statue in it with the 1 coffer, is it recommended that I stay in this room looking for the coffer, waiting for it to spawn? or is running around the best bet? I would like to get this before i log off tonight, and am willing to stay up for a LOOOONG time, but am wondering if it is a waste of time to just camp one coffer and hope it spawns here.

Well one night I got a Coffer Key via a skill up PT, and one of my friends happened to be in that PT. Anyway he was killing Yags in a hallway for like 2 hours after the PT ended to help me just in case I lost invis and died for some reason. After he left I ran down the long hallway one more time and there it was! When I dropped invis I aggro'd Yag, but by a BIG stroke of luck, there was a WAR nearby who voked it off me...

So if I were you I'd wonder, but have some help just in case...

      Depends on your luck.

I parked myself in the statue room and started reading a book.

After a while later, I was close to finishing the book and the coffer had not spawned.

A LS friend happened to be in the castle doing other stuff, so I paid him to snoop around. Lo and behold, he found it. I ran out and got it =P.

My experience with Oztroja was very out of the ordinary, but let me offer some insight.

Thieves constantly camp out Oztroja coffers, since they can earn astral rings.

Thieves who pick locks, will sometimes cause the chest to become a mimic which will attack them.

Mimics always drop coffer keys. 100% drop rate.

If you offer the thieves in Oz gil, I paid 20k for mine, you may be able to convince them to let you join their party, and get the key off the inevitable mimic.

Once you have your key, you can camp or wander around for your coffer.

My story is pretty simple. I spent 4 hours in a skill up party in Oz, saw 1 key drop, and I lost the lot. Came back a few days later, shouted to hire a thief, got my key in under 10 minutes, got my coffer 15 after that in the statue room. It was incredibly awesome. I look at it as payback for the fact it took me 80 hours to get my Eldieme key. :dead:

Ah, so you worldshifted also Ruic.^-^

My advice on the Oztroja Coffer is to search Oz very often. If there are only a couple of THF there, you are in the money. Either you can offer them money to give you the coffer (20K seems reasonable, as it's more than the coffer is worth unless there is an Astral, which is not very likely, though THF are often notoriously greedy...).

Or you can do what I did: Run up and down, passing each spawn as you go and just waiting to get lucky. I picked a weekday night, one of the times with the lowest population during the week on my old server and just ran around for three hours. I enlisted the help of some THF, asking them to tell me if they got the coffer so I wouldn't waste time while it was respawning.

I think your biggest problem is this:

"I have been searching out my coffer keys and coffers for a few levels, but have also died a lot from dropped sneak / invis in terrible situations."

You don't need Sneak. You should never have problems keeping Invis up in this area of Oztroja, and if you're worried about being able to Refresh yourself occassionally, bring a couple of Hi-Ethers. Just avoid the Yagudo Parasites in the fountain room and you'll be fine. If it spawns in their spot, Sneak up for it and go, but otherwise you won't need Sneak at all.^^
          There will be cake.

Like it has already been suggested try to go during non peak hours to get your coffer. If your lvl 58+ I suggest you sub blm while you hunt if you arent already. Chainspell and escape will save you a lot of trouble if you do get aggro.

Not to be negative, but my experience with Oztroja was a less than plesant one.

First off, it took me 3 consecitive nights of coffer/skillup parties to get a key. I lotted horribly every time a key dropped, although, luckily I lotted well when we got Tornado from Yagudo Prelates... ching- 50k each.

On the 3rd night, there were only 2 of us that needed a key, myself and a BRD. After a while we get a drop. I lose (of course) {congratulations} to BRD... blah, blah... so basically, it was just me who needed key... aka I could not lose this one. Finally one dropped and the agony was over. No sooner did I get the key, the lvl 67 WHM in the group said Treasure Coffer sighted! And it was in the statue room. I was not paying attention, and the BRD was already in the room opening the coffer by the time I realized it was there.

The next 18 hours were pure hell.... on the advice of the higher level members of the party, I set up camp in the Statue room. There were 2 THF there when I arrived (one looking for astral, the other for THF AF) so I presumed I'd have to compete with them, and I formed a macro to trade coffer key. Eventually these 2 THF left and started roaming around. I kid you not... I started camping this room at around 12:00 midnight, and stayed up until 5:00am, with no spawn. Several times I debated leaving to explore, but knew I couldnt get back in if I left. I kept in communication with one of the THF's and she told me she got her coffer... again {congrats} blah, blah...

I decided to call it quits at 5:00am as stated, and retired to bed. I got some sleep, but ultimately I couldnt stop obsessing with finding that damn coffer. I got up early (considering when I went to bed... this was a Friday night btw, so no work in morning) Saturday morning and logged back in ~hoping~ the coffer would magically be there. Hell, no. After a while I got a /tell from a PLD friend who needed help with his coffer key in Beadeaux. I explained my situation, but he was desperate for help, so I agreed. Of course, when I arrived at Beadeaux, he had himself a nice sized alliance of level 70 ppl that happend to be skilling up, so he didnt need me afterall. I stayed a while, keys were dropping like rain. I think almost everyone in the alliance got one, including the 3 ppl who needed it.

For this huge inconvenience, I requested payback. He was glad to comply after receiving his shiny new Gallant Leggings. His job would be to camp the Statue room for me and A) let me know if coffer spawned, and B) let me in if it did. There was another RDM camping that room, so I had virtually no chance of claiming that coffer, but at the very least, if it did spawn there, I would know when and that eased my mind, so I could freely explore the rest of the spawns, knowing I had eyes inside that room. After wandering the castle for about 30 mins, I finally saw that wonderful, magical green lettering on my target Treasure Coffer at the very bottom spawn, in the hall after the 4-lever door.

I ran toward it, but after all that has happened luck-wise, I figured some thf would snatch it from under my nose while I fiddled to get my invis off and ready my macro. Luck would be with me this time, as I opened it, and heard that wonderful sound. Tabard was mine.

Sorry for the longwinded story, but I wanted to convey the frustration and agony SE puts people through to obtain a simple piece of equipment. Actually its more like bad design, putting our Warlocks Tabard in the same coffers as astral rings. Why couldnt astral rings be in Den of Rancor or something? No one gets AF from there

Anyway, I hope you have the luck that Bard did, rather than what I went through. I wouldnt wish that experience on anyone. Happy hunting

heh, my experience in oztroja was very easy

my static and i were in the "room" pulling in yags. i think we had an alliance because others needed keys as well. lonnnnnng time killing, drk (or someone who needed a key, i forget) goes afk... and a key drops. i lot and get the highest lot so far... the waiting was PAINFUL. i was hoping he didn't return so that i would win the lot and he would just miss out.

it falls to me - YAY! well, we kill more and the dark is STILL afk. party/alliance disbands. he's still afk. oh well his fault.

i hang around to coffer hunt. i bring up the coffer map on my laptop. i begin making the rounds. i'm not there for 3 laps when what do i discover - i coffer right next to a yagudo. F it i think. i can get this without agro.

yay! i get it. ruh roh, yagudo sees me. chainspell->warp after i get my tabard. HURRAH!

that's my happy story. good luck.
                harr!

I really found this to be a very easy coffer to get. My static killed Yags at level 58 and got the 2 keys we needed in about 3 hours plus we got tons of decent gil items most notably bard scrolls of high level.

In my experience the key drop rate is pretty inconsistent - the first time my LS went there we went about 3 hours with no keys (we went there on the spur of the moment after getting all the keys we needed in Beadeaux, so we didn't have much time left before people needed to log off). The second time we had about an hour with no keys, then 3 yagudo in a row dropped the key - we were amazed. An hour or so later we got our fourth and last key. Both times we had at least one THF main and a couple of /THFs.

After the rest of the party left, another RDM, a BRD and I stayed behind to look for the coffer. We eventually had the idea of leaving one person in the statue room while the others took turns running around looking, but we didn't manage to find any coffers in the next couple hours (there were other people running around too, as you probably know, Oztroja is infested with THFs).

So I decided to log off in the statue room and come back later to see if the coffer had respawned (I had used the same strategy in Garlaige). But the next morning was JP prime time - there were THREE groups hunting keys there and THFs roaming around too. Fortunately with one of the JP parties camping in the statue room, I had no trouble getting back in after I checked the coffer spots, so I logged there again.

Finally around 3 pm Eastern there were many fewer people on and I just kept running around until I finally found it, at the corner of the stairs that leads up to the top floor.

If you are worried about leaving the statue room, bring a friend - they just have to sit there and let you know if it pops, so they're in no danger after they get there. (If you don't have any friends, AF is going to be tough for you, and not just this one. I *strongly* recommend doing AF with friends, static PT or LS rather than in pickup parties.)

Also: during this time I got aggroed a couple of times when a yagudo turned around while I was recasting Invis (sometimes I made it to a safe spot, sometimes I just had to stand behind them). I didn't die, though - once I chainspell warped, a couple times I put yagudo to sleep and warped. (Luckily all my aggros were on the second floor down, not the Assassin etc. level yagudos.) I did this before I got to level 58, so I couldn't Escape, but it would have cut down a lot on the time to get back into the castle if you do have to leave it to shed aggro.

Good luck, and believe me - it will be worth it when you hit level 58 and put on your tabard. ^.^

I was very lucky with Oz. Went to closest coffer spawn point, and there it was. Not only that but a thief was standing right beside the coffer just staring at it. Not more then 30 seconds after I got the cofffer, that thief started moving around again. Talk about perfect timing.

From all the stories I've heard from friends in game and on online forums, Castle Oztroja coffer is really random. I've heard of people spending days killing yags and no key, and also days looking around trying to beat thieves to the coffers.

I think my experience was extremely lucky since it seemed to just fall into my lap while doing other things. I got my key when when I was lvl 56 doing Windurst Mission 6-2 while killing yagudos for an item we needed. The people I was with knew I needed the key and kindly passed on it for me. I was in no rush to find the coffer since I wasn't even able to wear it. Then, a while later, while showing LS members where to go for genkai III, I went to go light the switch for the people in my party to enter the room when I saw the coffer right there. Dropped invis, openned it, invis'ed up again and I had my Tabard.

My best bet would be to check to see how many thieves are running around and if there seems to be a few coffer hunting, then camp the coffer in the room. Otherwise running around might be a better deal. You only need invisible and can recast it while invisible anyways so you're never really in any danger until you find the coffer and have to drop invis to open it. With AF I think persistance is key.
