  • RDM / NIN build 74+

*Edit entry, changed the topic slightly to specify what the contents of the thread is, and make it easier to find in searches for future rdm seeking avatar info*

    Hi,

The following is a poor mans (specifically me) thoughts on creating a workable rdm/nin build at 74+.

The object of the build is : Soloing the somewhat unsual mobs. NMs, Avatars and the like.

The object of the build is not : being uber, sub vs. sub debate, or the end to all ends.

Its a tool for a limited selection of situations and meant for my enjoyment of fooling around doing things that will get me horribly killed now and then.

That aside, lets get to the build and hopefully some input and experiences of what it can be used for.

    Parameters for build :
    - Smallish LS, no HMN capacity, max 1 medium end NM/HMN item.
    - A small 70+ PT is infrequently- and a small 65+ alliance is very infrequently available for questing, max 1 good quest item.
    - A low Dynamis AF2 possibility is present, max. 1 item, only the 4 start cities.
    - Gear selection has to come from what is 1. AH or 2. Solo / duoable within reason.
    - The builder is poor, so extravagent items are out of the question (ie. dusk gear and the like).
    - CP items are available within reason.
    - Crafters for all crafts are available with reason (80- skill).

Focus of build : Accuracy and Evasion
    - Acc is in focus due to determining ability to hit % the mob and thus inflicting damage dependably.
    - Evasion is in focus due to determining ability to sustain shadows long enough for timers to reset and general dmg avoidance.

    Foundation
    - RDM / NIN
    - B in Sword, B in Dagger. Sword is capped at 244 at 74, Dagger is 0 but planned upgraded.
    - Evasion is D. and capped at 208.

Typical comparison /nin or nin/ classes
    - Thf. Evasion A+ around 270+ skill. Weapon skill A-
    - Nin. Evasion A- around 260+ skill. Weapon skill A-

    General Assumption :
    - Nin being a primary shadow using class, can be said to be a general guideline for shadow fighting's capacity, at its different levels. Thus approximation of Nin evasion by an rdm/nin could be said to be a very rough approximation of, at which level shadow fighting is "efficient" and resting it itself without aid from spells.
    - A sub Nin evasion level must, however, be envisioned due to the huge gap between rdm base and nin base. Thus the slack will have to be picked up to a higher or lower degree (depending on ability to gain evasion and mob being fought) by rdm abilities that act as stop gaps. Stoneskin, Haste and Phalanx being primary examples of buffs, Slow, Paralyze and blind for debuffs. Gravity for acc aid.

    The build.

    - Head : Emperor hair Pin +10eva +3dex +3agi (Switch : RDM AF Hat fast cast)
    - Neck : Evasion Torque +7eva (Switch : Mermans Gorget +5acc)
    - Ear : Platinum Ear +8eva total (Switch NM/HMN : Bat Earrings +30eva total when blinded)
    - Body : Cardinal +4acc +4eva
    - Hands : Tactical Magicians handcuffs(+1) +5eva +5acc inside nation control (Switch : Windy hands rank8 +10eva outside nation)
    - Rings : Agility Rings/Dex Rings +6(half effect on acc or eva) total (Switch : Lightning ring +15acc -15%hp on lightning day, Wind Ring +15eva -15%hp on windday)
    - Back : Dodge Mantle +5eva (Switch : Amemit mantle +10atk)
    - Waist : Life belt +10acc (Switch : Survival belt +5eva)
    - Legs : Torama +3eva (Switch : RDM AF legs)
    - Feet : Dance shoes +6eva

    Weapon 1 : Royal Guard Fleuret +6acc +5parry
    Weapon 2 : Royal Guard Fleuret +6acc +5parry

    Upgrades.
Head : Optical Hat quest (capacity present : Duration min. 1 month)
Body : Narishima +3str, +4acc +4eva (very limited benefit of upg)
Feet : RDM AF2 Feet (low chance)
Weapon 1 : Joyuse (capacity present : duration 1 month)

    Build final :
(range is : Region inside or outside nations control )

    Standard :
    26-31 accuracy
    51-56 evasion

most common switch : Merman for Evasion torque +5acc -7eva.

    NM build :
    Bat earrings +30eva -blind = +22evasion (30 - 8 from normal earrings)

    Windday : +15eva -15%hp
    Lightningday : +15acc -15%hp

    Extreme sitatution :
Wind day + NM build = 85+ evasion

    End comparison :
A 74+ nin will boast around 260+ (base) + 30-40eva (gear) in a fairly relaxed config = ~300eva total and will have a pretty good acc due to base nin stats + gear, probably 40+.

The build will have around 260eva in the standard build, and up to 280-300eva in very specific situations. Acc will wobble around 26-35 depending on mob, mostly 30+acc.

I suspect that acc. is a bit on the low end, and the eva. is workable.

    Food :
    - Navarin (primary)
    - Meat Kabob (secondary, when low chance for stoneskin to get punctured often)
    - Fish Kabob (secondary, when high chance for stoneskin to get punctured often)

Thats about it. The build almost done, and i expect to test it within a weeks time.
Primary target would be : Avatars, fun NMs, Quests, and most importantly goofing around with friends while dying horribly

    Constructive comments and experiences welcomed.

I think for the neck part Spirit Torque is better. It adds Direct Evation up of +5 If I recall it was a lvl 50 gear.

i think you have a serious shot at avatars.

duo an avatar with a whm or blm/whm. just for backup.

and i would leave your hat on. fast cast is too important - especially if you're sweating over the utsusemi timer. leave it on and worry about swapping your other equips.

i never realized how awesome fast cast is post 60. i've been lvl'ing drk and i'm constantly checking the drain timer. its HUGE.

fast cast is a strength that, if i were you, i wouldn't mess with. that's my only big complaint with what you have.

and enhancing sword should be an addtional goal. i believe in your situation, that's very obtainable. on the sword note, is the ryl grd flueret the best sword for you? are there any better ones?

      so good luck with that

I don't think you will need the Fleurets, at least not for the +acc stats... You should be able to hit just fine.

+parry is actually quite nice when I've soloed harder NM's etc... I've been very surprised at how often parry kicks in on T/VT mobs, even without the Fleurets.

I would go for a much higher dmg sword with a lowish delay. I am only 64 so I cannot recommend specifics for your purpose. I would also think it would be advisable to solo avatars with daggers instead of sword.

Obviously I have never soloed an avatar, but the experience I have with fighting them shows the melee weapons doing almost no damage compared to magic effects. I would have to assume your Enblizzard would land fully against Garuda on 90% or more swings, for example. With /NIN and (2) 150 delay daggers this should add up extremely quickly. Just food for thought, if someone who has soloed one posts on here then listen to them instead of me ^_^

Instead of Dex/Agi rings you might want to take a look at Tiger Rings (+2 Agi +2 Attack) and maybe switch to Coral/Merman rings/earrings once the avatar (when you fight them that is) nearing 1/2 hp for those astral flows for the -magic damage % incase it goes through your stoneskin or the +resist stuff.

On your NM/HNM build, the bat earrings probably won't be needed since it will take much longer to solo one if you have blind on. If you plan on having other people with you camping a NM and plan on taking dealing damage will probably be more beneficial since it will help suppliment your spell casting in maintaining hate.

If you want to go with evasion earring try the -attack +evasion earrings if most of your damage will be coming from en-spells since attack would become a fairly pointless venture, those agi rings might be good in this case. Also, try looking into Fenrir's Stone (Daytime: +30HP, Night: Evasion+10, Ranged Slot).

Waist: Possibly keep a Mithran Stone (+3eva, +3acc) as a middle ground between your life belt and survivial belt, and a -spell interruption belt as well.

Follow up on some of the comments,

              1.
Spirit Torque (+5evasion +10mp) and Evasion Torque (+7evasion +7hp), is a bit of a toss up.

On one hand, evasion enhances what is primarily keeping me alive in the fights, namely having a shadow up. On the other hand mp is our currency as mages.

I think which one is best will depend on what is being fought, and what is needed most between mp and evasion.

              2.
Keeping the rdm af hat on is quite tempting as fast cast enhancenments are very nice to have around. I will probably end up in an switch macro in the beginning with it being switched in for shadows and spells. After a while it will no doubt drive me nuts having my toon blink on equip. shifts so often, but hopefully i will have learned enough to select the right head item depending on the mob being fought.

              3.
The Royal guard sword, is not really the best sword around for me, but it is the most affordable that at the same time gives some badly needed accuracy. It is also fast, for a sword, at 215delay.

I have the habit of soloing steelshells, Skimmers and Elder Gobbues in Boyada, and i really need the acc. for those kind of mobs. I suspect that the avatars will be relatively easy to hit compared to them though.

              4.
I am, as my dagger skill not doubt reveals, not much into daggers. This steems from an earlier age where i soloed Robber Crabs (Kuftal, Boyada, Terrigan), and noticed that as a sword wielder i could kill as fast or faster, despite doing it as a rdm/blm, as the dagger wielding rdm/nin's that also had taken a liking to the mobs.

However i am not blind to the fact, that a dagger for some type of mobs, could provide benefits.

              5.
Tiger rings sounds like an idea, it will counter some of the -atk from the earrings, and the direct evasion loss will be fairly minimal compared to the pure agi rings (in the area of 1evasion lost for 4atk and 6defense gained), the extra +6defense is also ok given that the build is a tad low defense.

              6.
Bat earrings provide naughty amounts of evasion, and i can control when they kick in (since i will be self blinding or removing same, myself). Also some extra acc. can be traded in for some evasion if the blind is too anoying, with an extra +30eva. there should be room for it.

No no you got a bit confused here. The Evation torque ups your Evasion "SKILL" while the Spirit torque adds directly to the evation "STAT" many say spirit torque is better since it directly adds to the evasion "STAT" and not skill.

ah, i see, shiia. i did not see that spirit was "evasion +5" where evasion torque is "evasion SKILL +7".

i have a slight clue as to the difference. my guess is this:

(some formula calculating evasion + evasion skill) = EVASION

where the spirit torque juices up the right side of the equation, the evasion torque juices up the left side of the equation.

and for those that don't know, shiia points out that it is much better to increase the right side of the equation. she is most likely correct, so listen to her. thanks shiia.

Sounds good, just don't expect to evade even close to a thf or a nin.

Evasion skill (visible), and the evasion stat are separate, you can't just add X and Y and say "I have Z total evasion;" it doesn't quite work that way. Example being, naked 74nin (264eva skill) and 74rdm (208eva skill) with +56 eva from equipment will not have the same overall evasion rate.

Overall though, I find such extreme equipment rather pointless. Avatars, you can solo just fine with just regular equipment; whether you live or die pretty much depends on whether you resist Astral Flow. Pretty much any NM that you have any chance of winning the pull solo, is easy enough to beat without leet gear. High end HNMs, are out of the question for obvious reasons.

I suppose the only real use is for mid-range NMs like Aquarius and Ose, or the mid-high ones like Serket/Roc/Behemoth/Admantoise/Simurgh/etc. Aqua and Ose are quicker, easier, and less risky to beat by gravity marathon. Roc and Simurgh are extremely accurate, no amount of +evasion will help. Serket is perhaps the most popular rdm-solo dream mob, but winning the pull alone in the first place is very, very hard.

[edit] At the end of the day, I think that rdm as a mage-soloer is actually better than rdm as a melee-soloer. Even exp-wise: In my free time I'll run up to tu'lia and gravity nuke sleep light elementals for about 1.5k exp per hour, and 7-10 light clusters.

If the way evasion is calculated is the same as that of accuracy, Ivasion Torque must give us [7 * 0.9] = 6.3 Evasion.

                        For instance,

                        [LV1 - LV60]
                        1 Weapon Skill = 1 Accuracy

                        [LV61 - LV75] (after December 2003 update)
                        1 Weapon Skill = 0.9 Accuracy (approximately)

As we know, we have to be LV65 to equip Ivasion Torque. That's why I formulated a hypothesis like this.

                        1 Evasion Skill = 0.9 Evasion.

It's just my guess anyway. There's no way we can verify this. However, Evasion Torque is, to me, necessary when I farm hard punchers.

I'm trying to solo some of them today if I have time.

Ended up taking Ramuh on with a semi fininished build. Purposes was really just to gain some experience with avatars (i have never fought them before, yes i am that big of a slacker )

Amusingly i won in the first attempt to my great surprise.

                          Equipment :

                          - Head : Emperor hair Pin +10eva +3dex +3agi
                          - Neck : Switch : Mermans Gorget +5acc
                          - Ear : Dodge x 2 +6eva
                          - Body : Cardinal +4acc +4eva
                          - Hands : Tactical Magicians handcuffs(+1) +5eva +5acc inside nation control (li'telor was inside windy control, taru power^^)
                          - Rings : Tiger x 2 4agi 6def 4atk
                          - Back : Torama 4eva
                          - Waist : Life belt +10acc
                          - Legs : Windy CP legs +1 5eva 12mp
                          - Feet : Errant (forgot to change to dance shoes )

Weapon 1 : Sapara of Trials
                          Weapon 2 : Royal Guard Fleuret +6acc +5parry

                          The fight.
Buffed a bit outside and went in. I was pleasantly surprised by the scenery which i found very well done. Ran up to where i could just barely target Ramuh and began buffing the short duration buffs (En- spells etc).

This is where i got the first surprise, Ramuh aggroed O.o

I guess he react to the first spell cast, or first action within a very large trigger range. Being the avatar newbie i am, i didnt know beforehand.

Eventually last buffs got up, and shadows and stoneskin kept him at bay.

Melee didnt face him much to my surprise, about 15-20dmg with no noticable difference between the sapara 38dmg and then royal 36dmg. Enspells dmg was a bit erratic, but mostly 14-18dmg pr hit. Hit% was good at around 85+%.

I started out with AF hat but ended up with Emp. hairpin, the difference was noticable. Actually more noticable than i had expected which make me believe that the emp hairpin pushed me over some treshhold of evasion vs. ramuh accuracy, so the milage may wary if others try it in a different build.

                          General points of the fight.
                          - Avatars has enspells of their element on, can't be dispelled it seems and probably innate ability, not a spell.
                          - Ramuh can be Slowed, but blind, paralyze didnt stick at all.
                          - I took below 200melee dmg in the fight, as Ramuh had a very high miss percentage.
                          - Melee and melee WS has low dmg potentiel against him. Spirits did its job just fine.
                          - Odds are that converting is needed, it was for me, try waiting till he has done a WS, put fresh shadows up and then convert/heal. Given that the Avatar has WS abilities that can 1shot Stoneskin, its the safest way as they usually cant spam WSs on top of each other.

                          Ramuh abilities i meet :
                          - Chaotic strike (forget exact name) : seemed like a multihit WS. Shadows absorb it, although it will cost 1-3 doing so.
                          - Lightning Shield (forget name) : Gives him shockspikes, quite harmless due to barthunder, shell4 and stoneskin.
                          - Judgement Bolt : Burns shadows away, but my stoneskin took it. Maybe i was lucky i dunno, it being his 2hr and all.
                          - Thunder Storm >.< : In my opinion this is Ramuh's claim to fame in a solo fight, it consistently burned my stoneskin off and did 400+ dmg even with barthunder and shell4. Also it was his most popular WS (5 of them). I took the vast majority of dmg in the fight from this one move. It didnt touch shadows, and bypasses them completly.

                          Lessons learned :
                          - 1 Sword is recommendable for Spirits Within as it seems to be the most effecient ws.
                          - 1 Dagger should probably be employed since melee dmg is low, faster hits with en- dmg is probably better.
                          - Buff outside, even most the short duration spells.
                          - Evasion had a noticable impact, accuracy was more than good.
                          - Having -magic dmg% gear, for a switch on some WS would probably be beneficial, ThunderStorm was for instance rather slow for a WS.

                            congrats!

interesting the emp hairpin was that noticable. hmm.

very disappointing you didn't kill him with your warlock's chapeau.
