My first encounter with Shadow Dragon...

Well, I finally fought it, after hearing many stories on here (including Bono's unfortunate battle earlier)

I was actually in Xacabard to get a Bruised Starfruit from the Weapons there for a Windurst quest. Before I started to attack the first Cursed Weapon, I noticed an Ice elemental nearby that checked "Easy Prey, low defence, low evasion". I was worried it aggro me when I started casting, so I did what any self-respecting RDM would do... I killed it ^^ Interesting drops... 2 Ice Clusters, 1 Ice crystal, and a beastman seal...

Anyway, killed a couple of Cursed Weapons when I noticed a huge shape in the distance, and I knew right away it was Shadow Dragon. I checked it. "Easy Prey, Low Evasion". I consulted with my Linkshell.. "should I?" They said go for it, so I started buffing up. Just then I noticed the only WHM in my LS with Raise 2 was logging off. I told him to "wait" but too late, he was gone. It would have been nice for a backup if he could come raise 2 me if a "bono-like" disaster happened. I decided to risk it.

I didn't notice him attempt to use the petrify move at all, but I was ready to turn around in case he did. I slept him to start the battle so I could debuff him, then re-slept him once as a precaution when he was at about 30% life, and my stoneskin/phalanx ran out. Other than that, I would say if we were in prison, he would have been my "bitch" I had full HP, and 475 MP left at the end of the fight. I casted Barstone but I never did purchase Barpetrify (and from its reported effectiveness, I dont plan to) so I was a bit worried, but it went ok. Nice drop... 1500 gil, and a dark crystal, in addition to the 25 exp.

Wish I had taken pictures, but I always forget >.< Guess I could always do it again. Whats the repop time for the dragon? And is the spawn location random anywhere in zone or certain area?

i killed a shadow dragon nearly naked once...he hit like a semi (because i had mining gear on...forgot to switch =\.) i casted few spells except cure, blink, stoneskin and sleep...nothing offensive...beat it down with my pole. i was 63 at the time. i don't recall the dragon ever attempting to use petrify...man, it would've turned out bad if he did .

just killed it today by chance when i pointed it out to some friends, i only for 297 gil cause we were in a allience going to kill Dark Spark.

heh, everyone must think i die to that fucker constantly. :spin:

i've killed him a lot. most of the time you're going to have an easy time with him. i've killed him as early as 60, solo. most of the time i'm fighting with a gimped sub too - lvl 15 thf.

its just that one time where he pulls his BS that will enrage you. especially if you're lvl 68. i've even seen him pull his "baleful gaze" and he misses me. it comes and it goes - lucky or unlucky.

one thing that is a good idea is to attack him from the side or behind. he won't turn to fight you, he'll attack with his legs or tail. you're almost guarenteed NOT to get petrified (he won't use the move).

but congrats! solo'ing stuff is a lot of fun.

LOL, sorry Bono, didn't mean to imply that SD owns you daily or anything, just that you had some bad luck last time, and I was worried that would happen to me. Seeing how easy he was at 62, I can only imagine how easy it must be for you to kill him. I was in an alliance going to do BRD af2 and I ran into SD again, and soloed him to about 5% health when other members of the alliance arrived and finished him off. Gil was about 180 each. Meh...

Both times I had BLM sub, so I was able to drain him, but honestly, I would only nuke maybe once per fight for novelty, and I would turn around before nuking. Wouldnt want to have him use Baleful Gaze while I'm in the middle of casting Blizz 2 ^^

take your thf sub and when you solo him, you'll get a pretty 2k

Hey, nothing was wrong that his petrify lasted 4 minutes on me. You, on the other hand, had petrify resists, so you have no excuses!
