  • Haste

I've seen lots of posts in this forum about hasting ninjas, or keeping yourself hastened to lessen cast time, but does haste really work this way? My own personal belief (after running pld up to 62) was that it did. I had forgotten about the subject untill recently when my rdm became high enough to use haste, and my friend suggested I keep the warrior / ninja tank in our group hasted so he will have an easier time casting Utsusemi. Good idea I think, since I remember my Pld days. I suggest it to the party, who all think I'm crazy, they tell me haste has no effect on casting time. We try it anyway, of course, and the warrior ninja indeed tells me he notices no difference.

So I decided to test it myself using a java stopwatch on my second computer I found through the magic of google. I pick the longest spell I can think of, Stoneskin, since any percentage haste effect would be more noticable the larger the cast time is. I hit the start button with my left hand at the same time I start casting the spell with my right. I hit the stop button when the spell casting time hits "100%" not when the stone comes up. I cast it several times without haste, getting numbers around 10 seconds each time (no more than 0.2 tenths plus or minus). Now I put on haste, and cast it again, to my shock, 10 seconds! Haste made no difference whatsoever. I decide to try specifically with Utsusemi: Ichi, since ninjitsu is sort of magic but sort of isn't. Without haste: 6.3 seconds, with haste: 6.3 seconds.

So my question is this: Is this just a common misconception about haste? Perhaps this was changed in an update somewhere along the road?

Haste has no effect on spell casting speed. It affects how long until you can cast it again. Eg: Hasted pld can cast flash more often (shorter cooldown). I think that is where you are getting confused. It also shortens the cooldown time for many abilties like sentinal, defender, shield bash, sneak attack with provoke being the main exception to the rule (always 30 sec).

Easy way to test this is cast haste on someone else followed immidiately by /recast "Haste" to see the normal cooldown time. Then haste your self and check the /recast "Haste" time. You should find that the recast time is smaller now.

that's recast time, not cast time. did you happen to look at the cooldown timer before and after hasting? there is a difference of a few seconds with and without it. it saves ninja's asses from time to time and i've noticed it takes away some time from using abilities with my paladin.
