  • RDM Archery

Hello. Lately I have been experimenting with some of the RDM's lesser advertised skills, to learn more about the limits and potentials of the job.

Of all the skills I've tried, I have to say that archery has flat out amazed me in usefulness. I mostly brought this skill up for use in BCNM40 at Waughroon, and simple curiosity. (Own the record on it by 5 minutes with my shell now.)

Quick Facts about RDM Archery: We have a D in the skill. We do not get access to the weaponskills. We are very limited in bow choices, but not limited from many ammo options. We are allowed to wear the +ranged accuracy, -accuracy rings to bring up our hit rate.

I am currently using a Composite Bow+1(20k), and Scorpion Arrows(2k a stack), which combine to give me a 61 damage weapon, with 531 delay and +8 ranged accuracy, and I am able to land hits on ITs for 35-50, EMs for 60-100, and TWTBWs for 150-300.

While this can't compare to my 40 RNG friend, who lands hits for 75-150, 125-200, and 250-400 on the same mobs, the fact remains that RDM Archery isn't that bad, especially when combined with some kiting techniques solo, or simply as a sideline damage bonus during PTs.

Some advanced tactics I have put to use with RDM Archery:
    - Archery builds TP which you can put to use with Starlight for MP recovery while wielding a club type weapon in your main slot. (Requires 100 club skill.)
    - You have bind and gravity, and can endlessly kite, and slaughter mobs of EM or lower con, but keep in mind gravity loses potency over time, bind on the other hand doesn't really, nor does sleep.
    - You can use sleep arrows, and other status effect arrows to disable enemies. *!*Status proc arrows cause the proc 100% of the time IF the arrow hits. You CAN kill monsters (and players in Ballista) by repeatedly shooting them with sleep arrows for X damage, and immediately cause resleep. There is nothing they can do about it. The same is true for elemental proc arrows, and any other associated status/damage effect. - Note, when you're fighting XP mobs such as ITs or even VTs, the mobs CAN resist your procs, I'm not sure what determines resist rate.
    - Farming with wooden arrows(3 gil each) and a bow can drastically speed up farming, especially if you're farming lower level beastmen, if not then it will help take a nice chunk off to start the fight (and build TP.)

So I am curious, how many other RDMs out there utilize the archery skill, and how? If so, what are your experiences with it, and how does it progress?

I actually use a bow when farming mainly to concerve MP for when I really feel I need it, and lessening the need for resting(generally when farming weaks). I normally don't really use it for any types of mobs higher than easy because then I normally use a spell (paralyze, silence, dia, bio depending on mob) to pull them when soloing or farming stronger prey.

Whenever I have free time, I either raise my archery skill or level RNG. Since we don't have any diffuculty taking EM cons by ourselves, we can easily cap the skill.

Well, the main reason I raise both is because I want to be RDM/RNG when I join in Ballista.

I'm LV66 RDM now and when I sub RNG, I'm able to shoot Sidewinder once the skill reaches 175! When in Ballista, we don't seem to have problem hitting them even with "D" skill although we still need 150%+ TP to make it.

I won't use Sleep Arrows but Demon Arrows (D34, Effect:Lowers 12.5%? of their Attack) and probably Kabura Arrow (D38, Effect:Silence) once I reach LV70. As for bows I use, I can't afford to buy Rosenbogen and I will use Rapid Bow +1.

By the way, I'm thinking of subbing RNG when I go raising my sword skill. This is because RNG's job trait, Accuracy Bonus gives us approximately 13 Accuracy/Ranged Accuracy at sub RNG10 and 30; total 26 points at RDM60/RNG30. When we have our lovely fleuret and Life Belt, we're able to have +42 accuracy. Sounds great, doesn't it?

I wish we had Marksmanship skill, too. I love Acid Bolt

Densetsu on Ragnarok subbed RNG for RDM nearly all his RDM life, then he changed to RNG full time.

When you use archery as RDM can you actually raise the skill? I thought you could only raise it as RNG? I certainly don't mind leaving out Morrion Tathlum for farming, so I might give it a try. My skill is very low at the moment though

Yes, anyone whose main job has archery skill can raise it.

          For your reference,

          WAR: D
          THF: C-
          RDM: D
          RNG: A-
          SAM: C+
          NIN: E

They all have chance to raise it by themselves.

Well, we already know how easily RDM can do it due to Phalanx, Refresh and Stoneskin. I sub BRD and sing Hunter's Prelude on myself when I go raising it.

Anyway, archery does great in Ballista. We can safely store our TP from the distance.

I'm actually scared to start using archery because I'm afraid one day I'll forget I have my morion tathlum equipped, and accidently throw it.

In early levels I did tons of archery and I always had my archery capped... until about kazaam... before that, rdm archery is very powerful.
...so we will step away from the mainstream to live like vagabonds and common dropouts... don't you want to hang out and waste your life with us? -Spike

Started to lv it last night. TWTBW mobs took between 40-70 dmg per arrow. Fairly decent, better than farming with dia.

That was with bone arrows and wrapped bow.

I've seen an RDM do sidewinder and all I can say is ....WOAH!

I'm actually going to start leveling it up. it'll be godly for soloing IMO

I've capped my skill at 112 for my level, and things have scaled up even further.

                    ITs 50-60, EMs 75-100, TWTBW 250-300.

Absolutely amazing how useful archery is proving. I highly suggest all RDMs give it a try.

I'm 95% sure that trait only affects ranged accuracy. I could be wrong though.

So, how can you explain this?

                          A: RDM66/DRK33 (Accuracy +22)
                          B: RDM66/RNG33 (Accuracy +22)

Both are taru with exactly the same gears.

When A (this is me) took a look at a Processionaires, it was Incredibly Tough with high defence and evasion but When B took a look at it, it was only Incredibly Tough with high defence.

Well, it is obvious that that job trait increases accuracy as well as ranged accuracy because RNG's melee hardly misses them even against ITs. Check how fast you build your TP compared to others.

However, I think I have to correct what I stated. The Official Experts Guide says,

                          /RNG10 : +10 Accuracy/Ranged Accuracy
                          /RNG30 : +12 (Total 22) Accuracy/Ranged Accuracy
                          /RNG50 : +13 (Total 35) Accuracy/Ranged Accuracy

                          For your reference,

                          Focus (MNK25): +20 Accuracy
                          Aggressor (WAR45): +25 Accuracy
Sword Madrigal (BRD11): +15 Accuracy (Can be up to +19 with Traversiere +1)
Great Sword Madrigal (BRD51): +25 Accuracy (Can be up to +29 with Traversiere +1)

What is, and where is the Official Experts Guide? I'd like to read through it, or buy a copy if it has information like the amount of accuracy things like that give.
