  • Finally got Refresh, any tips?

First off I'd like to say refresh makes a HUGE difference, I was struggling with my PT to get to 41, there was alot of downtime and it took like half an hour just to get me 1.3k, after I leveled up I learned Refresh, 1 hour later I am now level 42.

Here is how I use it, I just figured this own my own though if theres better way tell me.

1 - Refresh Myself, cause I'm probably gonna waste 80-120mp refreshing 2-3 other people so I might as well refresh myself for it.
2 - Refresh members, healer takes priority, then blackmage, and then Paladin, if I can slap a refresh on a DRK I will, but I find its not worth it, so I rarely refreshed the drk in my pt.

When my refresh runs out, rinse and repeat steps 1 and 2, I we mustve gone on without resting for like half an hour, we rested twice I think during an hour, the rest was just pull after pull though we couldnt get past xp chain #5, but it was good enough

    Refresh = pwn ^^

For me, I prefer to Refresh myself, then the PLD, then the WHM, then the BLM, and then anyone else. Reason being, PLD has less MP and needs to keep hate on him/herself with Cures and Flash. If you put PLD at let's say, after the BLM... s/he's missing a few MP... MP that might be really important if it's a heated battle and the mages are drawing too much enmity.

    To sum it up...
RDM > PLD > WHM > BLM, DRK when MP gets low ^^

Seems you have it and congrat .

It's not necessary but I put /recast "Convert" and /recast "Refresh" in some of my macros to see when they are available.

It would help to have a macro that tells me when the next Refresh can be casted, how would I make one?

        Right now I refresh

        2-3 Enfeebles

        Refresh

Slap a couple of cures on the tank

        Refresh

        Some extra Enfeebles

        Refresh

Finish off mob with my best nuke or something if its near death.

The recast seems to be 16, but sometimes I cant get it fast enough and I allow 30 seconds or so to pass without refreshing someone that needs it just cause it's kind of hard to telle when the next ones up just counting the seconds in your head.

I have it in my mp report.

/p My mp is at <mpp>.
          /recast "Refresh"
          /recast "Convert"

but you could just take out the mp report line.

If there is no brd in the party and missed someone, I look at the mp bars. If a bar doesn't go up by 3 every few seconds it isn't refreshed.

oooh, i like that macro idea. the only thing i would change is make the first line:

/echo my mp is at <mpp>..

maybe add a "/recast "Gravity" since that is my favorite enfeeble

oh, and since we're doing or spell order, i'll chime in...

              -refresh
              -grav, dia2(or bio2), poi2
              -refresh pld
              -slow, para, blind
              -refresh whm
              -nuke nuke nuke!
              -refresh blm

etc etc ... btw, poison2 has become a favorite spell of mine. great DOT and it seems to stick especially well.
              harr!

Wow...I had to go here and read how to use refresh effectively to keep refreshing everyone (note: at lvl 41 I was refreshing whoever needs it only). Congratulations.

My method of recasting it is putting a /wait 20 ...but it seems this is erased when another macro is used. Anyway, once you get used to refreshing everyone...you'll know by heart the downtime and when to recast refresh.

You'll get the hang of the timing after a couple of levels. /recast Refresh doesn't hurt either, but I don't find it necessary.

When you get a chance look at the MP bars and see whose isn't going up - by this time I had plenty of practice doing the same thing with Regen and HP bars.

It may take a few levels for PLD to adjust their tactics to being Refreshed. A lot of PLD in the 30s seem to not cast much because they don't want to "waste" TP by sitting (WAR habits, I guess). But once they get used to having more MP, and healing more in combat, it'll become a higher priority to keep them Refreshed.

Look at it this way - if the PLD heals, the PLD gains hate; if the WHM heals, the WHM gains hate. Which is better?

On the other hand, you should be careful about refreshing BLM. Some of them will spam nukes and get hate, which causes a lot more problems than it solves. Without refresh they'll have to sit for MP and keep them from drawing hate. Of course if you have a good BLM this isn't an issue.

If you can keep up a perfect refresh cycle, the order isn't really that important.

                    Hypothetical Situation:
Refresh Self, /wait 18 /echo Refresh is Back!
Refresh Whm, /wait 18 /echo Refresh is Back!
Refresh Blm, /wait 18 /echo Refresh is Back!
Refresh Pld, /wait 18 /echo Refresh is Back!

Assuming that the spell lasts x minutes, when that time expires, it will expire for everyone in 18-20 second intervals. Therefore, the order is only effective at the very first fight. After that, the most important thing is keeping up on your order.

I've always done opposite of the general opinion in this forum in that I refresh myself -> whm -> blm -> pld -> others as needed. The reason being is that in the very first fight the white mage will have used MP on PIV and sometimes Shellra IV, not including any other buffs (barspells, etc). The whm normally starts pre-pull with a slight deficit, whereas the pld does not. If you refresh the pld first, you're technically losing the some of the effectiveness of refresh.

The only real reason to start out with the pld first is just a sort of insurance. If you're unable to keep up a dedicated refresh cycle, the paladin will be refreshed first (and will need refresh first) when you are catching back up.

You'll note that I mentioned 'others as needed' above. Dark knights are the best example of this. Many of them will not require refresh every single fight, especially if they can aspir whatever you're fighting.

Anyway, I'm not trying to revolutionize anyone's technique, just giving my own! After a few levels of refreshing, you'll develop your own quirks, I'm sure. Good luck and have fun.
