• Tarutaru RDM Vs Maat

Normally I wouldnt come to boards asking for tips anyhow,

Ive taken 5 attempts at Maat now. Each time I havent managed to get him any farther then 40%. Each time ive tried to sleep him at the start and each time ive failed, Its starting to irriate me to no end.

Ive been using a Melon Pie + 1 outside of the BC, as soon as I enter I run up to him and use a Vampire Juice, and then cast Shell 4, Blink and Stoneskin and Phalanx on myself, I then try to cast Sleep 2, not once has it slept.

Everytime after this I would enter Chainspell and start casting Aero III 2 or 3 times then Blink. Then when I got to about 100mp I would Recast Stoneskin then Blink then Convert then Cure 4 myself. And continue, when I fell below 75% mp from that convert I use a Vile Elixir. And Continue, every time I die around 40% here, usually at around 300mp ; ;.

Can anyone who has won this before tear apart my stratagy and give me some hints on what im doing wrong, and what I can do right to possibly win this fight, dont really feel like dragging my BLM friend to Uggiepeth to duo pots every night for the next few weeks >_<;

dia his blink
keep stonekin and blink up
aero III his ass

the main thing I noticed you didn't do was dispel...I doubt you'll ever get it sleep to stick without it...and your spell damage will be terrible if shell is up as well...

There are other posts (like the one linked) that go into more detail than I did though.

Sleep is a black magic spell, and thus, is affected by INT, not MND, correct? My understanding is that any enfeeble listed under Black magic is INT based, while any spell listed under White magic is MND based.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't see why it would be the other way around... Therefore, you should load up on +INT gear to make that sleep stick. Too bad INT didn't have an accessory equivalent to the Justice Badge...

All enfeeble is not mind, black magic enfeeble are int, white magic enfeeble are mnd.

e.g.
Sleep, dispel, gravity, are int

Paralyze, slow, dia are mnd

and of course bio is darkness not enfeeble.

Try a sleep2 then a sleep1, if neither stick then don't bother trying again. I beat maat without sleeping him, so that's not essential.

In my opinion the most crucial part of the fight is after you dispel his shell and use chainspell. Speed is of the essense here; I casted 8 Aero 3's during my chainspell in addition to blink/stoneskin/convert/cure (blink is your most efficient defense against his spells). Each Aero3 did 330-360 damage, and I'm Mithra so I have lower int than you do.

Having said that, it's also luck; depending on what Maat does during his chainspell you might die if you do everything right anyway; examples being if he uses a Cure4 or two, or does nothing but high damage attack spells.

Also, a friend of mine ate two Asuran fists from Maat back to back, whereas Maat didn't use a single WS on me in the 4 times I fought him ... luck is a huge factor I guess.

If you are still using a holy phial at level 70 you don't deserve to pass limit 5.

Get at least an enfeeble torque and elemental torque.
If you have the money an enhance torque, evasion torque, spirit torque, as well.

Switch in enfeeble torque for sleep and that should increase your likelihood of success. 7 to enfeeble magic skill will do a lot more to reduce your resist likelihood than even 40mnd/int boost.

BTW are you removing Maat's Blink before casting Sleep2 on him?

Yes, im removing his blink, none of my sleeps has ever been blocked by it per says its just been "miss", I do have enfeebling torque. I will try it the next time I go at it, never really thought about it in all honesty.

Also half the time when I have actually begun the fight Maat hasent even cast Blink on himself.

Anyhow got him down to 30% last night without even using potions, he just sorta chain spelled Aero 3 on me twice as I was trying to cure 4 myself and killed me.

Folks..

I'm certainly not a mod or anything, and I'm certainly not going to pretend there's any particular reason for anyone to listen to me about this but..

C'mon, there's no need to get nasty with each other

"How did he get to 71" (the implication being that someone is a complete idiot for not understanding what MND and INT affects) & "You don't deserve to pass Maat if you are still using a holy phial at 70.."

These are unecessary comments. We're in this together, we're supposed to be helping each other out, not cutting each other down. I'll be honest, I'm still learning new and interesting things about FFXI nearly every day. It doesn't make someone a bad or unworthy player if they don't know everything or don't have the top equipment. And if you've never played with the individual in question, you really have no place making that judgment call on what kind of player they are.

I've been playing FFXI for about a year and a half now on the JP client, and since I can only read a little Japanese, I learn a lot from newer players. I also don't always know what every piece of equipment in the game does, since sometimes it does some offbeat thing that I really don't know how to read very well. I have the NA client, on PS2, but since the O and X buttons are totally backward from what I've been using for all this time and have become accustomed to, using the NA client is totally out of the question. I just wind up backing out when I mean to confirm, and confirming when I mean to back out

Anyway, in conclusion, please try to play nice. You don't know the whole picture, and even if you DID know the whole picture, didn't your mother ever teach you that if you can't say something nice, you shouldn't say anything? hehe..

Oh and PS Vinen..

Good luck.. I can tell you 100% that sleeping Maat is NOT a requirement of winning, as it is not something I did when I won. I used sheer brute force (physical and magical) and money.. heh.. My biggest, most important tip for you.. USE AQUAVEIL..

I know a lot of us tend to think of aquaveil as being kind of useless, but it will DRAMATICALLY decrease your spell interruption rate, allowing you to complete those stoneskins, blinks, cure4s, whatever you're trying to cast while he's punching the crud out of you. You'll still be hurting from him punching you and casting on you, but your spell will go off 95% of the time.

* Edited to correct my spelling. Yes, I really AM that much of a spaz. *

Dia>Sleep

Hi, I know a dead and buried topic but i raise this one issue regarding getting sleep to stick,

nearly every time there has been a tie in to getting rid of Blink first and then try to sleep him,

Many times in exp PTs when there has been a misscast on a mob near the fighting by the mages if the spell was a DOT ie Dia, Bio, Poison, or any of the elemental debuffs, The mob gains permanent resist against Sleep, until the DOT wears off,

I site the example of one of the Summoner battles where the big attack is a Sleepaga, the recomended resolution to this attack is that before the Avatar gets to 50% HP to trigger the attack the whole PT uses Poison food hence they all resist the Sleep,

I will take a different approach to maat, im gonna do what all the melees do against him, opo opo neclace and sleep potions, then phalanx shell protect blink stoneskin, get 300tp Chain Spell and Dispel on him till his got nothing on, Aero3 till my chain ends and Kick in Spirits Within that should do around 400-500 dmg for 0mp, if he kicks into his 2hr then i will dump my Sleep2/Sleep macro, then suppose wait out his sleep, during this maybe debuff him, get some rest of my own, reapply my buffs, convert cure whatever is required, I hope that without the use of DOT's Ill be able to get him to snooze. when MP's okay via potions Kick into the A3's again and hope for the best,

my current stats as Taru Rdm are hp830 mp820 im sure both will be less without the /blm sub maybe 100 less,

but i have never read any mention of anyone incorporating any of the tactics used by melees, dont get me wrong im lvl70 taru rdm, melee isnt a big part of the picture for me in pts but there are odd mobs that it really doesnt make a diffrence hence i carry around a melee macro+kit, anyway i have my testimony and about 20k left before lvl71 comes knocking, I will be trying this out soon, i'll post results soon, i hope,

but nearly every guide i read mentions remove blink with Dia,
I do understand why this works but Sleep/2 are too good to pass up, I'd rather chain off the bat and remove everything first by spamming dispel than doing it the other way dispel-dia-dispel,

correct me if im wrong but maat uses both the rdm 2hr and the mnk 2hr against us right? if that is so then i would definately hold back the DOT.

please confirm or deny my understanding of this battle,

ps after reading one of the posters Lucy she mentioned
Barfira(as its fireday and I know he will use fire 2 in his chainspell),

and also there was a mention that someone faced a gimped maat who chained Bio's Dia's, so maybe the simple secret is either pick Light Day or Dark Day,
I'd go with light because there is never a mention that Maat cures himself, hence your Cure's will have better effect, one or two points very marginal, maybe that is the secret,
I will go in on Lightsday

hope this works, ^^
