I am lv 22. I havent done a BCNM40 before but i know what one is.

Why? Because I research and use the search facility *points up there*

    BCNM40

    Burning Circle Notorius Monsters.

Its a Burning Circle Event presumably which is capped at lv 40 meaning lv 60's enter and are delevelled to 40.

Don't expect to be spoonfed answers to questions that have already been answered. Not a rant or flame, just a fact of life.

Phalanx has just about 0 use in PTs. I probably could have lived without it since I don't solo very often. I paid 270K about a month and a half ago. Now, it's 120~130K in Ragnarok. I paid 300K for Refresh. I have seen for as low as 30K in AH
If you don't mind telling, how did you make 600k without soloing much? At least 300k of it at no higher than 41 (well, unless you leveled without Refresh, which I kind of doubt)?

I had to solo for over a week just to raise the 70k for Dispel... mostly because my stuff sold slowly at AH, so it was more real-world time than playtime, but still, I checked Phalanx last night and it's going for 160k. That's another 2 weeks of farming? I guess I'll skip it. At least Refresh is cheap - and Convert is free!

It's weird how RDM have different views of money than other jobs. I was with a paladin last night using a level 18 longsword so I asked him why he didn't switch to centurion since it is only 10k (I'm using one myself when I melee, chestnut wand for casting but I plan to upgrade to solid soon). Immediately all the melees in the party respond in shocked horror, "ONLY 10k?!"

In case you're wondering, the paladin with a level 18 sword hunting worker crawlers did mostly single-digit damage (without cocoon, I was pretty quick on the dispels ) and was lousy at holding hate (he couldn't heal much because he was elvaan with no MP gear). Damage does matter for tanks too.

I have no secret or great money making scheme. I earned it the hard way. I sold all my equipments in storage, did quests and missions, sold crap loads of crystals and other stuff in AH, did onion runs, and lastly borrowed 100K, which I paid back in 1 month. I didn't have Refresh until I was in my mid-50's. I have been playing RDM since June 2002. Back then RDM was very unpopular so it took me a long time to level. When you have played as long as I have you accumulate stuff that you can sell. I also sold conquest items as well. As for the other 300K, Rank 8, 9, 10 gives you great monetary reward tens of thousands. I also sent my items to storage character to sell. Little things and crystals add up over time.

Sorry to dissapoint you all. It was really really tough for me, and it took me looooong time to save.

Rdm originally did not have Convert, nor refresh, and further more their sword skill was C. The usual view from other people were "WEAK WHITE MAGE". It was a pain in the arse to even join any sort of group. Much has changed after the introduction of Convert and refresh. 3MP per 3sec is a huge boost, and it became one of the NON WANTED Members to one of the MOST WANTED member in a group.

i don't know why melees make such a big deal out of money. its true they'll skip something just cuz it costs a bit...like a life belt...i've ran into a few who didn't get this cuz they didn't feel like farming up the 50k for it. i strive to make myself the best damn hume black mage on my server. skill is an important part...forgive me if i sound arrogant but i'm confident in my skills. so its all equipment now...dark staff, morion earrings, (soon to come, zircon rings @ 54), and various +1 equipment isn't cheap, but i managed to acquire this stuff.

so paying 40k instead of 2k for a black cape +1 instead of a black cape gave me +1 int...is it a HUGE boost? no...but i did it anyway...if i can manage to do this, why pray tell, can't a melee shell out 50k for +10 accuracy, which should be an absolute necessity imo. its not like black mages can farm very well...just about all my money came from getting stuff like silk, beastmen blood, tree cuttings, etc. etc. not exactly AE-farmable stuff at level 50. a drk/thf would fare way better than a blm/thf.

when i say "melees" i'm referring to the ones that immediately respond in shock when someone suggests they buy something that costs only 10k to enhance or improve their ability to do their job. to the rest of you, no offense intended ^_^;;. now...back to the topic...as far as i know, all bcnm40s drop phalanx as one of the potential rewards. its not very rare, so you should get it after a few tries, assuming you win...winning is the hard part (which isn't really that hard, once you get the strategy). if u want more info on bcnms, search. the only other way to acquire it is via hard work farming, fishing, crafting, saving up and then buying it.

I wouldn't recommend buying Phalanx to anyone. It really doesn't make sense. As previously stated, Phalanx doesn't have any use in parties. Its great for soloing. Why would you gilfarm 300k gil or more so you can... gilfarm... better....?

Its a handy spell to have when gilfarming, don't get me wrong, but there's so much more benefit to getting it from BCNM rather than gilfarming to buy it.

I laid down 360k on Phalanx, months and months and months ago. I have never, never, never regretted it.

While it is not incredibly useful for level up PTs, I do throw it on in those situations where the PLD, NIN, or WAR is having trouble holding hate in a particular battle. I tend to MB twice in the same renkei, either with Water3 then Stone3, or with Fire3 then Air3, depending on what the renkei is. If I don't have a dedicated BLM in my PT chucking out firega3 or flood or something, it puts a lot of hate on me. 2-3 hits from a totetote monster and my hitpoints go red. With phalanx on, if it takes a few seconds before the attackers can get the hate back, I survive quite nicely.

I also use it before going into a semi-difficult battle, like a summon fight, BC fight for mission, BCNM (any level), AA fight, etc.

I find it's actually most useful when used in conjunction with stoneskin. Since stoneskin absorbs ALL physical damage, but only until you have taken so much damage, having phalanx on as well helps it last considerably longer.

I have been the primary tank against Steelface Baldarich and Amenit, thanks to knowing how to properly use phalanx, stoneskin, and blink in conjunction with one another. Lived to tell the tale on both accounts.

Couple brief words on some of the other topics I've seen here..

40BCNM.. I think the ideal setup for this battle has a WHM as the primary healer for the BRD, and a RDM/WHM as the primary healer for the attackers. RDM has the ability to convert during that battle, can even do it twice if the battle lasts that long (which it usually does). Meanwhile, the WHM can rest while the BRD keeps the mandras asleep, getting up only when the BRD needs to be healed. As for attackers, on a side note, I've had DRGs with me when doing this battle on more than one occassion. They are perfectly fine.

Prices.. Someone was complaining about how much they spent on refresh.. It happens. I spent 420k on refresh. I had it for months and months before it dropped down to the 5k it costs now on Ramuh. I don't regret it. If I had waited until it got cheap to buy it, I wouldn't have had it for all those levels in the meantime. When I first bought it, not all RDMs had this spell. In fact, I'd say only about 25% of 41+ RDMs had it. As I previously stated, I spent 360k on phalanx. I think it's down around 180k now. I don't regret it. I had phalanx when it was an uber rarity, and it was worth spending all that money just to see my PT members freak out and cheer when I'd cast it in a PT. ^^ ..I recently spent 320k on erase for my WHM, and I know there are people who bought it when it cost over 1 million. Raise3 is down to 40k on Ramuh now, and I DISTINCTLY remember when it cost about 1.5 mil. My linkshell leader HAD IT then. If you're going to play this game, I think it's best if you try not to be upset about prices dropping after you buy things. I just picked up the level 70 elf RSE belt last week for 280k. Two months ago that thing was selling at 800k fairly reguarly. So you see, it works both ways sometimes. ^^

                    I agree with SharMarali.

Stoneskin now absorbs 275 damage (Enhancing Magic Skill: 207, MND: 53+28). When I am hit by ITs, I usually take 90 - 100 damage and it goes off after I am hit 3 times. On the other hand, with Phalanx (absorbs 19 [both magical and physical] damage now), it is still shielding me after I take the third hit.

Whenever we have linked mobs, we have to take care of them with Sleep, Sleep2, and Sleepga (/31BLM). However, sleep spells create large amount of hate. If a tank is PLD, we aren't in trouble but if it is either NIN or WAR who cannot cast Cure III/IV on us, we may be in trouble after they wake up.

Well, I was lucky enough to buy it at 200K. Gilgamesh server is really a mage-friendly server. I know gilfarming is boring. I sometimes fall asleep leaving him alone in the middle of Beaucedine or Delkfutt's Tower. However, it only takes me 15 hours or less to make 200K... 2 hour gilfarming everyday, in a week and I'm all set. That's not a pain.

It's just a nice-to-have spell but the higher our level goes, the more we'll find it helpful. I think LV72RDM's phalanx absorbs 24 damage and her stoneskin should absorb 320+ damage. They are better than Cure IV.

I want to further define my post: I recommend HAVING phalanx COMPLETELY! Its really a great spell! It casts quickly and really is a lifesaver. I was encouraging others to find a way to beat bcnms for it. Buy only as a last resort, but get it!

                        Hello there again
Thanks so much everyone for help!!! The link to the movie shows everything. But every BCNM40 are those mandys?? And in the end PT got ERASE spell - is it random? I wouldnt like to fight for a usefull spell for me - I need Phalanx
I amdire Sharmarali for having so much money ^^ As for me - well when I have 15.000 in my pocket - I am happy. It looks like when u advance with experience it is much more easier to earn a lot of money - especially from missions. It is sad that weaker players, cant get what they ACTUALLY need. When we have money for it - its too late already
                        Thanks everyone for everything
                        Greetings, Caspian (*@_@*)
PS: What is BCNM40 in Palborough or Glhelsba? Also mandys? What about reward? How to enter Burning Circle?

run a search! THAT'S WHAT THE FUNCTION IS FOR!

but since i've responded already, palborough mines pits you against like 15 worms and ghelsba against a bunch of evil rabbits. the mandragora one (balga's dais) is considered the easiest, so its most popular. rewards differ little from the 3, if you're after phalanx, all bcnm40s will drop it. to enter the circle, you need 40 beastmen seals. take those and trade it to a guy in port jeuno (forgot his name) who stands halfway between kazham port and san d'oria port.

And in the end PT got ERASE spell - is it random? I wouldnt like to fight for a usefull spell for me - I need Phalanx
i think u mean useless, right?

yeah they got an erase spell. it is random. erase is useful for whms and not rdms, true...but if you want phalanx, you can either get phalanx from the BCNM or get erase to sell and buy phalanx with the money and still have 200k+ left over. useless? i think not

Phalanx works wonders for melee skill ups. I am currently in Monsatic caverns fighting Descent Orcish warchief and phalanx really is helping me. I feel a bit bad for my 60 whm friend who doesn't have phalanx... gets hit every time the orc does battle dance (and he is a taru  ).

Gil farming became very easy now with phalanx on. I rarely cure myself (well my whm friend always cure me but meh.. this is not an issue) Combined with stoneskin and phalanx I have nearly 0 damage taken in the whole gil farming session.

I am helping alot these days... I helped in RSE, Missions, Quests, Advance job, etc etc and I am usually the tank. Again helps with phalanx.

HOWEVER in PT there is near to 0 use... like apple pie and others stated, mobs you face deals alot of damage (for some reason every time I get hit its a critical ). Stoneskin poofs in 2, max 3 hit with phalanx on. PT wise its not that usefull.
