applepie and other very able players have reported:

    lvl > skill > stats

i don't believe a higher mnd would affect enfeebling success rates that significantly.

that said, we'd discuss additional ability and spells affordedby both subs.

/whm has curaga and status restoration spells. curaga is nice to reduce downtime after killing nasty AE mobs when whm is out of mana.

/blm has drain, aspir, escape and warp. i can't stress the loveliness of escape and warp. escape is a party saver and warp is great time saver. aspir is nice to get some mp.

    sidenote:

like deodorant said, after whm get raise II and raise III, i doubt that a rdm or anyone else want a spot in a non whm lvling pt ^^. to put it simply, you love whm and you want a whm in a pt. thus rdm becomes a support healer in a pt with whm.

ps: for maximum bragging rights, be rdm/whm with both phalanx and erase.

There's nothing wrong with the Whm sub never has been, never will be, it is one of the best Subs to choose for a Red Mage support Job,

the other Being the Blm sub.

You cannot go wrong with either of the two. Whm will help you more from levels 14-30 for most of the reasons that have already been stated, the Blm will help you more from 41+.

The reasons the Blm sub becomes really popular at higher levels is because your whole life as a Red Mage at 41st changes. You begin spending exhorbitant amounts of Mana refreshing, enfeebling, and Hasting. And the extra mana it gives along with the constant reduction from Mana conserve (approximately 20% reduction from the tests I did) eventually comes to outweight the Divine seal + Curega.

Still the /whm sub has many contributions to support the main job of Red Mage and will never be a bad choice no matter what the level assuming you only plan on having 1 sub. And neither will the /Blm sub.

Both support the main job of Red Mage better than any other sub.

I currently hold both BLM and WHM at level 37. What I have noticed is that level up PTs typically want me to SJ BLM, but when I am doing anything with friends/LS members like NM hunting, missions, etc, they want me to SJ WHM.

I think the reason for this is that MOST mages SJ WHM in parties. So if you have a WHM in your PT, they really don't need you to SJ WHM. Odds are your third mage is already /WHM (BRD, SMN, or BLM all normally use WHM SJ). Plus, if there is not a BLM in the PT, RDM can cast the BLM only statuses like choke, raspe, drown. Since these statuses are based of attacking magic power, only BLM and RDM/BLM can effectively use those spells. Also for the magic burst, it's nice to have an INT boost (see below for a little more info on the stat differences)

However, when doing stuff with linkshell members, normally there's only 1-2 mages going. As /WHM, I have the -na series, the ba- series, and curega 1 & 2. Not to mention erase. Also, since I'm known to be something of a suicidial nut when it comes to convert, it helps that I have shirushi (umm.. think it's called Divine Seal in NA version..?) so I can heal up about 790 HP in a single shot after converting and they don't have to freak out worrying about me while my HP are still bright red. /BLM, I cure about half that, and as an elf that still leaves me in the bright red.. heh.

        As for the MP..

Everyone talks about black mage sub having so many more MP versus white mage sub. At level 72, the difference between RDM/BLM and RDM/WHM is 18 MP. That's it. 18. That's not even a cure2.

        Stats..

I'm an elf, so this info is going to be a little skewed by my low INT and high MND. But as RDM/BLM, my base INT is 61 and my base MND is 67-8, forget the exact number. As RDM/WHM, my base INT is 56 and my base MND is 73. Add to that all the junk I have to raise stats, and my MND and INT are about equal as RDM/BLM but my MND is way higher as RDM/WHM. (+40 INT and +36 MND if I use the lvl 65 +8 & +8 staff, +32 INT and +28 MND if I am using a sword, for anyone who is interested in knowing these things^^)
