I think it would be cheaper to make arrows then to buy them. Thats what I've sort of been lead to believe, it makes sense too.

You need crafting skills relating to the type of arrow you are going to craft. Wood arrows need wood working. Bone arrows need bone working. Iron arrows need like blacksmith or something.

I've never played. But this is all from post I've read from people who have played. If you look around the Ranger forum for "Arrow" threads you can find stuff.

I want to be a Ranger too.

For lv1 arrows it costs (me anyway) 3gil per arrow, x99 = 297 call it 300.
so 300 per stack of lv1 arrows.
To guild 33 of these you need 1 wind crystal, 2 chocobo feathers, 1 arrowwood lumber and 1 flint. (x3 for a full 99 stack)
Now depending on your server's econemy you can usually buy all these things cheaper than a stack, and you can of course get all these ingredients yourself (but it takes time).

However the next lots of arrows, (lv14 iron, lv24 silver, lv45 elemental)

these all require high levels of guilding so it's not really viable in later levels, unless you have these high guilding levels.

getting to these levels is not cheap, at all.

It makes it easier to sell stuff you've crafted to make money. Also, it's pretty important, in my opinion, for crafters to support each others' crafts. If somebody needs something made by me so for an ingredient for something they are crafting I gladly help them. Usually you bring the materials to them, but much of the time the materials to make the components for an item aren't that hard to find. It's a matter of breaking something down into its simplest parts.
