  • Ranger/Whitemage..?

To make a long story short, it would be far more convenient for me to use a white mage at the start of the game unilke what I first thought, but I still wish to be a ranger for main with my Mithra.

Now, is Ranger/Whitemage viable at all? I know that a rule of thumb is to subbing mages to melee classes is a bad idea. I also know it would not be an optimal combo... But would the attack power of the ranger class be enough to still do decent damage, while being able to cure during rest times/emergencies/buffs?

In other words, is the combo playable and still able to get in groups sometime (while I know full well that Rng/Thf or Rng/War will certainly out-damage me), or is it as useless as a War/Blm?

not viable unless soloing, which you basically wont be doing past lv15. the better subs for rng are war(berserk and extra physical dmg are nice), thf(boosted dex/agi but no helpful abilites), ninja(nice dex/agi boost as well as duel weilding the accuracy daggers at lv28) and sam (only if rng is 60 and sam is 30 for silent concentration).

    goodluck

Yes, you should sub whm for rng when soloing, they will help you with worms so much, Shell...anti-stone...cures...
you can take out totes (or very hard) worms very easily, something that would be hard without a whm sub

          More thinking...

It feels weird that at gamefaqs I'm the one giving advice and that here I'm the one asking for it, but here goes anyway.

Rng/Drk. Dark Knights gets multiple "Physical attack up" bonuses, and also Last Resort, where the defense loss isn't an issue with rangers. Wouldn't a Rng/Drk be preferable to a Rng/War? Or is it that the damage would be overkill, hates gets on the ranger too fast and due to both classes lack of defense (increased by last resort), the ranger would be spending more time dead on the ground than doing damage? In other words, that the Dark Knight bonus power would not be useful because it force the ranger to shoot less often?
