do the rangers abilites work on trown weapons or only with bow/gun weapons... I'm guessing it's the latter.

Yes, there are no weapon skills for thrown items,
or bomeranges i belive (ive goten it up to 40 and no ws)
Just Bow and Gun/Crossbow (guns and crossbows are in the same catagory)
