  • Kiting: What is it?

I guess this is a bit newbish on my part, but I've seen various PLD threads mention "kiting" but have never explained what it is. I did a forum search and there's no topics that I have found that explain its meaning.

What is kiting? Where does the name originate from?

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I think I found my own answer by Googling it...

"Kiting means for a person that has aggro to run around in circles. This is an effective tactic when tanks do the kiting with gravity on the mob while the mages nuke it, or rest."

Is this correct? Is there anything to elaborate on?

Yeah, 'kiting' basically just means running around with a mob chasing after you. The mob needs to be slower than you of course, or it's pointless (hence the Gravity). This is useful not only for mages to nuke or whatnot without getting hit, but also if you want to claim a hard monster you can't take on with current forces until the reinforcements arrive

Yep, and that's how the Druids, Shamans, Wizards, Bards (maybe rangers too) leveled in Everquest too

Yeah, that's basically what kiting is. Gravity helps or if your a RNG a set of strider boots and bloody cussies should put your run speed effectively high to kite really well with or without gravity then.

Its a trick you see in about every MMORPG. Anarchy Online it's possible to do that, Lineage II was one I did that on big time. Those spirit like creatures moved so slow, you could out run them so easily. Kite a good 20 - 30 of them and then nail them with an AOE spell was an easy way to get from 1 - 40 on that game.
