  • Leveling up shield skill

currently my shield skill is at an apallingly low 134 without any bonuses, how is it possible to level up my shield skill effectively.

Get to 75 and tank lots and lots of stuff. They'll catch up eventually.

One thing I did notice which was puzzling... I was helping some LS members get Papyrus (/shudders at the thought of EN), and I was getting shield skill ups rather quickly (in comparison to the usual 0.3 skillup per exp PT).

Let's say I was 60 at the time... I should have had a shield skill of 203 (haha, right). I think I had a skill of 160 (level 53 skill) when I was there. Considering that those Lich are probably level 55 or so, it seemed as if because Lich were closer in level to where my shield skill was, I tended to get skillups more often.

At first that idea may sound wild, but considering that we level off of mobs that are IT to us... we level up crafting skills on recipes that are 6-8 levels higher than our skill... we catch fish for skillups for fish that cap 6-8 levels higher than our skill, I guess this kind of just makes sense, no?

Just the other day, I went back again to EN to help people get their coffer key, so we were hunting Even and DC tomb mages/warriors (low 60s mobs). Sure enough, the skillups came rather quickly in comparison to the level 73+ mobs I fight in exp PTs.

wear af boots and shield torque. the increased evasion through items will cause your shield to activate more often which will cause your skill to raise faster. also dont be an ass, help people with Afs it will do wonders for shield skill.

          My advice?

          Leveling both Shield and Parry:
Go to monsters that are 5 levels above the lvl of your shield skill (like 105 skill would be lvl 34, and therefore go fight mobs that are 40 or so).

          Equip as much +VIT gear.
          Equip as much -Evasion gear.
          Equip as much -AGI gear.
Use Monk as subjob (adds VIT and has less AGI than WAR).

          For Shield:
(add) Do not use a weapon (sword). Fight without.
          or
          For Parry:
(add) Do not use a shield. Fight without.

All these steps are to take away from the other methods of avoiding hits which take away from the possibilities of Shield and Parry being executed.

          See my logic?

          Melee:
          43 Monk; 25 Warrior; 20 Theif; 10 Dragoon; 11 Dark Knight; 7 Ninja.

          Mage:
55 Red Mage; 32 Black Mage; 27 White Mage.

I notice that with less evasion the shield will be more likely to trigger than the other way around. If you are more likely to evade, then you will evade. If you are not evading, other skills have a chance of triggering...

I got to agree with modnar, actually if you dig up the old threads posted probably 9 or 10 months ago I say much of the similar thing. Also what LionhartPLD said is the reverse method to have skill raise decently in a party (however the skill has to already be close enough to what's needed for the +skill items to put it in the proper range).

It takes forever, I've been tanking non stop etc, and I'm still not capped. Like at 250 now, but with +shield skill so probably around 240.
                Screw this game.
