Luckily it's very simple. Provoke every 30 seconds at least 3 times in a row and then apply as needed. Cure a few times and throw down a shield bash when you can to snag some extra hate. Another important factor is hitting the mob. Try to participate in the skillchains if you can and hopefully be the ender that way you can build hate from the damage.

Building it simple, keeping it also simple. You just have to learn when to use the tools you have. If you have voke ready and you see a big cure from the whm or nuke fromt he blm etc, do it just a second before so that the mob wont turn even the slightest. Also at the beginning of the fight, make sure the whm lets you heal yourself for a little while. Nothing bothers me more than a double cure and wasted mp.

Later on when you get sentinel, alternate that and shield bash so that you always have an extra hate tool handy. Holding hate before 30 is boring imo but everytime you get a new ability or spell it makes things so much more fun. Most of it is just experience, and people are generally forgiving at the earlier levels so you have plenty of time to get the feel for it.

But things change once you get Flash when you get that you provoke then throw a flash spell then wait till your hp is yellow and throw a cure III your hate should be stuck on you. From there I just throw some cure II's at myself and at other people. Be sure to have Defender and Sential on at times.

I myself do no particpate in Skillchans anymore because I just do 300% Spitirits within and bam I can do at least 400 to a IT+ mob plus you rest so your tp will go down from some time.

Resting between fights is key as well. I agree with Rico on the non-participating w/ most Skillchains until you group with a bard in the 30s or have a rdm casting refresh on you later levels. If you really want to be in a skillchain, have at least three WS going off that can link together: you as pld -> 1st melee -> 2nd melee. The real meat/power of the skillchain will be the one from 1st melee -> 2nd melee. This way, you won't interrupt the skillchain at all, and they could technically go without you. Your MP is much more important in keeping hate than some people think.

Later on though, I hear that people do want you for skillchains, especially when you learn Savage Blade and can help with Light renkeis. Until then though, I use WS as an extra hate gaining ability as well. No flash for me yet, but I'll get there soon.

For more information, read mr.rugal's pld guide for his hypothesis on different kinds of hate.

there is much you can do to make hate an keep it. but if other pt members dont help out. or put limits on what they can, a cant do. makes all the difference in the world. the little things you can do would be as follow.

            1. make sure you are the highest lvl out of the melee. i have noticed pld have a little bit tougher time holding hate, when the melee class are a lvl or 2 higher.

            2. be the first to make a connection with a mob before or after the provoke. a hit a weapon skill, magic. a nice combo i saw was flash > voke. an the pld kept hate very well after that.

            3. voke when you got it. you wont be hitting the hardest. so by voking you keep the mob on you more,

things you can ask for later on.. HASTE. this speeds your atks up, speeds your cast up. an is a big plus. the reason is. you are doing so much more towards the mob. then say a drk with a 528 delayed weapon would. another thing you can ask for if capable. is a sa/ta onto you. the mob will think you have done this mass amount of damage on him, an go after you. then when you hit provoke. it is another great way to maintain hate..

Timing is also very important. For example, if u know ur blm is gonna MB with his best spell, u may wanna do a big cure (or flash/voke) right after he lands his spell just to show how good u are in holding hate

I wouldnt suggest voking every 30secs for all levels. For low levels that is probably fine but once u get to higher level u get more tools and should only use provoke as the last resort. For example, after lv33 and when u have a thf in your pt, u dont wanna voke every 30secs so that when you guys are gonna do a renkei (probably something > fuidama + viper bite) the other melee can in fact turn the mob so that the thf can fuidama on u. Then u throw in a voke and I bet it'll stick to u for the rest of the fight

Also, many players have overlooked the importance of having a decent amount of mana as many of them think HP and VIT are the two most important stat for pld yet this is not the case
Having a big mana pool meaning that u can hold hate better, protect the pt longer and chain mobs faster :D

lol i have never seen a pld grab hate right back after a blm uses acient magic for a mb burst. a lot of times it takes me a provoke > last resort > souleater. an a hit or 2 to get mob back on me. while the pld has already flashed > provoke > cure 3 to blm. with no luck..

as for magic. i dont see pld wearing much mp gear. its all on def, vit, evasion gear. as will many pld say or do.. plus later on in lvls your party will have a brd or rdm. ask for refreshs. an you will get them. get near a mage when bard plays mages ballard.

It's true that it gets tricky to hold the hate at lv 50ish when the blm MB with ancient magics, and that is w/o having a thf tricking on the pld. It really depends how early does the MB occur during the fight. At later level, it becomes (much) easier and it's common that blm does over 1k damge with MB and pld doesn't lose hate from that.

I'm not saying plds should only go for mana gear of cuz It's all about a good balance of VIT and mana gears. Also, regening 3mana/tick is simply not enough for a good pld. Two cure3 already consumes almost 100 mana, not to mention cure4... So having a big mana pool helps chaining mobs a lot.

One of the best pld i've played with is an elvaan with comparable amount of mana of a taru pld. It's just interesting to see how many ppl fail to see the importance of having a big mana pool

Btw, my main job is blm so I'm pretty sensitive to how well a tank can hold the hate.

Have haste cast on PLD is very helpful, with bard songs and haste I hardly miss and land more hits mean more hate output also for more renkei chains. Until you hit 65 Spirit Within is good for ws damage, after 65 people will ask us PLD to do darkness chain with Swift Blade and light chain later with Savage Blade. Getting hate back after BLM cast ancient magic is not hard just a matter how much hate you build so far and lost before the BLM decides to nuke which usually its at the end for the killing blow. I do see BLM cast Tornado, Freeze, Flare or Flood one of these halfway throught out of the battle which is fine just never at begining of a battle.

If you build enough hate you can even hold out against WHM's benediction too. I've experience that kinda of emergecy before and the WHM thought it was a glitch in the game.

i'm having trouble holding hate in a pt w/o a support type (brd|rdm) or a thf to fui with.

The whm's i've been playing with usually heal me tilli'm almost full making my cures do very little and gaining little hate.. then the other melee's dish out all they have.

in situations like this, what's the most effective way to regain hate? by spamming c3's i lose a tonne of mp before the next fight

btw i'm in the mid 40's now.

at low lvls buy some selbina milks in stack of 12. not only do they give hate but by downing one of these milks they add a 1 hp per tick regen, great to do inbetween vokes if need be. they dont cost tooo much but it should get you through till you get better hate methods.

Tell them to ease up, its as simple as that. I honestly do mostly cure IIs and only cure IIIs if i'm gettin' low.
