Okay, before I'm flamed for being a "nub" lemme tell you, I got this game like two weeks ago, I AM a newb mmk? Yeah so I've seen Paladins and I'd like to be one. I decided to be Elvaan but I was wondering. Should I start a WAR or what? And what should I sub? Which main and subjob should I use before I become a Pally. This is very annoying to you other players I'm sure, but I'm just a curious little newbie. I'd really appreciate the help. Kthxbai.

well the typical way to do it is start with war, get it to 18, get your subjob, level monk to at least 15. low level monk can tank specialyl with provoke. once you hit 15 with monk, take war up to 30, then go with pally from the beginning all over agian.

My suggestion (wish I dont this myself) is level Monk to 18, do subjob quest, switch to War/Monk and level to 37.
Then do the Paladin quest and switch to Paladin/War. This way you don't have to switch back to War when you get your Paladin over 61, which I have to do, as my War is only 31.

The path doesn't matter as long if you have a fully leveled sup (Monk or Thief) and take Warrior to 30, thats all you need to do.Blm.75 - Whm.56 - Mnk.58 - Rdm.48 - Nin.37 - War.37 - Drk.37

Technically you don't need to start with leveling warrior to level 30. However, since you will need to level warrior to be your subjob for paladin eventually anyways, it's a good idea to just get it out of the way. You can accept the paladin quest with any job to level 30, but I seriously wish I had just taken warrior to level 37 and forgotten about it instead of stopping at level 30 to start paladin, since I recently had to buy a bunch of level 30 gear so I could level my newly-gimp warrior subjob. -_-;;
Some other bonuses of leveling warrior to level 30 instead of another job is that you will undoubtedly have learned at least a little about how to tank and can also train skills that will benefit you as paladin as well (such as sword and shield skill). Having your sword, evasion, and shield skill maxed until around level 30 paladin is actually quite nice. ^^Rhayn ~ Windurst Rank 8

While its nice to use sword and shield while lvling WAR so you can build some skill on them, I think its a lot better to use Great Axe and Great Sword as a WAR. Shield Break is god sent, its really useful even around lvl 30.
Also having your GS skill ~100 will help you once you do Skill up PT's. GS is best one to farm now that Penta TP is 'nerfed'.PLD 72 - WAR 35 - NIN 13 -THF 15

Sure, do GS if you're talking farming. But if you are tanking. As WAR it should be Axe with Shield and PLD it should be Sword and Shield. Axe is WAR's A weapon and Sword is PLD's A+ weapon. Also, you need that extra defense for tanking.
But if you are farming, GS or GA is HIGHLY recomended.`\~*~/`Life is a Dream, Death is the Alarm Clock`\~*~/`

sword/shield combo better than g.axe or g.sword
bottom line, is for a war, a sword and shield combo is always a better idea than a great axe or great sword....it's common sense...especially if you're going to be a pld in the end anyway.
at my lvl's out in qufim and what not i ALWAYS out play any war's using a g.axe with my combo (which is currently the short sword and tropical shield) I just dont see why a SLOW delay on a weapon that's not really meant for a defensive character in the first place would be a better choice than a weapon that is quick, holds the hate because of this, and WILL do more dmg in the long run...plus the added bonus of using a shield to block attacks...
it's not argument...no debate...sword and shield combo is always better for a warrior than a g.axe or g.sword

Okay Lone...
1. Most WARs need a Great Axe to hold hate with since they lack the cures that PLDs use to hold hate which is why they can afford to go with the weaker Sword/Shield combo.
2. Please don't act like there is nothing about using a Great Axe for hate control. On the first page of the WAR forum there were 3 threads that I counted that talked about using a Great Axe for tanking. One of which you contributed to (though admittedly not in favor of Great Axe).
3. If swords can out damage Great Axes then why aren't more WARs and other damage dealers for that matter flocking to 1h swords? The last WAR i partied with was either 45 or 46.. forgot which. He used a Great Axe throughout the party and held hate fine with the help of the THF.
4. Why rely on a C+ shield skill and a B sword skill when you can use an A+ Great Axe skill?Vermillion Cloak O ^^

it's not a matter of that...
it has something to do with holding the attention of an enemy...
dont get me wrong im not ARGUING, just debating, the fact of the matter is any ff vet knows that ANY combo of equip can work well as long as u know how to play, but since we're on the topic here's the real point:
I have recently played in the same party as many war's using the g.axe while I was using the short sword/tropical shield combo and here's what i discovered:
comparing myself (war22/mnk11) Elvaan male and others (war22/mnk11) many of which were galkan , I was taking a swing 3-4 times for every one swing the g.axe wielder took. When the g.axe connected the avg dmg it dealt was around 11, and my avg dmg was around 9...and when the enemy did turn to me i blocked the attack with my shield about 15 % of the time. So, the bottom line here was i was doing 30-40 points of dmg for every 11-22 the g.axe wielder did, plus since i was the one hitting the monster constantly (with even better delay than straight mnks in the party) I held the hate better. Ask any good pld about it...a better delay = more hate. It's again, common sense...just like in baseball...who's the oppossing team worried about, the batter who hits 40 HR's a season, all of which BARELY go over the wall, or the batter who hits 8 HR all of which went for 525 feet?

I call bullshit on Great Axe hitting for 11, unless their Gaxe skill is underleveled.
There's also the WS of Gaxe. Shield Break is the best thing when there is no brd.
Also, why use a sword + shield when you can go axe+shield? I do 20-30 damage with each axe swing, and the delay isn't that much higher then sword. Weapon + shield is better for tanking, but a sword on a WAR is horrible. Switch to axe + shield and watch the damage flow.
There's also the WS of Axe. I reguraly doing 100+ damage with Raging Axe. Sword WS's doing around 70 if you're lucky.
Also Lone, you're forgetting about double attack. It is random, but it happens quite often. A double attack on a Great Axe will completely destroy a double attack on a sword/axe.
Dual wielding axes and having it go off on both hits is very nice though, good 80-120 damage right there. :spin:JohNNYOriginally posted by Luminaire

Sword isn't really all that awful until post 30; regardless, do not expect an invite from me unless we are in dunes. Play a warrior like a warrior, don't use it as a mule to level your WS for another job."Nihilistic sky, inhale magic power...Bizen Boat!"

You can't really compare melee jobs/weapon usage all to well in the early levels. The difference is so small its not even worth fussing over."We're all stupid, so lets go adventure in our ignorance together!"
