just wonderin, why do some PLDs use spears?

PLD use spears so they can gil farm with Penta Thrust. If they're using it for leveling, they're insane and should be one-shotted XD

Spears are for farming... or for raising skill for when you decide to try Dragoon.

They are NOT for grouping.

There is a I guess "bug" that allows a certain spear to be equipped with a shield... some screenshots were taken of this and some debate over if it would be valuable in combat was had.

With a spear you don't hit very often due to the lower skill against IT mobs.

However... against Too weak to be worthwhile mobs while gil farming the spear will hit very often... and the weapon skill pentathrust is very nice... this is why some people occasionally use spear.

Hell I can kill Ochu in Rolanberry at lvl 52 with 92 dagger skill (keep in mind my sword skill is 160+ at 52) Although Ochu don't drop much gil (occasional dodge headband is nice) it shows that even a really crappy lvl 28 dagger that just gives my RNG +ranged accuracy and has crappy dmg and delay that I am not very skilled with can be a decent weapon when farming low end monsters.... this is the same concept behind the Spear... except it looks cooler... and it does more dmg.. and the weapon skill is actually useful.

Problem is... Spears, Great Swords, Great Axes, Great Katana, and Scythe all have large delays.... This makes it a Pain in the butt to gain skill on them. The dagger I was using had a delay of like 195... and if I was smart I would have subbed NIN so I could've equipped a 2nd one for even faster gain.... my great sword skill drives me nuts to skill up... it's still sitting at 101 even though I have use for 150+ in that skill and only use for 83 points of dagger (PLD don't use daggers in combat or solo... it's not ideal for anything.. and RNG equips the dagger but will probably never use it (rng cap is 83 I mentioned) because if we solo for gil we will use the PLD obviously... I was just bored)

P.S. Here is an excellent Weapon skill cap chat and which skills are gained at which lvls by which classes etc... it is very informative. Obviously the 2 of you above already know this because you both knew PLD suck with Spear... but I am sure there is more info to be gained from this site for both of you. This was fixed in a recent patch. You can no longer hold polearm with shield.

Anyways, I used polearm for Pentathrust gilfarming at mid levels. However at high levels, it becomes relatively useless. You start doing the same damage with 1h sword as the slower polearm attacks (due to MUCH higher weapon skill rating in 1hs compared to polearm, especially as you level higher and higher), and Vorpal is a relatively decent multihit WS for 1hs (not as good as penta due to less TP return, but the overall DPS of 1hs will eventually surpass polearm due to PLD's horrible skill rating with polearm).

PLD used to use Spears in leveling parties back when lvl 60 was the cap, and in Davoi or MonasticCav for leveling at 57-60. of course, it still was rare to use a Spear over a Great Sword, as the reason for its usage was to do a Distortion renkei, thus Power Slush was all we needed. yet, Pentathrust had a Transfixion attribute back then, and for this reason, some PLD's used Spears to use Penta, if their GS skills were too low, but still asked for Transfixion WS.

these days, as others mentioned, Spears r only for farming, but there once was the time when we were asked for it in leveling parties. just a history class.
