Any tips you guys could give me? I'm still a ways away from PLD but I'd like to be prepared when I finally get it. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.
Use a 1H sowrd + shield, you have a A+ in shield for a reason. 2H sowrd almost cripples a PLD.
You need your cures to maintain aggro. communicate with your healers if you need them to slow down and give you a chance to cure yourself.
Your MP is argubly more important then your TP. rest up between fights to get your MP back. It's ok if you cannot participate in skill chains, but it hurts when you can't hold aggro. Stand up as soon as you have full MP though, no need to over heal and loose more TP than you have to.
Keep your armors up to date. While you are a mage you can let your armos go a bit in favour of spells, but to a paladin, having the best armor you can get is essential.
Your sword is important to. While your attacks maybe insignificant compared to that of the damage dealers, you do get more aggro from them. Get the accuracy+ ones if you can.
Use def and vit food. things like crey fish and fish kabob can make you even sturdier.
Juice helps. Although you have more MP as Taru your MP regen rate is still the same as the others. Juice can help you get those MP's back when you just have to have them.
Practice shield bashing those annoying monster specials. If you can stop a goblin from throwing his bomb, you will be the hero of yoru group. Note that suicide bomb cannot be stopped.
Use your skills to get aggro once you get them. Provoke, Cure, Shield Bash, Sentinal, Flash.... etc. Know them all, because some of them may not yet be ready when you need the aggro.
Invincibility grabs a large amount of aggro. When all your alternative has run out and you just have to get aggro back NOW, use your 2hr.
Oh, and lastly, as a Taru, HP is a problem when you go up and fight monsters with killer WS. Look for +HP items to prevent the sudden taru death syndrome.
Start with warrior as ur main job and use sword and shield all the way. I would also recommend using a 1h axe too. I maxed both b/c I switch weapons to better fit the the <skill chain>
Once u get a subjob, I would recommend lvling mnk or thf to lvl 15 and then switch back to warrior til 30+. If you want to save the trouble. I would say get ur pld job @ lvl 30 war and then lvl both of them. When u reach lvl 37 warrior, then put all your time and effort into paladin.
I stopped @ lvl 30 warrior, so now I have to go back and continue lvling until 37. Its a pain in the rear, trying to go back to lower lvl character.
Whats important to pld:
1. Equipment. U always want the best equipment possible. Although u can get away with sub par equipment @ lower lvl such as 24 and below. But once u reach that point. I would recomment u getting the best armor and accessories possible.
2. Farm lots of gils. B/C being a pld or any job in fact, u want to use food. For lower lvl pld there are many choices that will help u raise defense or vit+. crayfish, tortilla and such.
3. Carry juice on u. Before u get a rdm @ lvl 41 that can refresh ur mp, its very important that Pld uses juice to help regen MP during lvling or else u will encounter lots of down time and not capable of joining <skill Chain> (If u have a bard also, then that will help out the situation, b/c bard can regen mp for u as well)
4. At lower lvl b4 flash or anything fancy comes in hand. Pld's should use provoke when possible, and heal ur self during the interval time, and also shield bash enemy when mages are over casting.
5. Curing: only use cure when u or teammates aren't full hp. U don't gain much hate if u are curing someone that has full HP. Also, to make sure u don't get interrupted during cure, set a macro and then use cure right as the mob hits u. This will give u enough time to cast cure b4 the next atk. (unless the mob can double atk, then u'll need to find a better timing for the mob)
6. Shield bash: A very useful job ability @ any given lvl for pld. As for gob's bomb toss. Most of the time it'll take a few to perform bomb toss. Once u see it coming, then use macro for shield bash. Its not a 100% stop, but if u practice enough, u can save your ptys from a very dangerous situation.
7. Team work: Pld's are too often to be assumed that they should keep hate all by themselves. Wrong!! Let ur teamates know that its a team effort to make sure that pld's keep hate well. Some mages will start bombing the mob or using high cure's on teammates b4 Pld's have a chance to gain enough hate. Inform them the facts, and let them know to slow down a bit. Without great team work, not even the best plds can keep hate well.
8. Pld's best hate grabber. 2-hour job ability <invinsible> This is ur specialty to save not only urself but your teammates as well. When encounter a situation where ur team can not handle. Use it!!
This will grab all the hate from the mob and then allow u and ur teammates to zone to a safe place. U have 30 secs to run for ur life or even better run the opposite direction and give ur teammates more time.
Being a Pld, u have to realize that U out of everyone have the highest chance of dying. Don't be afraid of it. Everything u lose can be gain back later on plus u will be recognized by others that u are a "good player" that fits a good job.
9. Benediction: Whm's special 2 hour. This is a death call for Whm, but luckly Pld's can save them. Use invinsible right after Whm uses Benediction. U will not only have full hp to fight the mob but U will also grab the hate from whm and save his life.
This should be enough for u to get started on. Just few things that will help u along the way.

What kedo1 said about dying is true. At low to mid levels the exp you lose from a death isn't really very much at all (think a few hundred is a lot, wait till you lose 4k exp a death). Exp is disposable, as a pld you should have a slightly easier time getting a pt unless your server is abnormally crowded with tanks on seek. So build up a reputation and prove yourself early on, it might help you with parties when you get higher. Some plds got laughed off the game and server because they didn't bother to tank properly, got a bad rep which stuck to them so long and so badly that they gave up.
Make sure you do your homework, know how hate flows, which stats are important for you, equipment and strategy etc (a lot of this can be found in imac2much's FAQ in this forum).
