  • Need Advice: PT with Monk

I'm currently lv 50 PLD helping my LS pt get their Papyrus.
We recently recruited a monk in our LS and he is a great fighter, however, I start to notice that I was able to keep less and less hate on me. What I would hope to receive from the posters here are some of the ways we, the party, could do to help me keep hate.

My Current equipment is as follows:
    -Tactician Magician Espadon
    -T.K. Army Shield
    -Iron Musketeer set (Head-to-feet)
    -Drone Earrings x2
    -Electrum Earringx2
    -Wolf Mantle
    -Life Belt

I am a Galkan by the way.

My PT set up is as follows:
    -PLD/WAR
    -WAR/MNK
    -WHM/BLM
    -THF/WAR
    -RDM/BLM
    -MNK/WAR

I am usually able to keep hate early during the battle with the help of THF's SA/TA while Provoke, Flash, Sentinel/Shield Bash, and Cures 2/3 thrown in, even after the monk does Raging Fist, but a short time after he does his Raging Fist the hate goes to him and it's very difficult to keep it right after that. I'm usually forced to cover him.

Any help and advice will be much appreciated.

Monks do extra damage to bones (75% I think, don't quote me there though) which is probably why you're losing aggro.
It sounds like your equipment is up to date and I'm assuming you're doing the provoke/flash/cure/sentinel/shield bash series correctly. If that is the case, there's not much you can do.
If you party with a thief, my advice would be to have the monk stand in fron of you so that when he uses Raging Fists the mob turns around and the thief can fuidama and transfer the hate to you. If you have been stacking hate, this should be enough to get the mob to face you again. Another thing I do is when I notice the renkei is about to start I hold my provoke/flash for a few seconds and use them after the mob faces away from me.

I see, thanks for the advice. I was only slightly worried since from what I gathered Hi level party will fight mostly bones, although I don't remember where the place is.

Yes Monks (well hand to hand weapons) do a lot more damage to undead. So the mnks good damage just got turned to god like damage (for example) on those undead. So you just have to expect to lose aggro to them now and then.

One thing you can do is have your monk stand behind you. That way when he starts getting beat on, you can just use cover on him easly. It'll soften the blows their tissue armor takes.
If you define cowardice as running away at the first sign of danger, screaming and tripping and begging for the enemy no not see you. Then yes, Mr. Braveman, I guess I'm a coward

Hehe, if you really want to lose that hate, do a red lotus for him to skillchain raging fists off of...depending on the length of the skillchain leading up to it, could easily be 500-600 damage (on bones) + a nearly equal amount of skillchain damage (4 WS chain ending in a level 2 effect gives you skillchain damage equal to WS damage, and I think 50% increased damage for MB).

It can be tough to keep hate off the monk during the levels they use primarily raging fists (41-59, as they are generally expected to provide howling fist at 60 for the thf to distortion skillchain off, and dragon kick at 65 to finish level 3 skillchain). 5 hits (potentially more with double attack from sub), especially when stacked with food + berserk + boost, with a nice 30% tp return turns a monk into a machine.

Level 51 pld in my LS says his strategy is to (of course) stack provokes, usually cast 2-3 cure 3s per fight (assuming refresh from rdm is up always), and alternate between using sentinel and shield bash every other fight, so that he always has one or the other to use every battle. As for Flash, he uses it at the start of the battle, then saves it to use if he loses aggro (rarely happens, according to him ^^).

I think the key is to be active and not reactive in holding your hate...should never be a stretch of battle longer than 30 seconds that you aren't doing something specifically for the purpose of holding hate, be it provoke, cure 3, flash, sentinel, or shield bash. If you wait till you lose hate to start working on getting more hate, you've already got that much further to go than if you were working on it all along.

At any rate, it's going to be tough getting aggro off a raging fists monk, especially against bones. I experience the same situation myself, as a monk, in crawler's nest, that the soldier will ALWAYS turn on me after raging fists (even on a 3-hitter), and although the pld usually can get it back, he eventually loses it again. That was without a thf though...but then again, thf vs. bones = lower damage than usual, so you have more than one thing working against you when fighting bones monsters.

If you're with a class that you know can steal aggro for them, just let them know to stand behind you so you can cover them. It helps, since if it takes you awhile to get that hate back, least you're getting hit.. and not them.

If they're smart, they should do normally.. unless they're working with a Thf. If they get beat on a lot, you can always ask them if they don't mind being behind you. Rangers normally do this when I group with them.
