Hmm I can't seem to post this in the general forum...Oh well :p
I've noticed a lot of ppl wanting to know how to control hate on a mob. There's a lot of factors that contribute to hate.
1. Your lvl
2. Your Charisma
3. Your job
4. Elemental and weapon weakness to the mob
5. Time
6. The mobs lvl
7. Damage given(the mob and you)
8. Healing
9. Rate of hits and healing
Most ppl understand these factors and probably know how to impliment them. But I'll explain a little of each.
1. Your lvl. The higher your lvl, of course more damage or healing ability you'll have. Also your Charisma is greater too. But what you don't see is a stat that's not in the status menu. It's "Hate" Every job has a natural lvl of "Hate" Some better than others. Warriors have the most amount of natural hate. Of course Hate can be increased or decrease depending on your gear/stats. Rangers have the least hate. So it's best for the tank to be the highest lvl, and not the WHM. >,,<
2. Charisma. Even though it's called "Hate", your charm makes those mobs want to hurt you :p Paladins have tons of Charisma. Even if the PLD is 2 lvl lower lvl than another tank, the mob will want to go to the PLD. Charisma is a huge factor on how well you can provoke.
3. Like stated before, each job has their natural lvl of hate.
4. Elemental/weapon weakness. Each mob has a weakness to a elemental damage and weapon. You'll get some extra hate by doing something they are weak to.
5. Time. As time passes while fighting a mob, depending on what's happening to the mob by the players, it's hate lvl will build or decrease to each player. If a BLM did 600 damage to the mob, an amout of hate will go to that BLM. But if that BLM doesn't do anymore damage, the hate will decrease. But if the BLM keeps on nuking the mob, the hate will increase, or stack per say. Once that hate lvl surpasses someone else, the mob will go after the BLM.
6. Mob lvl. The higher the lvl a mob is, less effective provoke is. Provoke in itself causes hate, but not enough to surpass the hate already caused by damage or healing. This is where creating a lot of damage or healing by the main tank and continuously stacking provoke every 30secs will help to ensure she/he always has more hate built on them and not have hate decease.
7. Obviously when you do damage, hate is obtained. The greater damage is done, higher the hate. As for the the mob doing damage you, it's not about how much damage it caused, but how close you are to death. When you're HP is orange to red, the hate is increased on you. And if you heal yourself....um I hope you have another healer in your PT :p There's enough AI in those mobs to let them know you're about to die and they want to kill you :p
8. Healing. PPL think healing causes more hate than damage. Actually they are equal. If a WHM did 100 hp heal and a melee did 100 damage, the same amount of hate is given to each player for those numbers. But it's not that simple. You have to add in all the other factors that effect hate. Melee have naturally more hate, but if the WHM has higher charisma and is higher lvl, the aggro will go to the WHM.
9. Rate of hits and healing. As stated before, hate decreases as time passes and nothing is being done to the mob by that player. The faster you hit or heal, will lesson the amount of hate is lost to you. This is why a Monk doing 100 fists gets aggroed compared to a BLM doing Mana font on the same mob. Even though the BLM is doing more damage in total, the hate is higher with the Monk due to the fact they basically have no decrease in hate. The delay in magic casting is enough to have the Monk surpass the amount of hate the BLM has.
It's all about the numbers. Others have posted on how to be a good tank already. I just wanted to explain the whys :p
