Anybody ever got creative with Paladin and use it as something other than a tank? I know what they are there for, but so is Dragoon. And Dragoon theif is a bad ass combo because no one thought of it and it goes against the commonly stated mandate.

I'm sure there are advantages to drg/thf, but "uniqueness" doesn't exactly sell me on a job/subjob combination.
You could make a whm/war.....but what would be the point....you'd be the only one on the server, but does that make it a good combo?
Picking opposing or non beneficial subclasses for your job may result in some amusement at being different for a while, but the pain will follow after about lvl 20 (or sooner) while you are sitting waiting for a pt invite for days due to no one liking your creativity.
PLD's have a role, and if we fail at our role, more than likely people will die. So I would advise to stick with the basics on this job and be unique with the ones that won't result in the death of pt members.Name: Susano

This is exactly how I feel about the 'anti-cookie cutter/rebel against the norm' mentality of some people these days. You really think that somehow you are going to make a strange combo work all of a sudden when no one else was able to for the year or two the game has been out? If you think it's because no one is trying them, you are fooling yourself.Originally posted by Awntawn
When levelling, you want to be efficient. Levelling up isn't a place to have fun. I, personally, have been levelling up for almost 1 and a half years and I just want to get it over with so that I can finally have fun doing other stuff. You'll all understand too, after you get enough of it, how tedious the whole process can be. Not everyone has countless hours to throw away at will in front of their computer... Some people only have a small amount of time that they are allowed to spend, and the last thing they need is for this special time that means a lot to them to be wasted by some inconsiderate ass who is really just being stubborn for no reason.
And don't go bitching about how I'm trying to prevent you from having fun with our gay cookie cutters. Chances are, I'm never going to see you in the game ever; it makes no difference to me what you do. I'm just trying to inform you of what 99.999999999999% of the players of the game agree on. Besides, you're not trying to have fun; you're just being stubborn and don't like the way things are. The more the facts point in the direction that there is right way to play the game, the more you hate it. What's wrong with just agreeing with people for crying out loud? If you don't like this game or the way things work in it, play another one. No one's forcing you to play FFXI.
And for the record... everything has been tried before. What works now is what's survived. What doesn't work, it goes into a process like this:
Tester: Nope, doesn't work. Not good.
Person who just doesn't like agreeing with people: SCREW YOU AND YOUR COOKIE CUTTERS
DRG/THF has been thought of a lot o_o I don't know where you think that no one's tried it.... From what I hear Pentathrust doesn't stack with yokodama/fuidama, so this combo isn't as useful as some people think. You have to remember that a sub-THF's sneak attack is a LOT weaker than a main-THF's sneak attack. As an example, a main THF can do 3-8x more damage with SA, a sub-THF can do about 1.5x more damage with SA. It's the same as one critical, really. On the whole, /war with Berserk is going to have more DPS and /sam at level 60 with meditation is going to do even more DPS. At level 60 DRG/THF can yokodama/fuidama to transfer hate, but honestly a DRK/THF or just a THF will do this much better (from what I read, Guillotine stacks with fui even though penta doesn't).
If you are just saying you want to be different from everyone, then have fun. I still don't understand the reason why some people just HAVE to care so much about what other people play as or do... I say play smart, be yourself, and do what's best for you. This does not automatically mean 'DONT DO WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING!' If you want to be an effective member of a PT, then you'll know what to do.
If you make a non-tank PLD in teams past 30, people will either kick you immediately, or if they're nicer, they'll just wish they never invited you. You'll do contribute nothing to the group (as you have very few useful spells and you'll do less damage than just about any other melee class), and basically just be an EXP leech.
If you want to sacrifice effectiveness for 'raging against the status quo', then go for it. I just feel sorry for your PT unless they're your good friends and will put up with you.I believe in karma. Anyone I treat badly probably deserved it.

Good point but not all true. Everything hasn't been tried. If so there wouldn't be a point in the debate. It would be FAQ. Everything would be common knowledge. And there are plenty of circumstances to try new things in. Common knowledge isn't always subject to criticism, but when it creates a kind of disclosure to new ideas, it becomes a target. I have no doubt that you are right. You obviously know better than me but I do believe that the tone in the forum should be a little more respectful. Don't be afraid of everything new.

Everything has been tried is the point. The game has been out for close to two years now I believe. Only reason why there even is a debate is because of all the new NA players who think they can find some secret combo that no-one else in the free world has thought of yet. Ain't going to happen. If you define cowardice as running away at the first sign of danger, screaming and tripping and begging for the enemy no not see you. Then yes, Mr. Braveman, I guess I'm a coward
"Well I calculated the odds of this succeeding versus doing something incredabily stupid, and... I decided to go ahead anyway."
