  • Heading to Pal - Sub Question

    Hello All,

I recently got my Subjob quest completed thanks to some crazy luck on the rolls, so I've been levelling up Monk (I'm an 18 War as main). Okay, so I've heard Monk is the best way to go if I want to be a good tank in my 20s (I like Tanking, hence wanting to be Paladin at 30), plus I like the idea of Counter and more HP.

Ok so here's the question, how hard is the 30 Paladin quest? Because I'm thinking of only levelling up Monk to somewhere around 12-14 rather than 15 if the Paladin quest is easily doable at 30. However if the Paladin quest isn't easy, and you foresee me spending lots of time at 30-35 getting the Pally quest complete, then maybe the extra level of Monk would be helpful as I spend the time from 30-35 taking advantage of being /15 Monk.

So what do you all think? What's the right level to raise Monk to? Is it best to be lazy/quick and just hit 10 for Counter and head back to getting 30 asap so I can solo the quest? Or is the quest a toughie and I'll need a lot of friends or have to be high 30s to solo it, and thus I should get Monk to 15 for Evade and HP boost.

Thanks for your help, and I look forward to joining the Pally community one day soon

I recommend you get to 15 to be safe than sorry, so if anything happens you don't have to go back and level monk again. Level 10-15 are not that hard to get, and might save you time later.

The pally quest is relatively easy. Just some notes from my own experience with the quest using a 30war/15mnk... (assuming you know the quest already)

    1) The Revival Tree Root can be gotten really easily (I even chanced upon one in Ronfaure - read: noob area - fighting a tainted hound). No biggie there. If you're levelling to 30 in Batallia you might even get them as a drop from Mauthe Doogs while exping, saves you time.

    2) There isn't anything dangerous about ordelle's caves except the shriekers that aggro near the waterfall place.. I soloed one with my 30 war, although I remember using Mighty Strikes for fear of delevelling and made it out with.. 12 hp. o.O;; Thankfully no poison. (imagine scenario without 15 monk sub, although this could just be for my case)

    3) You have 3 options:
    a) bribe a whm or have a whm friend invisi/sneak you to the well.
    b) blow out your gil on oils and powders for invisi/sneak effect and sneak by yourself to the well.
    c) go on a suicide run like Cade described in another post... dash through everything, grab the item, and prepare to die.
You mentioned soloing, so you either need to be lucky, or you need that extra hp and evasion.

So it's not -that- difficult... but you still need to luck out sometimes, and having a properly levelled sub may help. I'm quite sure there are plds out there who have done it without a 15 mnk.

I got by with just 10 monk as a sub until getting 30 warrior. Going to 15 monk is probably the "right" answer but I didn't bother. The Paladin quest can be done at 30. It can actually be finished at 29 if you end up dying doing the Davoi run and loosing your level, like what happend to me.

At level 30 you can run straight to the pool in Ordelle Caves without being attacked if you go the right way. If you wander around you'll find some aggressive creatures, but if you go right then right again, get what you need and leave you'll be fine. The Davoi run isn't exactly easy though, so be prepared to potentially die a few times.

About half the plds I know (actually more than that) have their wars at 29 (including myself) because of Davoi. <.<;; I even had an exp buffer, and managed to get a raise the first time round. Damn those orcs.

Like Pilsbane said, prepare to die a few times. If you really want to keep your lvl 30 war, get some good exp into it.

Once you do the sub-job quest you can change it around as much as you want right? Like, if you have warrior/monk you can just switch it to paladin/warrior without doing the subjob quest again?

OK listen up if you like to be a good tank you need to sub WAR for your PAL which is the best sub for PAL by the way. I hate to break it to you but what good is a PAL with high def. if it can't get the enemies attention using provokes. All the parties would expect you to be able to provoke but if you can't you will get kicked out for sure. Sorry

Blacktiger, I don't think anyone in this thread was suggesting a non-warrior sub for paladin. Talisien was talking about monk as a subjob for warrior until he could be a paladin, then he'd use warrior as a sub. I agree with you that warrior is the best sub for paladin and I wouldn't tell anyone otherwise.

lol Kagi, soooo true. I died 3 times going through Davoi to get my Knight's Soul. I did level back up to 30 though just because I only needed 1k xp.

I will be making my mad dash tomorrow. The first class I lvled up was THF so I will be using Flee and perfect dodge, hoping it helps.

                      One question:

Has anyone gotten the quest, then changed jobs to a lvl 1-5 and made the run to the well?

You won't make a suicide run with a level 5 character. A level 30 Warrior can barely make it there. 30 thief might be cool. Flee can probably put some good distance on the pugils, saving you some hits.

A suicide run will only work if you have enough hp to last the barrage of hits coming at you.. lvl 1-5 will get smacked like 3 times and probably die. Not only are there pugils, Orcish Farshooters (or Far-something, I forget) snipe you from bridges above. Not very friendly place.

Heh, nuvas, my 29 war has 400 exp to go but I can't be bothered, too busy with pld. ><;; I'll have to get to it again one of these days.
