  • "shadow absorbs the damage and disappears"

Ok, I'm still pretty new to being a Ninja, but there's one thing that I think would make my life easier but I can't figure out.

I saw a Maat battle a while back involving a Ninja named Gund. Some of you have probably seen it, if not I found it here (right click, save as).

I was wondering how you get the "shadow absorbs the damage and disappears" line, that can be seen in the video, to appear when ever an utsu takes a hit for you. It doesn't do it for me, so I've had to try to keep count of the hits I take and keep an eye on the utsu icon so far. I've messed around with chat filters and I can't figure it out.

In Chat Filters, "Attacks you evade."

Set your evaded attacks and damage taken to different colours. This is very helpful.

Well, I have my damage set to above heads, maybe that's why I can't seem to get the shadow absorbs line?

        correct.

when I level ninja (currently only 14, but enough to have utsusemi), i have a vastly different setup for filters and damage display than i do when i level paladin.

ninja has damage in-log and in-screen ("both" option in config > misc), but heavily filtered so i see very little except my own hits, monster *misses*, and the various buffs that get cast on me (but not party members). it makes it a heck of a lot easier to count shadows, and as NIN you won't be dealing out huge damage for a while. i'm half tempted to filter my own attacks as well but that means i will likely lose the add:effect notices once i start using the status katanas.

paladin has damage in-screen only, but very little is filtered since there isn't nearly as much battle spam in the log. i always have effects shown for all party members so i can see if/when a mage gets slept i can throw out a cure to them asap. i also need to try and judge how much damage everyone is doing so i know how far below the hate threshold they are (from my own experience, i think i set a rather high threshold since i don't party with THF very often, so it's more important to keep the hate firmly fixed on me. i'm certain that if i had spent the majority of 40-60 with THF in the party i would have a much different hate cycle)
